Hello!

I just ran Apple diagnostics today to have a look at the feature and because the window to return the machine is closing so I want to be sure that everything is ok.

So I shut down the macbook, pressed the power button and kept pressing it, then a new window came up with options and all and I pressed command-D.
Diagnostics ran and at the end I got error code NDR006, saying there might be a problem with my trackpad. Do I have to be worried? Can anyone with a Macbook Air M1 reproduce this? My trackpad is new and it's just working fine.. no hickups or anything...

I just ran the test for kicks and it came up with the same error - NDR006 - there may be something wrong with your trackpad.
And if you follow it up a Safari page loads telling me to take it to an Apple place to be checked

Yea, it's telling me the same. But it's working fine. I'm just wondering if this is a bug or If this shows me an error I just can't see and notice now but that is there...

Lol. I know how you feel :) Mine's a MBP.
I could understand if it was the keyboard. I'm not 100% sure about that but my trackpad feels fine (though it's the first time I've had one that doesn't actually click).

Tested mine and no issues found, however showing battery service recommendation in system prefs.

I'm in contact with Apple about this issue. It doesn't seem to be a bug. They told me to make a new installation of MacOS and run in secure mode to exclude software problems. I guess this is a real issue and something is happening to the trackpad. I asked on reddit, too, and only one other person has this problem...

Interesting. It's unlikely to be a software issue on mine as I re-installed 11.1 quite recently and all seems well with it.
The only other thing I'd question is the performance of the keyboard on mine. I know it sounds like a joke but to my mind it seems to keep missing letters out of what I'm typing :)
Now that could be my typing, though it's not a usual failing for me. Honestly!
My point being that both the keyboard and the trackpad butt up to the batteries, if I understand the layout of the internals correctly.
In light of previous battery problems on previous models it's just a thought that springs to mind.

So I chatted with Apple Support twice, and the technician told me to exchange it through the store because it's easier and faster than opening a ticket through support. It's definitively a hardware issue. I would recommend you to do the same because it would be a real headache if the keyboard fails after the warranty. It could be as well affect the keyboard.
I don't think it is software related because more people would be affected then. But I found just 1 comment on reddit and 1 commented in a post I opened there. And 4 people out of millions, who bought those devices, how likely is that? Google also has no results on that matter.

My thoughts exactly but all Apple stores are closed here so I have no choice but to go through Apple support.
They'll presumably need to arrange pickup by courier if I decide to return it.

yea, they meant the online store. I didn't know that but they differ between support and online store. I first chatted with support and they told me to call a number and that the exchange will be made by colleagues from online store.
The new MacBook Air is on its way.

Good result then :)

Got the same thing, but now it’s gone.

For me I also have the problem that the USB-C charging cable is broken (in 1 month?). So for me it was probably some interaction with the USB controller, if the trackpad is also on USB.

(or maybe there was a temporary software problem with Diagnostics, which gets refreshed/downloaded each time)

Glad you were able to get it resolved, John. Good thing you followed-up with Apple, instead of taking my suggestion that it was probably software glitch and don't worry about it.

Thank you... I thought about a glitch myself before posting here and I hoped it would be just that... but I figured that if it’s just a bug more people would have it so I thought why not annoy the guys at the apple support chat with it. And they took it very serious...

Do they actually send you a new one before you returned the old one?
I have problem with iPhone from online store and I want to exchange it but I was not aware this is possible. They told me to return and rebuy but new ones available weeks later, so can't really do that...

Then just a wild guess with the issue you reported if you see no problem with the device but just failed diagnostic. I would not be amazed if it was just some keyboard or OS language thing. Does all those who pass the test have US keyboard or OS language?

Yea, the very nice woman of the online store told me that I will be contacted by a courier and that I should set the date that it is the same as my new MacBook is expected to arrive so I don’t have to be without it. She told me that with MacBooks this is possible. I don’t if this is possible with iPhones.

@error code thing:
Yea I thought first it would be something like that but support was very serious about it. I mean I know there are a ton of bugs in software but those error codes are supposed to be triggered by real hardware issues. It could be something simple like a cable not connected properly, it could be something serious that’s going to fail.

I didn’t want to take chances with the new device. And as I said not very much people have got this code so this is not very common.

I’m having a German keyboard because I’m from Austria by the way. :)

If you have AC+, you ask for Express Replacement Service and Apple will send you a new device, put a temp hold on the credit card of your choice until they receive the problem device in return. The turn around time is usually 2 - 3 days. Apple uses overnight shipping when available.

I see. But you still need to give your old to the same courier when he/she brings the new one? So you have no chance to see if the new on is acceptable? I rather not push my luck this way, as I know from the past that replacements can be even worse.

I guess well see how it was when you get your new one. But I would not be surprised even support did not know something. I once exchanged 5 monitors when support said they are not supposed to be that bad I showed them they were, only after that they said, yeah they are like that. :D

I know that but I'd rather not want refurbished right away as replacement since I paid for the new iPhone full price. I don't even have AC+, I could still buy it but I see no reason to pay even more for such since in EU there is by law 2 year warranty practically.

There are two separate couriers. The new one is delivered by a normal mail service and the defect unit is picked up by a special service...

yea but I guess if 5 monitors have an issue that it was all over the internet. This sounds like a much more common problem. If you google NDR006 you’ll find a guy in apple tech support on Reddit who had the same issue and all the other threads open by me on Reddit, macrumors, macuser and the official support forums. And there are now about 5 guys that came up with the same issue.
I’ll report back if this issue still is there...

Do you still need to do both delivery and pickup the same day, or can you have some extra time to hold them both?`
I mean if there was like 1-2 days, I'd be fine with that with my iPhone in case they even do that for the phones.

Yeah, I would think so too but I guess peoples are just f***ing blind these days or they accept pretty much anything with the quality brand logo on it. :D

Here's the info about the iPhone express replacement service, an option that's available if you have Applecare+. You have 10 days to return your original device. You might want to post about this in the iPhone forum if you have more questions about it.
