i am surprised that they have not done this for the 13" MBP too.
Thinking that they were trying to unify the macbook line yet they are not keeping the same standard across the whole line.
Confusing

I agree, it is slightly confusing to leave the 13" out. However, this may be a way of keeping those who say "the 13" isn't a real pro" happy by leaving something to the 15"+.

Although, I would expect it to come to the 13" soon.

EDIT: Anyone who buys one of these, pics would be appreciated.

this is great news, one of the main factors in me going for the 17 was the AG option. Now this is available for the 15 I may have to rethink the choice

I think this would rock on the 13 though, which being more portable is the one that probably experiences the most glare

This kind of freaked me out a bit. I went to order my new macbook pro (15 inch 2.8gHz) and had it all set up, but I checked my account and the direct deposit hadn't go in so I wait an hour for it to process. It did, so I go back and reset up what I wanted. I noticed that I could choose antiglare for it! They literally must have JUST made this an option!

I just recieved me 13" MBP today, Apple has two weeks to introduce matte for the 13" :(

A week or two ago, I would have pulled the trigger immediately. I've been waiting for over a year patiently for this.

Only hesitation is the last couple weeks there have been rumors of Apple incorporating Blueray soon. I'm not a pro media (need the horsepower for processor intensive monte carlo simulations in excel run through bootcamp since Office '08 dropped VBA), so I don't need Blueray burner capability. But I am migrating my movie library to blueray and would like something that could play blueray when traveling.

Any thoughts on when the blueray would be upgraded? The matte was my biggest issue, but it would be nice to have blueray playback if the presumed wait is not too long.

Thats good news. Thanks Steve for listening :D Can't wait for the 13" Matte option to show up :p:D

Wow, I never saw this coming at least so soon.

that's good news for those who hate the glossy screen. Being that my MBP is so new (late 08 model) I'm not even thinking of "upgrading." Regardless, this is great for people who really wanted it.

Great they make this available AFTER i purchase my laptop. Oh well at least the option is there now. Bring on Nehalem.

I wonder what forced them to change their offering...maybe that article warning users against Apple laptops earlier in the year

Nice bump.

Now I can buy one!

Or wait? I don't really need a laptop until October; maybe there'll be another refresh? Last "refresh" wasn't really refresh, but rather stripping down ;-) Hmm... I think I'll wait and see. But in any case, I'm happy to see matte back!

This is Apple marketing at its finest. Apple floods the market with glossy only 15" displays on its MBPs for over a year... then, in a quarter of NEED, when the economy and sales are slumping everywhere, Apple offers an "optional" anti-glare display in the 15" MBP. Now, all of those who bought a unibody MBP, but would have preferred glossy, NOW GO BUY A NEW 15" MBP... and the market will be flooded with glossy models... and everyone will complain how they got a crooked lid or dinged edge or stuttering drive or etc etc etc.

Congrats to all of you who waited precisely for this.

The Mac "Professional" user won a big battle today. As with FireWire on MBs, the emails, complaints, and requests do work. Especially in times of economic downturn, companies like Apple have to do what customer want, not what's easiest for them to deliver.

Fantastic! Too bad I can't buy the 15" anymore because it doesn't have Expresscard...still, we're halfway there now (or halfway back to be precise.)

Where are all the matte "it will NEVER EVER COME BACK" people now? ;)

I remember a BUNCH of people stating that, including kastenbrust! He guaranteed both that and no MBP updates until 2010 (about three months ago) which happened less than two months after he stated that!

I love it when some people "guarantee" things like. I remember him stating to everyone to re-watch Shiller's keynote when he talked about Apple's "high-end" MBP users needing anti-glare, and also mentioned wouldn't get a speed bump update to the MBPs or any update until Arrandale.

Sorry to signal you out kastenbrust, but you have been so completely wrong, and as sure as you were, makes it funny to see these changes that were the exact opposite of what you guaranteed.

LMAO!

Took 'em long enough. I wouldn't dream of choosing a glossy display after owning enough CRTs in my life. If you like the glossy, more power to you. I was just annoyed that there was no choice after it was there for years. This is another reason I have no interest in the ACD. We have row upon row of fluorescent lights at work, so I can't imagine the pain of our Apple displays were glossy.

I'm hoping Apple offers some option on the iMac refresh coming soon. Just give us choice, Apple!

yeah, but

Isn't the main problem the glass screen rather than the lcd coating?

I'd like a matte lcd and no glass but I'm not sure they can do that since the glass is part of the screens rigidity.

epic fail of aesthetics before ergonomics.

Antiglare option now available on 15" MBP!

Apple reinstated the antiglare option for the 15" MBP!

An extra 40 beans.

About glossy and antiglare
Choose the glossy widescreen display to make your graphics, photos, and videos appear with richer colours and deeper blacks — great for watching DVD movies. If you prefer a display with antiglare coating for a matte rather than glossy viewing experience, choose the antiglare widescreen display.

Important note:
The actual size of the display is the same (15-inch diagonal) on both models. The antiglare display has a silver frame (border) around the display.
