Does anyone think they'll update the MacBook at the same time as the Pro models? (Assuming they keep the MacBook at all that is!) I've been holding off buying since the beginning of the year, but I'll need one for work before the end of March. I'm not concerned about processor speed as such, but a higher res screen to match the 13in MBA would suit me fine.

what i dont get is this...most of the people on here are like, Ohhh I want the new MBP to have no ODD, SSD memory, be smaller and cheaper...well dumb f#$K buy a friggin MacBook AIR 13...and if you look at the current pricing on the Air, the 13 with 4gb and 256SSD retails for about $1500, what makes you think the new Macbook Pro 13 is going to be $1199 with an SSD, 8gb ram, 1600 pix display, etc, etc. etc...it's really simple math...

Also, I think the ODD should stay around for the Pro, as in reality there are still people that require them. I do web/graphic design, and I can't tell you how many of my clients send me CD/DVDs with their data on them, should i just ask them to upload it to dropbox or put it on a thumb drive, ya right....dont get me wrong, I would love for them to do that, but it's just not happening right now...and, believe it or not, there are times, that I need to BURN a cd/dvd for someone, and it's really nice to have that option, and I know I know, I could get an ugly ass external drive, but that sort of defies the purpose of portability...So when it comes down to it, if you don't want a Macbook Pro without the ODD, BUY A MACBOOK AIR, you most likely just browse facebook and macrumors and don't need the MBP. oh but i forgot, you NEED sandy bridge for your 3d rendering or final cut encoding cuz you probably are working for steven spielberg..

If they remove the optical drive that can give a lot of space for ssd memory. Than all software can just go on flash disc drives.

Or Apple could just leave in the ODD for now and use the LG-Hitachi ODD/SSD (which is being released in May) in the next revision. This would allow for the addition of an SSD from 8GB to 256GB while retaining the ODD. Then everyone is happy.:D

My laptop preference is not to bring a bag full of accessories when I travel. I want my Pro to have an Optical. I don't want extra cables, an optical drive or anything else with me, stuffed into a side pocket. And my laptop case is minimalist, so it is airport screening friendly. Otherwise you have to take it out of it's case.

Wrong on all counts. I create motion graphics, convert client movies to the right format and serve HD movies to large projection and LED screens in convention centers. A MacBook Air won't nearly cut it for me and I would rather have more storage, space for eSata ports and a better/additional graphics card for rendering than an ODD I rarely use. I've spent late night hours in my hotel room waiting for a movie to render because my client made a change and I don't have a decent graphics card and flash memory for rendering. I've stayed up until 3 am transferring a day's show records to an archive drive because my MacBook Pro doesn't have eSata. This is true "pro" level work that needs a pro level computer. I don't game. I don't read word docs. I don't watch movies. I squeeze every ounce out of this computer for WORK and I need more. I get the majority of client files via flash drive or ftp. And I'm talking GIGS worth of files in many cases. I used to do web design so I know damn well you could easily set up a way to get/share files via the web and teach people how to use it. Anybody can also use YouSendIt to send files back and forth. Not hard.

You see are the right demographic. I kinda regret getting my core i5 because I feel I don't use it that much like you do. Only real reason I got it was because of the screen size and that it was the lowest ppi possible on a macbook

well, you are a small percentage of the general audience on here. and i understand your needs, Im just trying to say, most people on here could get away with an AIR, but they are feverishly waiting for the new Pros, and they are wanting all the bells and whistles for less than what the airs are currently selling for...unfortunately I don't have time to "teach" my clients how to upload files back and forth, we do use yousendit for small stuff, but for anything over a gig, forget it, most peoples upload pipe is still pretty slow, and it's much easier for them to burn a cd/dvd and send it via snail mail or fedex, and trust me, I hate it...ive setup drop box accounts and box.net accounts just for them to upload to, and they won't do it...would a MacPro work better for you? or do you need the portability of a notebook?

Aw, I just bought a refurb 13" MacBook Pro, too. I chose to disregard speculation because... well, who knows when they'll really upgrade them, I suppose?

But then this comes along

i forgot, couldn't you get a current 17" mbp w/ expresscard slot for an eSata drive?

Whether or people like it or not the odd is going to go. It may not happen this cycle, but it will happen. ... I'm just saying all signs are pointing toward it going away eventually.

That's not the point, really. Of course it will go sometime. At some point firewire will be dropped. At some point so will USB. Someday physical keyboards may go away. Trackpads too. Progress marches on.

