Perhaps Apple is being conservative, the dollar could fall even lower, and as someone mentioned they don't usually change prices mid product cycle.

In this unstable economy there are fluctuations so it's best to be on the safe side.

Surely the clever thing is to buy a Refurb?

There's a 3.2Ghz Octo on the Uk Store for £2,475, with 8800GT (Only 2gb Ram)

not true, I bought one of those - the 2.8 one, perfect condition, came even with iLife 09. So if it's true, what they say on there webpage (refurb models sell with the software that came originally with this machine), then this refurb could not have been very old.

they are all gone. in 24 hrs. they had at least 3 when i place my order y'day :D

Hey leechlife, I got my refurbished 2x2.8ghz Mac Pro "Early 2008" Model today. Using it right now in fact. Apple also gave me an iLife '09 disc. :D Pleasant surprise. :) They've loaded iLife '08 on it so that's weird...just whack in the new iLife 09 and install I guess.

I bought mine for $3399 AU. It was listed with the minimum basic configuration. Like: 2x2.8ghz, 2GB RAM, 320GB HDD and ATI HD 256MB.

I unboxed it straight away and opened the case up to have a peek inside and install my outsourced 16GB RAM and I looked at the GPU and went eh? That's not an ATI card  ...turns out I have a Nvidia 8800 GT 512mb  OMGSH! So lucky what a nice surprise! I'm going to upgrade to the ATI 4870 512mb later this month, which is a shame but still!!! WOW. Nice to get a freebie from Apple. :D

MP in France: $3,778US.
I guess Jobs dislikes the French more than he dislikes Aussies ^^

$3855US in Sweden incl. VAT.

God I hate having the world's highest VAT/GST/whatever you want to call it :(

Of course, purchase power differs from country to country, so the One True Way is using burgernomics, where it should work out more or less the same.
I believe there's currently a difference of three or so Big Macs per year compared to buying the MP in the US.

The reason it feels like a rip off is the actual currency difference.
If I were to buy one in the US and fly home with it, there's a 131 burger difference.

If I include the NYC sales tax, there's still a 71 burger difference.

It is, in other words, cheaper for me to fly to the US and buy one there.
Hell, it's cheaper for me to fly to the US, buy the MP and stay at the Marriott Marquis on Times Square for a night.

This should be enough to realize why us old worlders are mighty pissed off.
