Maxxed out Surface Book 2 from windows. 7th gen i7, 1tb hard drive, 16gb ram. For $3,300. Compared with 8th gen i9, 4tb hard drive, 32gb ram.

Yea... if you don't want the extra hard drive or process or ram, then don't buy it, lowers the price. This is for the pro market and I for one am absolutely ecstatic this finally has 32gb of ram option!!

Most users won't need 4TB of storage, but it's a good option to have for those professional users who do need the extra capacity.

What is the use scenario where one would need (or even find sufficiently convenient to justify the price for) 4TB of internal storage in a laptop?

Damn thats high, those are sucker prices. You can buy a decent used car that that price. I'm not broke, but I'm not stupid either to spend that kind of money on a laptop.

I hate the price, but I'm ok to pay it because I will use this thing for work and I need to squeeze power out of my machine.

I can't imagine not getting a deduction or having a use for this machine that doesn't make money - its a hard price tag to deal with.

I don't get people freaking out about the price.

That's ****ing 4 TB of ****ing 3.2 Gbit/s flash storage. What do you expect?
Also 32 GB of 2400 MHz DDR4 and Intel probably charges quite a bit for that "i9" moniker.

Well, considering you can get 2TB of SSD storage for a little under $500 x 2 = $1000. So the maxed MBP shouldn't cost more than 3-4k.

You forgot to add the price for the dongles!!!!

For $6699 you can't download from an SD card, plug in a ethernet cable, connect to HDMI, connect any legacy hard drives, etc etc.

The nice thing about USB-C is that a single port can support anything you could ever possibly want. Just use something like this when you need it, the rest of the time you can enjoy your sleek laptop. http://a.co/jgaPYMK

It boggles my mind why no PC manufacturer or Microsoft doesn't do a TV commercial entitled
"Apple Dongles vs. MS Plug n Play" or such things. There's a point where sexy thinness & simplicity make an item not practical. Apple is risking jumping the shark. The dongles alone could be funny props in a TV commercial.
It definitely sounds like an idea Steve Jobs would have if he wanted to ridicule Microsoft.

I thought (by reading all these forums) that everyone here wanted updated Macs.
Now that we have them, everyone is birthing about them...
What gives..? Get life.
People love to complain. Most commenters haven't even physically seen or touched these models, yet assume they are garbage due to <insert random requirement>.

The truth is, as expensive as one can option this thing up, the very base model probably represents more power and storage than many laptop buyer need. I know very few people who actually need a 32GB of RAM, 4 TB SSD, 6 core laptop. I can only imagine the performance of this beast.

Seriously... what is Apple smoking? A $7K laptop?!?

If you need 4 terabytes of internal storage, that's the price you're going to pay. Apple has always had the highest memory and storage prices of any other company. This article really shouldn't even exist. People who need it will pay it.

With DropBox, Office 365, Adobe Cloud Storage, Box and iCloud, people can survive on 128GB machines for work now. It's the creatives who need 1 terabyte and the production houses with 4K UHD dailies who need more and most of them have centralized servers shared by the team.

I can’t wait to see how “cheap” the new Mac Pro will be... macOS is amazing but it’s not worth spending 2-3 times the amount when you can get an even better PC for way less.

What's most disappointing about the price point is that there isn't a better KB, even as an option for a slightly thicker case w/ a 2012-style KB with more key travel w/o the touchbar, that's actually comfortable to type on.

The price of the Max processor/Max ram 2TB storage spec is up $400 from the 2017 version, but I'd be ready pay that to upgrade my 2012-non-retina if this included an *option* for a KB I didn't find uncomfortable to type on? If it included user-upgradable ram/storage? Even better!

The fetishizing of Thin over any other possible feature in Apple's Pro laptops is insane at this point. They have more than enough data over 2 (or is it 3 now?) Butterfly KB design revisions to show that it's time to at least make thicker an option for their Pro customers. For both comfort and reliability.

Sigh.

I'm also shocked with the pricing on SSD drives. Why hasn't it come down in price yet?

How does everyone else manage their data?

Just my personal life has

Photo Library - 90 Gigs
Final Cut pro - 932 Gigs (holds all family videos)
iTunes - 7.69 TB (200 Gig is music)
Work files - 30 Gigs

Totalling up the above and just including the music portion of my iTunes I will immediately take up 1.3TB, so, the 2TB option doesn't give me much room to grow but I just can't justify the 4TB upgrade it feels criminal to pay that much.

I don't like the external drive route as its just a pain to plug it in every time if you wanna view family photos/videos etc.

You don't honestly expect standard RAM modules in a 15 millimeter laptop? Of course the chips are soldered to the logicboard.
a 15 millimeter laptop?

I guess therein lies the heart of the problem.

People pay a premium for the these machines, but if a person doesn't opt for every buying option on the day of purchase they're expected to forfeit maximum performance permanently. This only became true in the last few years.
