Curious he says iMessage is winning out.
Android has bigger base.
What is the most popular messaging app on android?
Could be the whole point of Z’s comment was to bring attention to Apples “bundling” of iMessage”.
No opinion on his comment, just an observation.

Perhaps because android is fragmented especially in China, where as almost everyone using an iPhone defaults back to iMessage.

What’s app isn’t really big in China or parts of Asia.

Why not just use regular text?
I was wondering this. I pretty much use the Messages app for everything. If the recipient has iMessage it sends as such, if not it goes through as a SMS text message. Doesn’t matter if they are on Android or BlackBerry or Windows. Only issue is for photos and videos. Pics cost extra on my phone plan if it’s not iMessage. I use WhatsApl for those.

And we're supposed to believe everything Mark says about security after what's happened with Facebook over the last year?

I rarely message friends on Facebook or any of these other apps. Text Messages or iMessages or nothing.

"WhatsApp is completely end-to-end encrypted, does not store your messages, and doesn't store the keys to your messages in China or anywhere else. And this is important because if our systems can't see your messages, then that means that governments and bad actors won't be able to access them through us either."

You're kidding yourself if you think Facebook paid $19 billion for WhatsApp to not exploit it for data to help in adverting. It'd not anywhere near as "private" as they want you to believe.

Maybe you guys got it all wrong. He's already a billionaire. He doesn't give a damn that much about money anymore. He brought that out for the board to reconsider their stance on Facebook Messenger. He's suggesting that they shouldn't mine/analyze our private messages. Though I'm just kinda hoping that's what he really thought on their messaging service.

I'd rather just use iMessage for all my messages but around half of my friends have Android phones so I still need WhatsApp and Messenger.
Oh. Those people get SMS from me. If anybody messages me through Facebook, I only respond to redirect them to text or email.

"It's worth noting that one of the main reasons people prefer our services, especially WhatsApp, is because of its stronger record on privacy," Zuckerberg said.

How f'n delusional is this guy? What a completely asinine thing to say.

But I guess this kind of hubris should be expected from the leader of a company that has such a piss poor record on privacy and data security yet still had the balls to release a speaker/camera for in home use and expect it to have mass success.

Don't you just use iMessage to send them texts?
I've already addressed that, I don't want to pay extra just to be awkward.
I would have to pay extra to send MMS messages because they are not included with most mobile bundles.

Lol. Mms’s arent included in your data/talk packs?

I havent paid for an mms since like 2008/9

I don't think they are popular in the UK anymore because everyone uses WhatsApp, iMessage or Messenger. They used to be included but we now get tons of low cost data here.

Just shows how much the CEO of Facebook has lost touch with the core of his own product. Facebook used to be a static site for sharing personal information with friends. Now it’s a messaging service where your friends can spam you with memes, where the site cherry picks what you see and prefers things like memes and pictures over text, and companies get 40% of the page for ads.

Facebook had power because it was ubiquitous. It had so much potential that has been squandered over the years. Zuckerberg and the rest of the executive team has driven Facebook into the ground, not to mention the sleazy stance on data collection and privacy.

iMessage is simple. It works. Even when it's been "bloated" with Stickers and Apps, it's still not too bad.

iMessage has two big flaws:

* It allows for saving messages "Forever" and syncing them to all my devices, yet it's hard as hell to actually scroll up to read messages. I'm guessing it keeps things compressed in a database, but it's just so annoying to try to keep scrolling up.

* Reviewing and deleting attachments is a paint. Trying to view photos in a message sometimes just shows a bunch of empty squares, and many times it keeps jumping to the top of the screen when I'm selecting stuff to delete.

Neither of those really impact basic, day-to-day chat, though.

For Facebook Messenger, I get this:

* It requires I keep Notifications for it enabled. If I disable them (on a secondary device that I don't want to be disturbed on, such as an iPad), it nags you in the app to enable notifications.
Even if you try to disable Notifications in the app, it's only for X minutes/hours. There is no way to turn off notifications completely.

* ADS. As soon as I open the app, one of the first things I noticed is the "Sponsored" message.

* it might not actually send a message to anyone. Facebook use to just have integrated text messaging. After they moved it to Messenger, people that use the mobile Facebook app no longer see messages unless they also use Messenger.
I've sent messages to people, and they've yet to even see them.
That's why the app notifies you that "Soandso is now on Messenger!", because they finally installed the app, despite already using Facebook.

Those three things DO impact how I use the app. The ads are annoying, and nagging about Notifications is really annoying.

I must be much more accomodating than you, I find it's easier to just relax and go with the flow.

I actually see a lot of Facebook posts (ironically) from my friends complaining about people using Messenger. I'll go with the flow if there's some critical mass and people are hell-bent on some platform, but the default is Messages (iMessage/SMS as needed) or just email.

I can think of another flaw, it isn't cross platform compatible.
Messages is cross-platform: people on iOS devices get messages via iMessage and people on Android or any other phone platform get SMS. I can start a group thread in Messages and everything still works, it's still one conversation, and I'm guaranteed that everyone on any platform can be included.

And I say that Zuckerberg and the creeps like him are the biggest threat to democracy by far. Well, him and one other guy that I'm not allowed to mention. But you know who. You know exactly what I am saying.

For the rare occasion when I have to respond to a Facebook message on iOS, I have found that the Firefox mobile browser, oddly, allows you to read/respond within Facebook without just getting that infuriating message to "download Messenger".

Ok, so it works for basic text message conversations but it isn't using iMessage when Android users are part of the group. This means we would all get charged extra for sending pictures, audio and video so that makes it a none starter for my friends and I.

Wasn’t iMessage going to be open standard like FaceTime, that other Apple open standard no one other than Apple is interested in?

There aren’t enough swear words to accurately reflect my thoughts regarding that absolute nonsense statement, Zuck
