Is it just me or does it seem like a lot of people have their Dashboard icon on their dock? Do they use the icon or just not realize they don't need it there?

You can't get rid of it without 'hacking' because it is always on/open.

For me all you have to do is drag it out. No "hacking" is required.

I actually do click it quite often. Habit really. I still use F12 sometimes but really have not gotten into that habit.

Nothin' wrong with having it there if you click it (or even if you don't I guess)... just wonder if some people don't know... :)

anybody know a good free alternative to candybar?

URGHHHHHH! a free app to do themes would also be great!
why must all good things in the world be tied to having a credit card?

Okay - here we go :)

To the best of my knowledge, there is no free (or otherwise for that matter) alternative for CandyBar. Without any program at all, you can change a lot of the icons on your computer, but CandyBar allows you (**really**) easy access to some of the more buried icons in the system (think, the Finder icon in the Dock). So, if you're looking for something simple, like, changing the icon for you HD, PM me...if you're looking for something deeper in the system, just shell out the $13 for the program - it's well worth it.

As for themeing programs - in general, I recommend you stay away from programs like ShapeShifter. Programs like that have processes that run ALL THE TIME and skin programs as they sit in RAM. In theory these are "safer," as they don't edit system files, but they come at a performance hit (sometimes a large one).

If you really want to theme OS X, I recommend one of the following (a simple google search should bring up all of them, but I'll link to them anyway):
- Iridium (white-ish, plasticy, overall nice) http://sagefire.org/files/iridium/Iridium.dmg
- UNO (number of options, very nice) http://gui.interacto.net/
- SmoothStripes (the one I just started using, I LOVE it) http://www.maxthemes.com/themes/downloads/tiger/SmoothStripes 5.1.2.zip

Hope that helps! If you have any other questions, PM me. I'll happily answer whatever you throw at me (if I can answer it).
