Thanks for the fast responses. Whatever was said was not going to affect my decision to buy one (since my issue has only been finances), however when I see people with opinions such as "It better have the latest greatest at 2 GB or bust" it makes me wonder what standard they're holding it to.

Ah good. Another long thread where self-absorbed fanboy children who have never once sat down with and actual client next to them to use one of apples "pro" applications and make their living, post and whine that apple should remove functionality and turn the MacPro into a useless Air so they can look cool while they check their failbook page.

Fact about Kennet Lund

That's an interesting fact. Do you have some proof to corroborate this? It's one thing to say you should not believe someone, but it's another to claim he did fraudulent actions in the past.

I forgot the quote.. Anyway here an article from leading danish newspaper Berlingske Tidendes business section about a case from one of Kenneth Lunds other activities, wedding. Around halfway in the article is written about the 60 days jail, he was sentenced . You can translate with Google:

It's very clear. I believe the article is genuine. But I'm not sure we're talking about the samen Kenneth Lund. I did a little search on LinkedIn and found a couple of Kenneth Lund's in the Denmark area. It seems like the name is as common as James Baker is in the USA. Perhaps I'm wrong, but a name itself doesn't say very much.

It´s the same person.. He is well known as a doubtfull person in danish mac fora. If you have patience you can translate this thread from danish mac site Macnyt:

I did. It seems like you're not the only one who thinks he should not be trusted. After all, resellers probably don't know anything until the new notebooks arrive on their doorstep. The reports about shortages and dwindling stock, however, suggest the refresh will happen rather sooner than later.

Trust me, you don't want that.

You want a computer that can run either Snow Leopard or Lion. You don't want to be using a computer that came with 10.7.0 which freezes every few hours, waiting a month for an update to 10.7.1. Which only freezes once a day.

Keeping the option of using Snow Leopard IMO is well worth 99-129 bucks.

I've installed and ran new versions of Mac OS X on release day since Panther and have had no hiccups whatsoever. Panther and Snow Leopard, in particular were fairly smooth upgrades. Tiger would've been smoother were it not for the fact that my optical drive was dead and I was installing it on a G3, and Leopard was smooth, it was just bloated, but that's Leopard for ya. I've never seen nor experienced any bugs with the 10.x.0 release, at least not before the 10.x.1 update is released (which is usually sooner than a month, btw ;) )

It's always the same procedure here...

A rumor about a certain feature, eg no ODD.
"Oh thanks Apple nobody needs this old stuff."
One political correct guy comes in and says: "just because you don't need it does not mean everybody thinks this way!"

Of course people know that there are some other people using a feature once in a blue moon. But still you should acknowledge that the majority of people in this forum don't really use discs that often, KNOWING that there are some exceptions and that this forum is not representative for the rest of the world.

You should similarly acknowledge that people in this forum with that opinion make up a small minority of Mac users at large, especially when it comes to products like the 13" MacBook Pro for which there is a large customer base for.

oh god , i mean jobs please kill ODD for good and let the disbelievers in this forum to shut up for good :(

Talk to most people in an Apple Store, you'll be surprised to find out that you've been the disbeliever all along.

Or Apple could just leave in the ODD for now and use the LG-Hitachi ODD/SSD (which is being released in May) in the next revision. This would allow for the addition of an SSD from 8GB to 256GB while retaining the ODD. Then everyone is happy.:D

 That exists?! Sign me up!

Aw, I just bought a refurb 13" MacBook Pro, too. I chose to disregard speculation because... well, who knows when they'll really upgrade them, I suppose?

But then this comes along

There is a chance that the 15" and 17" models will be the only ones updated this round. Also, the refurb 13" MacBook Pro at $999 is too good of a deal to pass up if you're in the market for one, imminent refresh or not. It's not like the refreshes immediately affect the cost of refurbished models anyway.

Also, I think the ODD should stay around for the Pro, as in reality there are still people that require them. I do web/graphic design, and I can't tell you how many of my clients send me CD/DVDs with their data on them, should i just ask them to upload it to dropbox or put it on a thumb drive, ya right....dont get me wrong, I would love for them to do that, but it's just not happening right now...and, believe it or not, there are times, that I need to BURN a cd/dvd for someone, and it's really nice to have that option, and I know I know, I could get an ugly ass external drive, but that sort of defies the purpose of portability...So when it comes down to it, if you don't want a Macbook Pro without the ODD, BUY A MACBOOK AIR, you most likely just browse facebook and macrumors and don't need the MBP. oh but i forgot, you NEED sandy bridge for your 3d rendering or final cut encoding cuz you probably are working for steven spielberg..

