Maybe you are just crazy. Here's to the crazy ones... :D

As an alternative, anodized aluminium can be dyed (the surface layer of aluminium oxide absorbs and holds dye). It's how the colored iPhones are given their space grey or gold color.

And the watch is supposed to be water resistant - so it's an option.

You'll need a special dye IIRC. Probably best to stick to pale colors to minimize signs of unevenness or eventual wear

I highly doubt Macrumors users are into sporting fake gold Apple watches. Just like we don't buy Dell laptops and put an Apple sticker on the lid to make it look like a Macbook.

Never said anything about changing brands.

Never said anything about sporting fake gold Apple watches.

I don't see any wrong in customizing items you own.

If you were going to paint your Apple watch with a Ironman color scheme I would completely cheer you on but in your opening statement you are clearing saying you want a gold apple watch but since you can't afford one you want to paint yours gold. You are literally creating a fake gold Apple watch.

With that statement, I'm guessing all gold items Apple creates (MacBook, iPad and iPhone) are all fake?

Again, don't see any problem whatsoever if I paint it gold or rose gold if I enjoy the look and feel. Personal preference.

no Apple product that comes in gold color is 10X the price of the product in another color except the Apple watch. It's fine man do what you want.

Since I can't afford $10k Apple Watch Edition, this came across my mind. What if I spray painted my Sports Edition aluminum body with gold paint (don't care if it turns out matte gold, might look better to match my gold i6p).

Am I the only crazy person to think about this? Has anyone else thought about painting their new Apple Watch? If so, what color?

I'll be preordering the Sports Edition and will update this thread periodically. :)

You can get some pretty good chrome gold spry paint.

But, why not use real gold;) I just found this, have no idea how well it works or anything, but it's interesting for sure, instead of dipping you paint it on.

You really care that much to have a gold :apple: Watch...?

If having the gold watch is that important to you, go for it!

Some entrepreneurial folk stand to make a killing selling off gold plated/sprayed Apple Watches.

How good of a painter are you? unless you take the watch apart or mask off perfectly all parts that you don't want to paint, then you will have paint where you don't want it, ie. lens, speaker, etc.

If you go for it, good luck! it is a small device.

What's with all the negativity?

I think it's a huge risk unless you're pretty skilled. But I also think matte gold could look pretty cool.

Good luck to you!

As you say, this will take lots of skill to pull off, and I think the negativity is because it seems unlikely for someone with the necessary skills to feel the need for reassurance/ support from a general forum like MacRumors.

I would investigate other ways of "colouring" Aluminium, before resorting to actual paint.

Perhaps there is, for want of a better term, a way to stain it a colour?

please don't

because every time you update this thread, it goes back to the top of the list, and it's not a topic worth talking about

and other threads are worth talking about? im sure someone reading macrumors might consider spray painting if mine turns out awesome!

some are, yes

then go to those threads and ignore this and other "pointless" threads.

Yes sir... Now if you do attempt to use AppleCare after you painted your watch, I would definitely be interested in that thread, make sure to notify me

This won the forum for me today.. hahahaha!

Just stay out of sketchy areas or you'll get jacked for what they think is 10 grand waving in the wind.

I doubt spray paint will give you the look you want.

There used to be a company called AnoStyle that anodized iPhones and iPads. They looked great and their anodization was much stronger than Apple's. I guess they closed up because their websites goes somewhere else. I think the watch will make a bigger market for this, if the price is right. Here's a video of it. https://youtu.be/scidXRA9jzI

Maybe look into anodizing. There's many videos on YouTube of the nature of anodizing at home.
