Matte or glossy it's fact that a laptop monitors suck for color correction. Get yourself a screen shade and you'll be set be it matte or glossy.

Like others have said, use your laptop monitor as a field monitor but leave all color intensive work for a properly calibrated IPS display.

I took a poll. 45.673% of polls are made up to prove a point.

I have to disagree.. 98.6% of all statistics are made up on these forums. The rest are probably just good at lying lol.

But to share an interesting one, Apple found that 83% of consumer that responded to a poll said they didn't care which screen.... oh nvm we've clearly beat this horse to death :)

More options please!

I completely agree. It's very bad that apple offer so little options for products that would otherwise be amazing. Especially regarding this issue of no matte screens across almost the whole line of products. In that sense, the new Microsoft add really makes a very good point of criticizing apple in the sense that they don't offer options whereas the competition is full of them (too many in my opinion anyway, but the criticism towards apple is still fair).
I left feedback asking for Matte screens, hope they'll do it!

We just want:
matte iMac
matte Macbook
matte Macbook Air
matte Macbook Pro
matte Displays (not like the new 24inch)

I've been thinking about this for a while now..

I've been a mac user for umpteen years now. I'm not a fan of all-in-one solutions so the iMac has never appealed to me and the tower is too powerful for my needs, i could never justify the expenditure. Laptops however, have always been macs. They're simply light-years ahead of the competition in design and functionality.
The thing is I, like many professionals would never choose to buy a glossy/glass display so i'm torn.. On the one hand, my current laptop (MBP SR) will last hopefully last me another two years, on the other hand if Apple continue with this trend of glass displays, i simply won't be buying a mac next time round. No questions asked, i won't use a glossy display every day. I don't want to give up two-finger scrolling and I sure as **** won't be giving up OS X but I will not buy a laptop with a glossy display.

Tallest Skil points out that we are not Apple's target demographic, that they are still shifting units despite our issues but are we not a market? do we not form at least a reasonable percentage of their overall share?

I currently own a mini and an MBP and have had various machines through the years but given the price bumps on the mini, the hardware refreshes for the laptops, they will be losing custom of an 8+ year user and I would think that would be something that would make them reconsider their new direction.

Isn't this being obtuse?

(I'll never buy a glossy laptop.)

Maybe, but it's reality. Can't really argue with it.

That's fine, but if you really hold your breath on these then it looks like you're going to be sorely disappointed. Either you'll give in and buy the glossy screen, or you'll buy a Windows machine.

Honestly, what's so hard to understand about this?

It is hard to understand why Apple need to be obtuse.
Would it kill them to offer a matte option on their displays? I'd pay $400-$500 extra for it (not happily, but I would).

I know TechRestore adresses the problem for $200. I'll wait for the next MB/MBA update. If no matte option is available by then I will buy a cheap MB and send it to TechRestore for fixing. It just bothers me to send a newly bought laptop around the world to a repair shop to make it usable. I think Apple is insane.

I am more stubborn on this matter than Steve Jobs. I will never use a glossy laptop.

I'll never understand why they can't give a stupid option like they did for the 17" MacBook Pro on ALL their computers. I love the iMac but will never buy one with the glassy screen. Same thing for the Macbooks.

May be Apple started targeting people living in the Northern countries, where the sun hides more often than in the south. I live in Italy and sun is almost always an issue with current Unibodies.

Glassy/Matte is not related to professional/all the others. It's related to narcissist vs non-narcissistic people. People who love to see their beautiful faces reflected on the screen vs people who just want to see the screen. I'm in the second group and I am sure Jobs is in the first.

The fact that on the pc-side you find only glossy notebooks is not true. Dell, Lenovo, HP, and may be others have plenty of notebooks with optional matte/glossy screens.

I agree with those who said we'll see a matte-option only if sales numbers drop. And they will, because these screens are way too reflective.

Hey...I'm italian too :)

A little more fuel for the fire.

I have a pre-unibody MBP and I find the matte screen to be a little annoying. My understanding is that all the screens are glossy to begin with and for matte they use some sort of screen coating that makes it anti-glare.

Examining the glossy units in the store I can see more detail in many of the images, maybe due to the level of grain that the screen coating tends to have.

So maybe I would be more upset to see matte go if it was more like the older LCD's that I have worked with where it was truly matte without adding a noticeable grain to the screen.

not really :

matter > glossy + matter cover > glossy.

There are a noticeable difference between a real matte and a glossy with a matte film.

I agree with that statement and I believe it's been several years since Appl sold a true matte screen on a portable. I would disagree that glossy + matte coating is always better than glossy as, I have noted, some things appear more detailed in the glossy than the matte(s) that I have had.

That's just my opinion.

I d really like to commend everyone for some excellent and intelligent replies, let's hope apple takes note of these. If we keep voicing them I am sure they will.

On a sidenote, are we 100% sure that current matte option for the 17" is a matte coating on top of the glossy?

distraction is the main reason...

Do you guys operate your screens at 100% brightness?

When I hear people say, you won't notice the glare, since your screen's brightness will overpower it, I'm thinking: ouch!

I'm a programmer. I stare at my screen all day (figure of speech). I work in an office environment with the typical ceiling-mounted CFLs and at home with a 7watt (35W equivalent) desk light bulb, or natural light. I haven't found myself working outdoors, so can't really tell. Both of the environments I work in are very susceptible to glare. I set my screen brightness to a comfortable level, one that matches the surrounding environment more or less.

I find glossy screens to be a huge distraction. My eyes have a hard time focusing on the screen's contents instead of the random reflections. Any head movement and I loose focus. Concentration thrown out the window (pun not intended ;))

I really love the new unibody design. I find pretty much everything else, but the screens, lovely on these new laptops. I can't describe my disappointment when I found out there was no matte option. I can't spend £2K for a laptop and I don't really want a 17" screen, so that's not an option for me.

It must be a big trouble for them to support two production lines (or part of the production line) for not including the matte option. They've proven that they can match a matte screen with this new design, so it's not an aesthetic or technical reason. It also seems to be a general trend in the computer industry these days. Matte screens are endangered species.

It's a sad story my friends. I was definitely going to buy the new MB when it came out in January, but because of the screen I didn't and I won't. As much as I love the laptop, the glossy screen renders it useless for me.

Apple wants to give you the option to buy a 3000 USD laptop from them and then pay them another 50 USD on top of that. They are for now giving you the option of buying of their older imacs if you want matte.

Maybe if Microsoft gets its act together on windows 7, and it ebbs the stream of people coming into the apple store, Cupertino may get to be a little more responsive to its customers.

Some people gripe about every little change that apple makes to any of it's models, and others rejoice if Steve Jobs drops his trousers to take a pi$$ on their heads.

I've got the uni 2.4 and the 2.33 mbps, and I like the matte on the older one better.
