Just took my launch day matte black 7 Plus out of the case for inspection and not one blemish. Even the camera and mute switch locations show zero wear. I'm a firm believer in total protection. Not those silly apple leather cases that do not completely cover up the bottom. You're just asking for trouble.

"Normal use" is a very subjective thing. The matte black "painted" phone is not typical liquid paint. It is dyed anodized aluminum. The metal is oxidized in a controlled process to "grow" an extremely hard but porous coating. Which is then exposed to the black dye which gets trapped in the pores of the coating. Unless something went VERY wrong with the anodizing process, as far as I know this paint CANNOT just flake off like that. Stuff like edge scuffs are very much possible in "every day use" if a phone is not used in a case and allowed to sit in a pocket with abrasives such as other metal objects like keys and coins. Of course most complaints will come from people who will INSIST it was treated like a new born baby but in reality there may have been a few absent minded incidents. The photo of the back of one that has dots in it look like the phone was stabbed or dropped and perhaps the metal chipped. The "flaking" people are suggesting would be far more likely with the Jet Black since that one seems to be painted on and polished like a car rather than an dyed anodizing. All this being said it sucks this is happening. But to say that Apple hasn't accounted for this is silly. Anodizing is a very well proven process. Still **** happens. Nobody can make a 100% indestructible phone. For every company that does, there will be a handful of absent minded users that will prove that wrong.
The picture with multiple chips on the back is actually pretty telling. When you drop a phone, it almost always drops on a corner. I just dont see it getting chipped like that from a fall. I might be wrong. Also, it is always possible the phone has been handled carelessly.

*sigh* The iPhone 5 had the same problems, and that was under Jobs' tenure. The original iPhone scuffed as well. Apple should have been aware of the possibility with such a large surface area and made sure the problem was minimized. It sounds to me like a manufacturing issue.

lol, Apple should have been aware that people treat their personal property like SH*T?!

You should see the condition people bring their iPhones in at the Apple Store. Scratched, bent, shattered, dropped in toilets, slammed in car doors, dropped down stairs...you name it. Worked there for 6 years and it never ceased to amaze me how utterly careless people are with their phones. Then it breaks and they blame Apple for it. People think an iPhone is just a $200 phone still for Christ's sake...

Meanwhile I look at my 2+ year old phone with hardly a scratch on it. Folks, be aware of the $800 touchscreen computer in your pocket! Don't put it with your keys. Don't set it down on the table next to a glass of water. Don't hold it in your hand with a bunch of other stuff as you get out of the car. Stop for a second and THINK

Yep, definitely possible. Chipping can affect any iPhone, really. I'm not seeing the same number of complaints from Jet Black iPhone owners, though, so it seems like the matte Black version is more vulnerable.
I believe the jet black used a process unique that color. They definitely have a very different feel in the hand.

Well, it's not paint. It's the anodized coating itself. And it should abrade away, not flake off. It's faulty anodizing.
Thank you. I get so tired of folks talking about paint on iPhones, watches, etc., when anodizing is an entirely different process (and, yes, what is shown is faulty anodization). Glad to see your comment voted up to the top where hopefully more will see it and learn.

Never had a problem with bluetooth on any previous iPhone until the 7+. Multiple threads describe the issue. Functionality>Aesthetics

Thats a cool story. I've never had a problem with bluetooth on any iPhone including my 7+. So now our anecdotal evidence cancels out. I could find you threads upon threads of people bitching about bluetooth on all models. Non-issue.

It's amazing how fragile cell phones have become from 10 years ago and the answer seems to always be "blame the user."
I tend to disagree on this one. I used to drop my iPhone 5, which I used to use without a case, many times. Apart from small dents, it never did any major damage. Worked perfect for almost 4 years.

I'm actually an anodizer. This is a textbook anodizing reject.

Great info thanks. That said I hope Apple does the right thing and provide replacements. As manufacturing defects the owners deserve it.

Wait, I couldn't get past the part of the story where the person said they couldn't get Apple to give them a free phone.
So, some paint wear and tear is now the standard for them to rip open a brand new box?
Man, what times we live in.

BTW, my week 1 Jet black IP7 Plus is still pristine.

It's as if it's anodised!

This is why I've gone for white every time so I get close to unannodised aluminium.

I'm really looking forward to steel phones again if the rumours are true. You can't beat iron or at least you have to, to make steel.

I really wished it wasn't glass back but ceramic but hell I'll have that over aluminium which is just that little bit too soft.

I'm no anodizer, but my anodized firearms have wear that is consistent with what you are saying, not flaking. Interesting.

*edit - my matte black 7+ still looks fantastic.

Thanks Harry, I've owned a lot of anodized things, never seen this, but I guess they were properly anodized.

Hardly something unique. I remember my iMacDVSE getting scratched, and the paint chipping off my TiBook.

Shiny things.... it happens.

It amazes me how people think it's Apple's fault, if people drop there phone it's their fault, you can't blame the company that made the phone. I always look after my devices, my iPhone 7 Plus Jet Black has not got a scratch on it (I use a case as well) respect your devices and they will work fine.

Dear Apple,

Please let me buy an iPad or iPhone with a black front, that doesn't have a stupid colored back that scratches off (you know, like the plain aluminum kind). Kthxbye.

Look after your iPad and it wouldn't scratch, I have an iPad Pro and the back of mine is fine. It's not Apple's fault if you scratch them.
