Seriously... what is Apple smoking? A $7K laptop?!?

with crap video
[doublepost=1531425980][/doublepost]
The price isn’t necessarily crazy by itself, it’s when you look at the idiotic markups on components like RAM and SSDs that should be a fraction of the price.

If I specced out a 7k$ computer it better be a lot better than this.

It is absolutely positively out of this world crazy.

Even worse then!
You forget that Apple is taking more time to do a refresh. Are the bezels slimmer? Next update will probably be in 2028 while you still can get this $ 6,999 laptop for the same price as today. They’ve done it with the Mac mini and the Mac Pro. Something you’ll only see coming from Apple.
Great move mr Cook o_O

a lot of people actually get the companies they work for to buy this for them (totally specced out) as it is easily affordable in multi-million dollar budgets (think movie studios, production departments in finance firms like merrill lynch or deloitte and touche which are billion dollar operations). believe it or not, as i live in nyc and see it with my own eyes, there ARE a LOT of wealthy people out there who have serious cash to blow and this is just pennies.

I work for one of those studios. You can spend a lot of money (and I really mean lot) renting or even buying equipment for a production but it still doesn’t mean you will spend close to 7K on a regular laptop. Let’s get the basics out first. You invest money to make more money. If you are running a multimillion show it means you know the value of money and with 7k you know you want more than just a regular laptop. Think workstation level laptops. That said, it’s the SSD maxed out that is doing the big damage. When some common sense is applied then you can get way more value for money. However, why only 32GB?!? Should be 64...

Well, it only in the last few years became true for every aspect. When was the last portable Mac where you could upgrade GPU or CPU without replacing the logic board? The latter not even in this millennium.
I speak exclusively in regard to RAM and storage. Their internal architecture has scarcely accommodated more modification than that unless you're talking towers. I made all my choices in purchasing my 2013 iMac around this. I opted for the best available GPU and CPU option knowing full well that I wanted to purchase RAM and replacement storage later. Same with my 2007 MBP.

If i made the same choices now, I would have been stuck with whatever they provided me, even if the option for more powerful components had been available to me at the time of purchase. That directly impacts the longevity of any MB purchase and it's inexcusable. It's regressive. They seem to actively discourage the maximum possible lifespan of a computer purchase anymore. Literally by design.

So don't give me this "it wouldn't fit" noise.

This beast is exactly what I asked for and I would buy the i7 with 32 GB RAM in a heartbeat - - except that my 2011 MBP died a few months ago so I already bought a maxxed-out MBP with 16 GB RAM.

Posters sitting in their basements dissing Apple for giving pro users what we asked for are just lame trolls.

I don't get people freaking out about the price.

That's ****ing 4 TB of ****ing 3.2 Gbit/s flash storage. What do you expect?
Also 32 GB of 2400 MHz DDR4 and Intel probably charges quite a bit for that "i9" moniker.

just for 1 TB. Canadian

Not a great move at all. Apple are making Macs obsolete before officially announcing it. Take my late 2015 21.5" 4k iMac for example I cannot use an eGPU because it does not have Thunderbolt 3.

A Mac barely three years old.

Too bad it’s windows driven. I would like to see a touchscreen based laptop from Apple, but I’ll take whatever compromises the MacBook Pros have for the many other pluses they have vs PC counterparts.

Those things run Linux great. I run macOS at work and Linux at home, and they feel very similar. As a developer and for my spare time use linux has all the tools I need, although for professional work it will probably fall short. But something like that laptop with linux feels very tempting when compared to the new MBP.
[doublepost=1531427131][/doublepost]Checked the MBP price here in Sweden.. Maxed out with the extra software options, it's almost exactly $10k here. Eek.

Well, considering you can get 2TB of SSD storage for a little under $500 x 2 = $1000. So the maxed MBP shouldn't cost more than 3-4k.
Based on what?

You're paying for the software and whole package...you're not building your own Laptop, are you?

I get the complaints about the high base price but not the upgrades. Obviously, it’s a small group that needs a high end 4 TB ssd in a laptop, so this is irrelevant to most of us. But it’s nice that it’s there for those who will make good use of it.

You're not aware of how options work?

The thing is you have absolutely NO option for upgrading later if you need more RAM or a bigger SSD, you will have to chose now and pay the Apple prices! Thats insane! I upgraded my 2012 MacBook Pro with a 1 TB SSD for just 250 Euros, and that was a Samsung 850 EVO! Apple is charging 1000 Euros for a 1 TB upgrade! 1000 Euros!!!! What are they smoking??!!

Apple consumers don't know any better, they'll easily pay that much.
Neither do people that only read headlines. When customers go to the Apple website or retail store, they quickly get educated on all the different models and prices and options so they can choose the best one for them. The same thing happens in the PC world when you fully spec out a laptop. The only difference is that no one cares about that headline.

As absurd as it is, Apple and most of their consumers don't care. This has been going on for decades, so you can comfortable say that Apple consumers don't care if they get ripped off.

Not officially but works with a few easy steps. Check my sig than go to egpu.io and you can see how to use eGPU for your iMac.

Plus the cost of docking stations and dongles. There is now a healthy market for these as Apple are so out of touch with the Mac user.

Out of touch? Hahaha. A professional would just by proper cables, rather than be stuck in the past with 20+ year old USB A ports. And move on.

For my 2017 MBP, I spent twenty bucks for two USB-C cables. And $15 for an ethernet adapter.

After purchasing an expensive laptop, I understand that's probably out of reach for the whine-inclined who only feel secure clinging to and stuck in the distant past.

Such an amazing tool is a bit of an overstatement :D Well, first you would need camera dongles on top of that, then AppleCare to replace your keyboard one week later, then actually replace the keyboard when one letter gets stuck and so on.

...or you could buy a $2000 base model with a $1000 eGPU and get twice the effect for half the price

you‘ve obviously never bought film equipment. not sure, if there is even an 8k phantom, but of course you‘ll also need your cables, dongles, batteries, storage, little metal parts that sell for $100 a pop, cases for hundreds of dollars, filters, matte box, baseplate, tripod ... etc. for that. let alone lenses which can cost you easily as much. and then you need something to film. the camera is usually one of your lesser worries, financially speaking. but you won‘t buy that camera anyway, you rent it with an operator for thousands a day.

What's with huge increase of price in EU??? 2799$ vs 3299€ for same specs. Unbelieveable!

actually, it‘s €2744 if you buy it without VAT. gonna compare apples to apples. that still translates to usd 3202, though.

This is only partly true. Yes, they have always charged a premium markup for first-party RAM and storage upgrades at time of order, but not being able to just order the cheapest base configuration and do your own upgrade after sourcing your own RAM and storage from third party vendors, that is a relatively new phenomenon in the Mac world.

The people who always ordered the maxed out machine from Apple directly may not care or notice the difference, but the people who used to save a decent amount of money this way are understandably upset.
