Very few people in Taiwan use WhatsApp or iMessage as most people don’t even know WhatsApp, and iMessage is very inconvenient for us to communicate with Android users. I also have mentioned many times in MacRumors that our government discourages using iMessage for the overwhelming scam issue, but nobody else in MacRumors treated it seriously.

In reality we can choose what IM apps we want to install but we can’t remove what we should install. I hate LINE— unstable, poorly designed, bloated, outdated, stingy..., but I can’t remove as families, friends, colleagues, classmates, etc. use it. Many people use Facebook Messenger too but it is just slightly better.

I know there are many Signal fans in MacRumors and they hate Telegram so much, but at least there are more people in Taiwan willing to try Telegram now, and its privacy is already better than most of major competitors. Most people in Taiwan don’t know Signal either.
I still don't see why people think Telegram is better. It's not even e2ee by default. That should be a red flag. You have to use secret chat manually. Meanwhile, on WhatsApp, e2ee is by default.

Most people I knew in Taiwan use either Line or WeChat. I hardly know anyone in Asia in general that use iMessage. It's too inconvenient considering the majority of users are on Android.

E2EE is the most overhyped feature for IM apps recently and proved that its security still depends on the operator. Do people really think WhatsApp is more secure than Telegram? You also have other E2EE alternatives instead of Signal. I have also been using Element (a Matrix client) too.

WeChat is only used when communicating with mainland Chinese people is required, but I use QQ. Those two by Tencent are actually the most secure IM apps for the Chinese government.

E2ee is not overhyped, it is what it is. What’s overhyped is Telegram, despite the default chats are not encrypted at all, and they are stored server side. That’s what baffles me. Signal is great, no argument against that, but the way people is hyping Telegram is weird, especially when it’s about security and encryption.

Signal fans never admitted that Signal is overhyped but ordinary people even never heard about it.
