If I were to put my XS Max on the arm of my sofa it was going to walk off. But I always use a case so being slippery is not a issue.

Are people sure the extra grip is coming from the sides & not the back - don’t you touch the sides more than the back when using the phone?

Yeah it’ll be more slippery.

This is the reason why I think Apple went with glossy Airpods - a matt coating would see them lose grip from the ear & fall out easily

That makes no sense. The airpods being glossy means they do fall out of the ears easily. They do for me. No other earphones I have ever used have had glossy eartips. You get better friction from mat rough surfaces like rubber, sponge, painted surfaces.

Apple made airpods glossy white because that's their signature look for better or worse. I notice people wearing them in public all the time which is what Apple wanted. They look really dumb.

I love the matte finish. I think it looks very nice and gives the phone that premium look it is.

that being said I slapped a Speck case on mine so it’s a moot point. But if I was using it without case I might be more concerned about it. It’s almost a shame to cover it up but considering how much I have my phone on my desk at work I go with a case.

I dunno, Jimmy. The gloss whilst being a smoother surface is grippy to me. This applies to both the Airpods & their case. Not sure if it’s a reaction to body oils that makes their surface stickier, but they do grip nicely in my ears anyway.

I find matt finishes slippery myself, although the material used may make a difference. I do prefer matt as it’s a smudge-deterrent.

Fair enough. We’re all different. I have quite greasy skin so find different materials can be quite irritating like the glass back on some watches or currently on the iPhone 11. The glass makes my skin sweat which is making the glass greasy and irritating my hand.

My Pro didn't feel slippery until I put an Apple clear case on it. Still going to use it. The phone is too pretty to cover it up.

You grip the steel band that’s been on every phone and complain the back is slippery
even though it’s frosted ? 🤣

but an aluminum band yup that much better

I feel an IPS coefficient of friction lab coming on

Never used one.

I see... the only thing that I would be concerned with is damage and scuff marks that would either lower the resale value or make the iPhone ineligible for a trade in because damage. Because nobody wants to buy an ugly iPhone because it wasn’t protected or well taken care of.

Yup, that has definitely come to bite me in the behind more than once. I know it sounds silly - a cheap case would go a long way towards preserving the resale value of my phone, but I just dislike the feel of cases on my phones.

I am weird that way. :p

I try to go naked, but always fail. It’s the camera bump that makes me put a case on it. The best and most unique cases are at airportag.com. I can’t wait until they have cases for the new line up. Not sure why they don’t have them already (annoying) but they will. Not trying to market a product here, just trying to share information on a product I love.

I’d take fingerprint magnet over matte any day.

This is my first matte iPhone in years and it feels like a slippery bar of soap. The phone is especially slippery when my hands are dry.

The phone is in my pocket most of the time anyway. I never found fingerprints to be an issue because as soon as I put it in my jeans, the cloth automatically wipes all fingerprints away.
You’d rather have a slippery phone that can likely fall out of your hand, just because of fingerprints?

Barely anyone can see the back of your phone. Fingerprints easily wipe off just from inserting my iPhone into my pocket and out of it.

Normal glass has more grip. Way better than a matte finish.

Yes, also confirmed by several reviews. Most people use a case though.

So they did it because it looks nice, but justify the extra slippiness with “most people use a case?”

But if you use a case you can’t see that it looks nice.

Unless it’s a transparent case.

But even a transparent case won’t show you the “matteness” of it.

Wow, I woud have thought that this 'matte' finish would give it more of a texture like frosted glass meaning slightly better grip than pure glass.

I think Apple justified it by claiming the most durable glass in a smartphone.

But of couse, Apple would never claim a slippery glass.

It does exactly that. Not sure what planet some of these people are on. The iPhone 11 Pro has insanely high build quality and is very grippy. Tried it out right next to my iPhone X, which I am holding onto until next year.

It’s definitely more slippery than my iPhone XS and iPhone X. No grippiness at all.

Nothing weird about it. I can't stand cases, either. Not only do they make the phone larger and more of a PITA to slip in/out of pockets, but they also hide the beautiful design of the phone! Oh and skins/wraps also suck because no matter how perfectly you apply them, they still are at least .03mm thick (or whatever) - you can feel the edge, wherever it may be, and it's annoying.

For me, it's naked, all the way, with AppleCare in case I drop the phone (that's happened once, in the past 11 years of using iPhones)
