Max Tech on YouTube is annoying click bait

A bit of me feels like these “Influencers” are buying products and returning it within the return window

...which is fine by me, because it's a product review--so either a company will ship them a specific review unit, or they'll buy and return the product.

But what I think is very problematic is when YouTubers use ONLY the newest stuff to make their comparisons. They have to realize that not all of us are using the newest versions of things. I can speak to this, because up until a week ago - a week ago - I was using an iPhone 11 Pro.

Tech channels on YouTube nowadays feel like those shopping channels from 80/90’s. Just bunch of copy paste unboxing/reviews with same format and content. I’m even considering unsubscribing from MKBHD now when he started advertising chargers and beds on his channel. Super annoying.

No, but back on the actual topic, I feel like Max Tech's latest video is totally clickbait - and totally deceiving. It should be taken down. There is absolutely no reason to keep a video like that up. Hate to say it, but it's just embarrassing.

I haven’t followed them for the longest time but their latest video invoked a sense of rage in me that I haven’t felt in a while .

Just look at the thumbnail they’ve actually kept a fake date and time for the event Oct 29th 10 Am . I thought there’s no way they’d click bait that hard but guess what ? I was wrong

No yeah, and they've done that same thing in the past. I remember at one point they tried to leak a January Apple event, which of course didn't happen. And the title was something like, "Apple January Event. ARE YOU READY?!" which is just so cringe.

You know, I've just completely lost interest in tech YouTube. Dunno what you think, but I feel it's basically become influencers flexing on how much money they have to buy the newest, best product (EVERY SINGLE VIDEO is sponsored, it seems like).

Not that that wasn't the case before, cause it absolutely was, but I feel there were fewer people doing it back in 2019-2020 than there are now.

Hell, a video came up on my YT feed of a 20-year-old's apartment tour. That guy's my age and literally is just bragging about all the stuff he has. It's pointless, and honestly really disgusting. Guess people think that's okay to do--but when real people meet them in real life, no one's gonna want to talk to them or be their friend because all they do is flex on their wealth and have zero regard for others' feelings. Social media culture is so disgusting. One of the many reasons I don't like it.

I quit watching when they were wrong about WWDC 2021. Their M1 videos were really great, I thought. Kinda went downhill after that, to be honest.

I like some of the retro tech channels but not so much modern tech. Lately YouTube for me is police pursuits 😂

Basically anyone I ever used to love on there almost always has devolved down to clickbait tactics of some form.

That's just the name of the game. Youtube rewards all kinds of stupid ****: clickbait titles, overly-long videos, constant uploading, and worst of all, those cringy Mr Beast style thumbnails.

I agree, I used to watch more MaxTech awhile back (especially during the M1 / Apple Silicon release months) but stopped over a year ago. In general, the more recent crop of Tech Youtubers (eg. MaxTech, Luke Miani), got big from subscribers/views during the 2020-2021 COVID boom where everyone was at home watching content, but has struggled to maintain / get back to that level of engagement and you can tell are struggling on how to release regular content. I feel like Luke Miani has done a better job of staying more "legit", while MaxTech has veered down the slippery slope where there's no turning back.

I still watch MKBHD, Dave2D and even iJustine who I consider the OGs, and are a mix of tech + entertainment, but in general, my tech Youtube consumption is way down and much more sporadic. The machine is what it is. Very hard to make it in today's established ecosystem of "competition for eyeballs".

Was MaxTech ever not a garbage youtube channel? They've been doing clickbait and making misleading or outright false claims for as long as I've been aware of them (since probably around 2020 or so, but I have no idea how long the channel has actually existed for).

For me te worst is when they literally shout at the camera. Also, vadim is way more annoying than max. Stopped watching them months ago honestly, a great channel transformed itself into a bunch of speculation and misinformation disguised as “leaks”…

Unfollow him on YT, unsubscribe and then ignore it when the YT algorithm keeps pushing his videos at you. He's awful, complete clickbait and yes, deceptive.

@Analog Kid I promise I'll take the time to read the post you linked, because I'm aware it provides important context. But for now, I will say that benchmarks are artificial and are honestly a terrible way to measure things.

Truth is that benchmarks are the only way to actually measure things. What people tend to forget though is that they only measure that thing.

A benchmark is a controlled, repeatable test. Its purpose is to focus in on one performance metric and measure that thing objectively, removing unreliable subjective assessments.

The mistakes people make are to measure one thing and think it means another, try to simplify a complex information set down to a single number, or run a test well outside it's expected domain of utility. MaxTech made each of those mistakes and more.

I also think a lot of YouTubers are dishonest when it comes to actually reporting the data. I can't think of specific examples, but don't you think there's at least one instance where someone either manipulated the results, or otherwise cheated by purposefully using slower/faster drives? I get that's not the case here, but it honestly seems like a problem that would've happened. I don't know for sure though.

I'm sure there are, but I don't actually think that video I watched was being intentionally dishonest-- I think it was just ignorant and poorly executed. MaxTech isn't rewarded for educating, they're rewarded for engaging the audience. I don't think they understand what they're doing or how to properly test something. They're adolescents with a gene sequencer reporting the amazing news that half their DNA matches that of peanut butter.

And the audience needs to apply the smell test. This just didn't smell right to me:

Nobody should have believed those numbers, they're absurd. MaxTech should have sensed they were absurd and checked what they were doing-- but they don't know what they're doing, they're too arrogant to think they might have made a mistake, and they surely know that something that over the top is going to drive engagement.
