Two years after changing the name of HBO Max to just Max, Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) is reversing its decision. Starting this summer, Max is going to be rebranded as HBO Max.

It turns out that it may have been a bad idea dropping the well-recognized HBO brand name from the Max streaming service and opting for a much more generic name. In a blog post explaining the decision, WBD says that the HBO brand is best known for its consistent, high-quality content, which is what the company wants to focus on.

WBD says that the decision to go back to HBO Max demonstrates the company's willingness to use "consumer data and insights" to "position itself for success," suggesting the name change and the effort to include Discovery content for a wider audience wasn't popular with customers.

WBD Streaming CEO JB Perrette said that going forward, HBO Max won't provide "everything for everyone," but "something distinct and great for adults and families."

The HBO service has undergone several rebranding efforts over the years. The first HBO streaming service was known as HBO Go, and it later became HBO Now. HBO Now was rebranded as just HBO, and then it became HBO Max. After that it was just Max, and now we're back to HBO Max.

They definitely dropped the ball in the name game. Should have gone with the obvious tiers: HBO Air, HBO Pro, HBO Max, HBO mini, and then HBOe. lol

I wonder if after a year or so they'll realize their screw up and bring back the HBO name.

Remember this?

New Coke --> Coca-Cola Classic --> Coca-Cola

The story of New Coke remains influential as a cautionary tale against tampering with an established successful brand.

HBO Max --> Max --> HBO Classic --> HBO 🤣
Only took them 2 years to go back. Not surprised.

it should just be HBO. max can be a feature or function of it if they want but not a separate confusing app.

in fact all apps should get to this point of simplicity again. and if you use a streaming device, ie Apple TV, the local abc, fox, nbc channels should automatically work in your region in their corresponding apps, as they would if you had antenna or only local broadcast through cable, with scheduled tv programing and live tv.

this whole streaming/app is nonsensical in its current state and often a waste of money. one example is sports, I dont watch many but for NBA games its infuriating, if you buy the NBA League Pass app you still get blackouts and no local coverage (dumb), its limited if theyre playing on ESPN, TNT, or some other channel (goes what not all of us have access to those....because streaming). so then you have to get other apps like ESPN, well there is no ESPN subscription it only works with your provider (maybe Cable Co, YouTube TV, Hulu) and its other the same as ESPN+ which is part of the Disney bundle, and ABC? what good luck with that, same situation.

Doing all these botched renames… While getting paid…

Sure is good work if you can find it.

It’s called being a C Level Executive … complete with a golden parachute if you’re a massive failure …

If they had been doing that they would’ve never changed the name to begin with. Think of what they could’ve spent the money on if they would’ve just kept the name that everybody knows that was well regarded for top notch content in the first place Even if they’d been coasting on the reputation largely earned during HBO’s golden age during and post “The Sopranos” …. 🤦‍♂️

I will miss Conan O’Brien’s constant irritation about having to remember that the show he started creating for HBO Max was now on something that was inexplicably renamed “Max”. His show has been renewed for a third season, so I guess he’ll have to relearn “HBO Max” when it’s time to promote it. 😄

The problem with naming it HBO Max is it contains content from other Warner Bros. properties such as Warner Bros., Discovery, CNN, Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, Animal Planet, TBS, TNT, Eurosport.
Yep.

Paramount+ works as a name for some reason.

NBC Universal Comcast Kabletown whatever chose Peacock.

Disney honestly should make Hulu and Disney+ the same, where you can choose the Hulu portal with access to Disney, Fox and ESPN for adults, and a standalone Disney+ app with Kids programming from Disney and Fox, etc. If you subscribe to the bundle, Hulu should not require logging into Disney+ separately for any reason.

Some exec just congratulated themselves for stuffing up the branding and having caused the damage, putting it back the way it was. Why this person hasn't been snapped up by the current US administration is beyond me.

Why not just call it HBO? I’ve never really understood why old TV companies feel the need to have a special brand name for their subscription service, it’s not like that the name people care about.

Same reason Paramount+ and Disney+ added the plus. These streaming services provide the content of multiple cable channels and not just one like HBO, Paramount or Disney

At least they acknowledged a mistake and didn’t hire Dylan Mulvaney to blow bubbles in a bathtub while streaming the Sopranos on an iPad to bring in more of t3H MoD3Rn AuD13nC3.

I have a gripe i'll rant about here (you're welcome). I watched Last Of Us, and got into it. Then Joel died. Now, I thought since it's make-believe that he of course, would come back in some form, but no?

To kill off the main character in a winner like this is beyond belief. I've never seen anything like it. I know that there's some game it goes by, but this was a potential GOT for ATT, and to think they let this slip by them is crazy.
Now they bring back the HBO moniker, which of course will make up for this, ha ha. Too late to bring Joel back, so just the HBO label. Maybe I'm off, but I'm thinking they will lose a considerable amount of money because of this. Were they afraid of some kind of internet attack by gamers, and factored in the costs? Wtf?

Just mho.

If it weren’t for mismanagement, they would have no management at all. Favoritism and nepotism will produce subpar results every time.

Can someone explain how changing the name of your business back to what it was suddenly allows you to make " consistent, high-quality content"?

To be honest, I liked MAX. Sort of a hub for lots of different services, including the Discovery+ stuff up until this month and they got rid of 95% of it so now I have to pay for D+ if I want that stuff. I already get MAX thru AT&T as a "free" bonus so would cost me an extra $10 each month because MAX got cheap. I thought their parent company owned D+?
