That was my point. If I buy a 4K copy of a movie and it’s not 4K when I go to watch it, than there is an issue. If my hardware is defective and they replace it with an older model than we have an issue. I see no difference between the two.
Yep. Apple's protestations that this sort of thing is not their responsibility totally ignore the fact that THEY are the ones you paid for the movie, not Warner Brothers or 20th Century-Fox or Universal or anyone else. If they want to play that game, then the answer is to bypass the middleman and buy your movies from the movie studios, NOT from Apple, and only make use of "free" digital copies that come included with physical media (i.e., discs).

I am thinking this is a glitch, but if this is somehow Warner Brothers new policy, I expect a refund at least!

If this is their new policy and no refunds are given, here comes a big class-action lawsuit, that I will gladly participate in and I am not a big fan of lawsuits normally.

As I mentioned on the 9to5 Mac story, this is likely a bug or issue related to the tvOS update and maybe the new Samsung app. It’s too coincidental for it to have happened on the weekend of a major release.

People are so quick to assume that Apple has some kind of malicious intent with these things. Problems occur and as an IT professional I see it first hand.

They will surely all return. Not a single 4K movie that was downgraded has ever not come back eventually.

Maybe, but the story included an Apple employee saying it was intentional.

I do not think anyone is blaming Apple here, and if they are they are blaming the wrong company. Warner Brothers is the company to be blaming as of right now. I do agree with you (as I said in an earlier post) that this is most likely a glitch and will be fixed relatively soon.

If this is intentional and Warner Bros intends to leave customers with a downgraded version of what was advertised and purchased, this is a lawsuit.

Whoa there hold your horses, we don’t know any of the details yet. Maybe These titles are being upgraded to 4K HDR, or maybe something else. So soon to pull the trigger :p:rolleyes:

LOL. Those Apple help desk employees don't know jack. They usually have a generic answer which is that the "studio" can make changes to resolution at any time. I think it's a stock answer for these downgrade issues.

I would never take what these people say as the real problem. But that's also what makes it infuriating is that it's next to impossible to get to talk to someone at Apple who actually DOES know what they're talking about.

This is usually temporary to this date. Perhaps a re-encode or HDR upgrade or something. It'll be news if it's still like that in a few months.

Normally I'd point out that if there is an upgrade there's no reason why they couldn't keep the old 4K files online then instantly change over to the new files one day.

However, this is Apple we're talking about, who can't even update items in a store without taking it down for a few hours.

I really don't like that digital streaming purchases can be removed all together as well.

As a person who still buys discs, I have the same anxiety.

However, the reality has proven to be quite the opposite. I have known many, many people including myself who have lost physical media due to theft or destruction (kids, hot car, pets, careless handling, bit rot), including two co-workers who lost their entire collections in house fires. On top of that, there's also the other type of loss (as in inability to find where the disc is).

In contrast I don't know a single person who has ever lost a single streaming title. So far every service I'm aware of that has shut down (Target Ticket and Ultraviolet for example) have ensured continuity of access by transferring to a superior service.

Furthermore, I've had a dozen or more iTunes purchases upgraded to 4K UHD for free. Where are the free 4K UHD Bluray upgrades for my 1080p Blurays?

Similarly, Apple music is problematic too. I subscribe to Apple music and went to listen to a song I had added to my playlist months ago and received a message stating "this song is no longer available in your region". At least when I rip a CD or download off the 'bay I have that track for life.

This is a little bit of a rabbit trail, but why is an X-Men movie (which should be Fox) listed with Warner Bros movies?

Either way, interestingly, in my own library on my phone, X-Men: DoFP does indeed show up in HD (pretty sure it was 4k before), but the Rogue Cut still shows up in 4k, lol.

What I really want to know is why do many of my movies say neither 4k nor HD, even though they are definitely one or the other (only one or two of them are actually SD)?! It's been like that for months if not years, and I was really hoping this new TV app would fix the inconsistencies...

LOL all the people who are all "I don't buy physical media anymore!"

Well, this is what you get -- the thing you "bought" blowing around with the wind of a thousand lawyers and executives.

And even in the best case scenario, you can't sell, loan or give away any of this stuff, which is very much why Sony and Microsoft are so excited about "disc-less" game consoles.

What a weird thing to get angry about. People can spend their money as they please.

"Hmm, yeah, okay, that's interesting, kinda sucky, still doesn't affect me since I don't even have a DAYS OF FUTURE PAST THOSE EVIL SAVAGES!"

My priorities are, admittedly, a little bizarre.