After all the talks of MobileMe being used as a cloud base system I can see where this would fit in in Apple phasing out the ODD. If a client needs to send you something they can just upload it to your cloud. Old timers just need to adapt to this. If I client can drag a file into a CD, Im sure they can drag into your cloud.

I still dont get why people need to burn a CD or DVD for sharing data. You said you'd love it if clients would upload their stuff on Dropbox, so why don't you when you need to share something on a CD? How hard is it to email a Dropbox link?

It's a good thing that most DVD players will play things from the cloud because that demo portfolio that I'll have made in Final Cut Studio will need to be playable there somehow!

Whine to Apple when it happens. May not happen now, but I'm sure it's on their roadmap.

You can AirPlay the video to your clients Appletv 2, right? :)

I wouldn't trust him a penny! The business described in the article has just continued. Now Kenneth Lund is blogging and making low-cost television shows for a very small Danish tv station. He claims to have 50.000 viewers - but without any statistics to back it up. Meanwhile he is advertising people to support his work with cool cash - for his salary! And he still calls it voluntary work out of his interest.

Kenneth Lund will do everything to get famous. His middle name is WedMore because he's World Record holder for being married most times (I believe it's seven times with his wife). Any critics on his blogs are being cut off - only those who are willing to support his work are welcome!

Both Bryllup.dk and KennethLund.dk is registered by the same firm - owned by Kenneth Lunds recently deceased mom. May she rest in peace.

If they took out the optical drive and kept the same unibody they might be able to fit in a larger battery and therefore more work time. But a larger battery might add more weight.

Classy guy this Kenneth eh ;)

What a nasty comment.

If you want to measure swords, I can assure you that as an Apple Fanboy I work with some of the largest for profit Apple installs in the US - names you have heard of. I have worked with Apple Prof. Serv, enterprise sales/telesales, etc. for over 11 years.

Supporting literally thousands of Macs I can tell you that in the business environment, which you smugly allude to, people use there optical drive VERY little.

Apple in the business business world is growing in leaps and bounds. The creative pro market, which I suppose you support, was core and is turning into niche market...

You sound like a gem of a consultant from your tone, BTW...

Classy guy this Kenneth eh ;)

Would like to know who contacted who in this story. Did Danish blogger Kenneth Lund contact MacRumors with his story (just to get traffic on his site of course) or did MacRumors found the story themselves? I wonder..

The ODD has been there for all these years. It's easier to assume that it stays there than make a baseless guess that it's going to get dumped now. It will happen someday but it does not mean that it must happen in the next update.

Besides, pretty much all sold computers still have an ODD.

Also, as other have pointed out, there have been no leaks of a new case design. I imagine that if Apple were to remove the ODD, then a case redesign would be warranted. I agree with you, Apple may remove the ODD someday, but I highly doubt it will happen with this refresh.

No, I didn't. First, I didn't write that the optical is not useful. I wrote that it is rarely useful. Second, I didn't cite anything as "proof."

The MacBook Air is now the hottest selling Mac laptop ever. Is that proof that most users rarely find an optical drive useful? No, not proof, but it's very strong evidence.

Before you can deduce proof, you need to find out how many are purchasing the Air as a second computer and how many purchase it as the primary l sole computer. The evidence will be as strong as the number of people purchasing the Air as a sole computer with no peripheral ODD. This is not a put down; actually, I would be interested to find out.

I think Lund himself informed MacRumors because we have never heard of him before. Also, because his blog is completely in Danish I would say chances are very slim arn or any of his colleagues discovered the story by accident.

Either way, it's still bait on the hook.

As I read through some peoples opinions here as far as what will be included in the the new MBP's, seems like the general consensus is that it won't be much. I have a feeling it is going to be quite substantial however. I think it will definitely have a new slimmer case, I think it will have at minimum, an i3 processor in the 13/14" model. I think SSD will be available for a reasonable price.

Two things I do not think will be done, but wish they were,

1. No ODD
2. Add Light peak

What about the iMac?!

On every Apple Fan site, ive seen the macbook pro rumors but the iMac refresh rumors are not mentioned on any site. I have been waiting for this refresh for a while now. Will the iMac be refreshed in march as well?

They will not let the 13" which is one of their best seller be left behind

We'll have to wait and see. Anyway it's no certainty that the MBP will be updated in March.

I reckon the MBP will probably be updated first with the other Macs to follow later.

A swedish Mac Store called Macoteket is listing their MacBook Pro 13", 15" and the 17" as unknown and "In stock March 1 2011, March 4 and March 15 2011."

They have no computers available what so ever on their website. Maybe that can mean something.
