Game Informer said that Mass Effect's last three hours were the 2nd best moment of 2007 in gaming. C'mon guys, make it that far, and then it becomes worth it :) my friends seem to think so too.

I completely respect that. If you don't like the game you don't like it. I don't like rts games and wouldn't play one even if it had a great ending.

^ There's actually loads of games that I have done exactly the same in. Given it half an hour or an hour and then been bored senseless.

GOW for example was a big snooze fest for me. I just didn't like it. I didn't bother trading it back in, but it's been sat on my shelf unplayed in over a year.

Edit...

So I'm about 13 hours in. I spent two hours yesterday evening, and didn't do any major missions. I just spoke to people on the normandy and played out the conversations. Called back to the citadel and did a few side quests whilst delivering news/messages... And yet I really enjoyed doing this slow paced stuff, but it didn't feel slow paced to me. Best game I've played THIS WEEK ;)

Just hope the KOTOR curse doesn't happen to me. (get 17 hours my game saves get corrupted)

Borrowed my friend's 360 and completed the game in 2 days flat, I must say this game is good, but it could have been more. I find the last few plot arc to be pretty good and dramatic, not to spoil anyone here. Personally, I wish they develop more materials for each character (I could have missed a lot while rushing through the game). The main story arc could have also been more elaborate, it kinda of feels like they were rushing for release.

If not for the fact that I don't have a 360, I would have bought the game immediately. All I can do now is hope that they will be releasing a version for PC. I'm certainly going to play it a second time if they ever release it on another platform.

EDIT:
I agree with the posters, the AI is stupid, I find myself screaming "Don't cross my line of fire!" at them all the time or "Why the hell are you just shooting at walls!"
The inventory is crap as well, I spend way too much time cycling through my inventory and trashing stuff, and they throw an absurd amount of gears at you.

I pick an infiltrator, specializing in sniper rifle (which is stupid but too late, guess I suffered from sniper-assassin complex)

Yeah, I'm playing through as an infiltrator right now and I'm like "Wrex you idiot stop walking in front of me!" It is like they designed the AI to know when you pull out your sniper rifle so they can step in front of you.

Anyway, the party members that give you side quests if you talk to them enough are Tali, Wrex, and Garus. They're all pretty well developed but it would be nice to learn more.

I like the fact that even if you stick with the same party (my case Wrex & Tali) for most of the game, they will still auto stat update your other party incase you change and are not left in the position of a useless team mate (AI not withstanding)

The auto level is an option. I have it off by default. You can also control what abilities they use by default. Unfortunately, you can't choose which ones are suicidal or not. I was fine with Wrex being somewhat suicidal (as he was in the past for me) but suddenly Liara is getting this weird idea that running into a bunch of bad guys is a great idea. Leaves me smacking my head when I want a singularity or something and she went off and killed herself.

Just got it today....and I have to say, wow!

Its great, its like KOTOR...but better(although there are no lightsabers :-( )

Still, its very very good(so far...only played about 1/2hr of it)

Yeah, it's an awesome game. And it gets better. :)

I'd agree the ending is good.
I really like the climax leading up to the showdown in Virmire. It actually make me go "Nooo, why are they making me decide". Ah crap, I had to return my 360, now I am aching to play it a second time.

My main gripe would be that they need to put in more content...

I finished this 2 nights ago. For me the game got better-and-better as I made it further into the story. I did very few side-quests this time around as I'll save those for other play throughs. I really enjoyed learning about the Reapers and Protheans as the game progressed. I wore my Sennheiser headphones almost the entire time I played this game and the sound was fantastic with them. I've played through KoToR and KoToR Sith Lords many times and this game is right up there with them, if not better. Definitely worth the $. I foresee many more hours playing this game as I try different characters and become a "not-so-nice-spectre". :D

Now either back to Bioshock or time to start Metroid Prime 3.

Yeah, thats the reason I avoided Kotor 2. lol I just saw it as shovelware and avoided it. Hopefully the download content starts popping up for Mass Effect soon (and hopefully it is more than the vanilla side quests, which while entertaining are somewhat repetitive).

Off Topic (do I ban myself?), but I got CoD4 and The Simpsons Game for Christmas from my wife. I played TSG a lot. Fun game, crappy camera angles sometimes, but I'm a sucker for some (funny) Simpsons, so I might be biased. Only played CoD4 a little (single player, no broadband where I live) and that game is amazing. Seriously amazing. ANd now to get it back on topic (I can unban myself now).. so ME has been put on the shelf. :)

So to bring this back from its coma.... Is Mass Effect worth picking up a 360 for?

I play KoToR on my powerbook a lot, and I just found out about Mass Effect last week. Stunning looking game. Now that its been a few weeks more, has extra content been released? Have you picked up the game again? How many times have you played it through?

(or to I go play Kotor until its released for PC and play it in boot camp?)

Just to offer a confusing counterpoint to my fellow Irishman above:

It might be worth buying, but I wouldn't buy a console just to play it. As I believe I said above - the main storyline is good, interesting, and worth playing; but the side missions are very basic, bland and repetitive.

When I heard the description of "Oblivion in space" - it sounded like just the game I was looking for. The ability to hop in a craft, take it wherever you wanted, land wherever you wanted and explore. It's not quite that..

Agreed.

I think they intended for the game to be like that, but considering the number of times that it's release was pushed back they had to scrap that idea in consideration of releasing the game at least in the same year that it was promised.

Funnily enough, it seems to be a recurring theme. Gaming companies come up with a great, ambitious, wide-open gaming project which then gets progressively scaled back until the shipped product is nothing like what was originally envisaged. You'd think they'd learn! ;)

I remember watching the original Halo preview and thinking it'd be great to play in a huge wide open world like that, but the reality was a lot more claustrophobic!
