I thought it was crazy to ignore the well-known HBO brand. I get that it’s more than just HBO content, but grow the established name instead of trying a generic name for everything.

Things must be running mighty smoothly at HBO for THIS of all things to be a topic for them either before when they removed HBO from the name or now adding it back.

I agree that there's not an obvious distinction between TV studio and TV content, but we have the same thing with Hulu and Disney.
Seriously, who would assume the simpsons and Xfiles, both historic Fox TV shows, would be on Disney+ unless you're an actual nerd like us.

Every effort to separate the product from the corporation is mostly a failure. Comcast for example. No one refers to their TV + Internet service provider Xfinity, they just call it Comcast.
In the endmost of the population knows the name "HBO". Arm chair marketing types will cry for a while, but in the end, consumers will recognize a familiar name, and if they know where their fav content is...they don't really care about the name change.

Two years after changing the name of HBO Max to just Max, Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) is reversing its decision. Starting this summer, Max is going to be rebranded as HBO Max.

It turns out that it may have been a bad idea dropping the well-recognized HBO brand name from the Max streaming service and opting for a much more generic name. In a blog post explaining the decision, WBD says that the HBO brand is best known for its consistent, high-quality content, which is what the company wants to focus on.

WBD says that the decision to go back to HBO Max demonstrates the company's willingness to use "consumer data and insights" to "position itself for success," suggesting the name change and the effort to include Discovery content for a wider audience wasn't popular with customers.

WBD Streaming CEO JB Perrette said that going forward, HBO Max won't provide "everything for everyone," but "something distinct and great for adults and families."

The HBO service has undergone several rebranding efforts over the years. The first HBO streaming service was known as HBO Go, and it later became HBO Now. HBO Now was rebranded as just HBO, and then it became HBO Max. After that it was just Max, and now we're back to HBO Max.

🤦🏻‍♂️ so embarrassing. Obviously everyone said Max was a mistake but some executive who gets paid an insane amount of money thought they knew better (I assume).
At least nobody ever switched to calling it Max so people may not even notice.

It never made sense to me with Cinemax existing. I couldn't understand why they weren't prevented from using the Max name, since Cinemax used the branding (i.e. "More Max")

The decision to remove "HBO" was monumentally stupid in the first place. I will never be able to understand their thinking on this. Why on god's green earth would you remove the most iconic part of your name. Makes zero sense! It's like Disney world renaming themselves world. Stupid.

Instead of wasting all this money on these marketing “geniuses”, why don’t they just drop the monthly price? All this says is that the increase in rates is spent recklessly.

At last! I can't stand MAX because it feels overly generic. They should have chosen HBO+ instead of HBO Max.
The name never caused the needle to move one bit on my "care about it" meter. That meter ticked up slightly when that meant I had to download a different app -- but just a tiny tick.

“Max” is so generic that it's hard to search for without adding more qualifiers. What a dumb change to that previously.

The Executive in question: David Zaslav who came from the World of Reality TV, figured himself a Movie Mogul and ran Warner Bros. Studios straight into concrete. Well known in the Industry for taking fully shot and produced Movies and shelving them to take the Tax Write Off!

Compensation: North of $60,000,000.00

Wow, I can't believe everybody is missing the real reason for this....

These big companies like Comcast and WBD are going to be selling off a lot of their cable channels to anyone/private equity, so of course they change it back to HBO Max. So nobody misses all the other channels when they sell them off and they're no longer on the service

The problem with naming it HBO Max is it contains content from other Warner Bros. properties such as Warner Bros., Discovery, CNN, Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, Animal Planet, TBS, TNT, Eurosport.
So? Every streaming service has content from multiple providers. They're not going to call it Animal Planet Max or Eurosport Max. Everyone just calls it "HBO" anyway.

I was traumatized, recently, with 'Gordie Brown' strutting his mustache in the search-hit "Max" movie (I often let my kiddos pick a feature for our Fun Friday).

T.H.Church acted nearly as well as he had always, previously....

Cheers!