The issue people have, I think, is merely one of timing. It's too easy to rely on the cloud and on networked computers for all of the things that optical data storage can currently do, at least for most of Apple's world wide customers (not every country has great internet access or fully stocked e-video stores, etc. Many businesses and gov't entities still rely on CD's/DVD's for the transfer of data. Many employees rely on access to ODDs while traveling, meeting with clients, etc.) In another year or two this may not be the case.

If Apple really wants to put its money where its mouth is and declare the end of physical drives, they ought to at least build in 3G connectivity into their machines, btw.

I think most people you speak of who need an internal should be on a MacBook, and probably would, if it didn't look like a plastic toy. Many people are overbuying for their needs.

You say I'm a small percentage but think back. Aren't video editors, 3D/motiongraphics, creative professionals and high-def photographers who the Pro line were targeted to in the first place? Apple needs to concentrate on their needs, not try to be everything to everybody on a line that's supposed to be differentiated.

I do have a MacPro and try to do all my heavy processing before I go on show site but until they build a convention center in my backyard in Minnesota, I'm going to be hauling my 20 lb computer bag all over the US and Canada. When the new MBPros come out, I'll be buying two to go with the one I have already have so I can add computer rental to my day rate. Can you imagine how enjoyable that will be, taking 3 computers plus accessories through security, heaving it over my head on the plane, dragging it through miles of city and convention center halls (where there aren't always ramps). That's why I don't sympathize with people whining about having to carry one small accessory around. I'm a 46 year old woman with all that equipment and a man can't be bothered to carry 0.7 lbs around (or take the time to put the files on the computer before they leave the house/office)...

Before anyone suggests it, there's no way in hell I'm going to check or ship that many $$$$$$ of computer equipment!

After that show I did get one since it seems I'll be adding KiPro show records management to my skill set. And I won't be whining about having to carry another accessory. Haven't tried it yet so I don't know if it's as fast as a real installed card.

Who needs a Gym when your carrying 20lbs around all day?! eh? :p

I had a good chuckle reading that, Thanks Laurim :)

Let's hope Apple deliver with eSata - it's long overdue!

It ain't doing my knees any favors but my arms are pretty strong! I used to try to carry all that with a shoulder strap bag. I bless the day I bought a wheelie bag...until I get to a flight of stairs.

if the new 13" pro has a better screen and faster processor... and maybe slightly lighter i'm in! if it has an ODD i'll just remove it and put something else there

For what its worth, a good mate of mines works for a UK based Apple reseller and they're completely dry with stock on 15 and 17" MBP's - which of course isn't normal. They have a few 13" and he's told me that the manager believes tomorrow will be the day when they hear about either 1) new machines 2) more stock of the current gen. His manager personally thinks a newer generation will be announced tomorrow but won't receive shipment until early March.

Take from that what you will - will hopefully update this thread once I hear from him :D

I find my BS threshold is much lower as the gray hairs appear. So my solution is to carry only the computer (17 MBP) and power supply, and now my iPad. Send everything else (duplicates only, if critical docs or data) Fedex priority to the hotel or meeting site. I get that it wouldn't work for everybody, but so far no problems over four years and my shoulders thank me. Well worth the $30 or whatever.

Looking at Wikipedia and observing the tech specs and then looking at the responses here, I would like to ask... Did the MacBook Pro ever have specifications that were sufficient on a "Pro" level for its time in anyone's opinion?

Depends what you consider as "Pro" level hardware. MBPs have never used the top-of-the-line GPUs, they have always been mid-level like 8600M GT, 9600M GT, 330M GT etc. The CPUs have been a bit better as Apple has used the best 35W CPUs but so far they have not used 45W models, i.e. quads.

The answer is yes. But I go by performance, not specs. How fast does a page redraw feel? How quick is the Photoshop render? Is is faster than what you're using? Does one second really matter? That's why the Apple Store is so great--go test drive, costs you nothing.

hmmmm - if new mbp 13" is a good update - i may pull the trigger
i think a lower price would be a miracle

About Kenneth Lund

As a dane I must admit that Kenneth Lund is not a thrustfull person. In 2005 he was sentenced 60 days jail for producing false emails in another case.

So I would not believe a word of this rumour!

That's an interesting fact. Do you have some proof to corroborate this? It's one thing to say you should not believe someone, but it's another to claim he did fraudulent actions in the past.
