seems like the Australians are getting the royal shaft. Just like with digital cameras. And yet GST is only 10%? WTF (?!?)

what is the reasoning. Aussie importation duties? Higher local mark-ups? b/c NZ pricing on the new MPs are cheaper than AUS. And its even further to ship from China/Taiwan to NZ!!

pathetic isnt it.. i just heard on the news on the way home that australia also has the highest interest rates on home loans in the world.....great

The prices are the same as what you pay in the US.

Interest rates are very low at 3.25%.

We are still not in a recession.

No use complaining. If they were considerably more here than the US I'd be annoyed bit the prices are essentially the same. Sure we didn't get a big pay rise to cover the extra cost but anyone thinking prices weren't going to rise considerably is kidding themselves.

No use making a crappy cheap Mac Pro. These things are the flagship Mac.

Just a question - is the NZ mac pro really cheaper than Aussie? Don't the NZ machines come from Apple Aus?

Don't forget that prices from the store are less tax in US, but includes GST in NZ and I assume Aus.

I have been in the US for the past few months (originally from NZ), and I can tell you bringing over NZ dollars was no fun. Stuff here feels cheaper though.

I can see NZ and Aus got the shaft on the latest models, as they are readjusting prices for the current exchange. A lot of stuff seemed to go UP 30-40%.

I just checked. For the 8-core 2 x 2.66GHz Quad core model, in the US its $3299.00 USD. With an exchange rate of 1.00 USD > 1.55 AUD, thats about $5624.79 AUD INCLUDING GST. So its still $274 Aussie bucks more expensive. Explain that.

The prices went up 30 to 40% because the dollar dropped 30 to 40% in between products revisions. Apple don't tend to change product prices mid-release and as such the price rise occurred in one hit.

There's also the higher cost involved in servicing small markets like ours. Aus and NZ don't have the buying power of the US. There are many factors to consider.

Take off the sales tax for the AU prices and do the conversion. You'll find the prices pretty much in line with the US - their prices are pre sales tax which can be as high as 15% in some places.

see this post \/ \/ ???

I just checked. For the 8-core 2 x 2.66GHz Quad core model, in the US its $3299.00 USD. With an exchange rate of 1.00 USD > 1.55 AUD, thats about $5113.45 AUD. And I haven't applied any GST as the US price is without state tax. So its still $785 Aussie bucks more expensive. Explain that.

seems pretty darn different to me...

yes interest rates may be low, but not as low as other places, ~0.5%->~3%.

no we arent in recession, which is a great thing. some business are floundering :) excellent to hear. they are the main reason why we arent going 'down'.

the prices are not the same, hell even NZ has cheaper products.. our prices should equal the US prices (or whever the benchmark is taken from), after converting of course..

not to get all hackintosh on your butt, but if i made an awsome top spec i7 hackintosh it would flog the performance-price ratio of the MP.. might look a little worse (i guess i could purchase an old MP case or something though) but it would do its job.

For the 8-core 2 x 2.66GHz Quad core model: its roughly $200 AUD cheaper to get from NZ. But then you have top ship it back. But if you have friends/family or go on holiday then it may be worth it. Claim GST on way out (12.5% NZ GST) and pay (10% GST AUD) on way in

mum wants to go to NZ sometime, might get her to grab me a MM :)

US price doesn't include sales tax. AU price pre GST is A$5363.

So A$40 more. Big freaking deal. As I explained above there are considerable costs in servicing small markets - many local factors such as higher wages, higher importing costs, higher domestic transportation costs etc.

If you think products are priced just by multiplying the US price by the exchange rate you know as much about business as pepper shaker I'm staring at.

LOL. Shouldn't you be staring at your screen?

P.S. Love your "Location" - The Gong, Australia :)

US $3299.00 x 1.55 = $5113.45 AUD vs $5362.72 AUD (pre GST MP Price) = $249.27 AUD difference. Maybe your pepper shaker had a A$40 price tag still on it :D

Yes we are closer. Doesn't mean it's cheaper.

There are many issues to consider when shipping products to another country. One is physical shipping. Another is import costs (tarriffs, duties, local employee costs). Apple don't ship these things themselves and they certainly don't employee thousands of staff around the world to carry them from Shanghai to the stores under their arms.

Where are you guys getting your ideas of business from? They're ridiculous.

Australia has a tiny proportion of the population that will buy Mac Pros, itmay be the same percentage in the US but there are many, many more people there. Apple will do anything to minimise the cost to their largest markets to ensure that the sheer volume of sales will provide the greatest revenue. If you were shipping one product to a country where you sold a million products and the same product to a country where you sell a hundred and the effort to ship is roughly the same you couldn't afford to charge the exact same amount. Especially if the smaller country has higher wages, less relaxed import charges etc.

Bah!

hahahaha ok settle down dont get so worked up..

people ask questions, thats how they learn.

thanks for explaining. im an IT man, not a business man. you can expect us all to know it. (even if it is the basics)

Yeah I bollocksed that bit up - misread it a bit. Point still stands though.

Aw nu, aw nu, my Mec mene mey hive to come from teh NZ. All because et's got a new chep.

Beached es bru.

:)

After the previous Macbook updates I could see this coming though. It's a shame, entry iMac up $400 and the entry level Mac mini now is at the old high end Mac mini price point.

(Despite this I'm very pleased what Apple has done with the Mac mini :D)

EDIT: Wait a minute, it costs more in NZ does it not.

EDIT 2: vv incomplete without the beached whale.

Yeah I realise this.

I also find the state that I am in has a sales tax of 0% :D:D

Yeah I bollocksed that bit up - misread it a bit. Point still stands though.

Weak.

By your premise the MP in NZ should cost even more, as:

1. Its a MUCH smaller customer base than AUS
2. The GST is higher by 2.5%
3. Its further to ship (than AUS)

err..

But, its NOT. Its CHEAPER as per my post above.

[ And yes, I have factored in shipping, import/export duty. And the figures still don't stack up. UNLESS there is a disproportionate local AUS mark up on Apple high-end gear ]

Yeah I realise this.

I also find the state that I am in has a sales tax of 0% :D:D

Or you ship to a friend out of state. You drive, what 2 km over, have a coffee, drop off a 6 pack and drive back across state. Unbox and plug it in. And SMILE :D:D

are you forgetting exchange rates???

MP in america: $3,299US
MP in australia: $3,721US.

i wonder why on earth there is a $500 difference?? are we THAT far away!?!?!?!? rediculous. i could probably get a MP from america shipped over to here for cheaper then that.

its also similar with iMacs and MacMinis.

MP in France: $3,778US.
I guess Jobs dislikes the French more than he dislikes Aussies ^^

This is why I bought an NZ Mac Pro last week. It was pretty clear that our exchange rate wasn't going to help.

The reason for the premium is because Apple has been bleeding profit down under. The Mac Pro was selling for far less here than in the US for about 6 months.

Lots of stores are selling their old stock so be quick.
