Where did you get such a good deal??

It popped up on Slickdeals. It was from hhgregg.com where it was $300 and another $200 coupon code you could insert. All in all, $500 off for a brand new MacBook Pro 16". Waiting for my case and keyboard cover before fully using it. Hope you find a better deal!

The 16" is one of the best MacBooks Apple has made. Performance and battery life is awesome.

A lot of the issues are Catalina related. I haven't had many software problems myself, but I still think Catalina has been one of the most bug-ridden Mac operating systems.

It is indeed the best laptop I've ever owned from Apple. Fast, responsive, nice keyboard and screen, loads of 'disc' space and RAM.

... and balanced by those daily hygiene factors where the Cinema Display screen is randomly blacked out from wake (workaround: turn mirroring on and off), now the laptop's screen's gone all washed out (will leave it as it's the secondary screen, but it'll reset itself at the next wake). And that's just today.

Am sure it's just some broken drivers. Hopefully it'll be fixed by the time 10.16 comes out.

I want to make the plunge on the 16” but as soon as I come to this forum, I am bombarded with quality issues on the 16”.

Should I wait for a 2020 update and hope Apple addresses these issues, or are people just blowing it out of proportion because it’s a new product?

I’ve learned to take the bendgate issue on iPads with a grain of salt because my iPad Pro never came close to bending, but MBP’s are over double the price...

Neither. People are far more motivated to point out negatives than positives, and this forum is viewed by many (correctly or not) as having the attention of Apple designers. Of course, you’ll also see “fan” bias here, so it’s best to generally assume that individual posts (even lots of individual posts) do not necessarily indicate a trend.

moderate quality at a high cost
if you dont like it; dont buy it

Its a great laptop. You can wait, but their will be people who complain about that one too.

People think that when you spend the amount Apple charges that you should get a perfect laptop. There is no such thing and Apple has never made a perfect anything. What they do make in my opinion are the best laptops money can buy. Whether or not paying that much is worth it to you depends on your situation. But I woudn't wait expecting some mythical laptop to be created because it will be the exact same laptop we have now with a slight spec bump, which is an excellent machine.

The 16’’ is a fantastic MacBook. The best unit for years & 100% glad I bought it. If you were to believe all the doom & gloom on here then no one would ever buy one again! Ignore the waiting for the 2020-2021-2022 latest MBP sticky threads because if everyone waited we would never have one.

Enjoy

That’s a fair statement. I can hold out a little longer so I’m waiting to see what happens next. But if I really needed one I would probably still get it even with the problems I’ve experienced. .

I have a MBP16 and find it perfect in every way. Ive honestly had none of the issues described above (bar the external display issue as I do not use one). Completely happy with mine and intend to keep it for the next few years at least....

Same here. I do wish wifi was V6/better; my iMac Pro wifi performance is much faster. Other than that - it's faster than my old trashcan D700 8 core Mac Pro (which was fast enough for real time 4K video editing with an effect or two applied), and is within 30% performance of my 10 core Vega 64 iMac Pro.

I am very impressed.

Responding to the original post.

It's a tough question, but at the end of the day the way I see it is that all consumer electronics have issues and if you spend long enough on the single largest support forum for them, you're going to find a lot of horror stories that could steer you away from just about any device.

Every Newegg review section for PC components has a ton of 1-star reviews claiming DOA or failures just out of warranty. Every phone release lights up its respective forums with day one issues and pitchforks are raised en masse. Hell, I was looking for a good power strip the other day and I couldn't find a single one on Amazon that didn't have a couple of customers showing that theirs had caught fire.

Sometimes people blow things out of proportion or use a device improperly to cause problems, but some like you and I *definitely* experience real problems too. The best you can do as a consumer - save for extremely widespread problems like Touch Disease or Butterfly Keyboards - is to buy what you really want, hope all goes well, and exhaust the appropriate channels if you experience otherwise.

I have actual, often near-debilitating OCD and personally I find that the less time I spend around this forum, the less time I spend endlessly nitpicking my possessions and expecting a perfect world.

So true!

I would wait. Screens are bad.

They're not though, are they?

You need to put a bit of context around the screen stuff when talking about these panels. There's a difference between having a faulty screen and not being happy with the colour levels on a screen which may be within tolerances but which you don't think are acceptable.

The ghosting thing is another problem which doesn't affect or get noticed by everyone. So is it a fault?

The problem like this is that on these forums you do tend to get people reading about these things and then going looking for them which skews things somewhat.

So is it a fault?
Yes to a degree. Apple cut corners and is using a display that they probably wouldn't have in the past.

In short, Apple has marketed itself as a premium computer maker, it continues to market its laptops stating how much superior their displays are. Yet with the 2019 MBP, they are anything but premium or excellent. True they may not be defective and many people are ok with the lack of vibrancy or don't notice the ghosting but that doesn't mean its all right.

I see more people trying to excuse these shortcomings then hold apple accountable. You can easily pay 4,000 for one of these laptops, I don't find it acceptable to have an inferior display on such an expensive model.

I remember similar threads about "how yellow is my screen" going back years and years, so its obviously not something that's just happening.

I don't know enough about the available panels out there to see what the acceptable tolerances are or if this is just a crappy screen. But outside of here Apple get frequent praise about the consistently good image quality they achieve on all of their products, so that's why its strange seeing some of the comments in here and trying to understand them objectively.

I know they do get criticism about the native resolution of the screens in the MBP in particular, but the ghosting and yellow tints seem to be very much an online thing.

Having calibrated my display with a colorimeter I can state that my colors were accurate already with the factory calibration.

I would recommend that people try switching off all settings that automatically adjust the brightness and white point, e.g. night shift. An overall color cast can be the result of a bad white point setting.

IMHO, yes there are quality issues. Mainly because I, as well as some friends have experienced similar issues that have been problematic.

I'm not sure that should cause you to not get one as there are many who have gotten ones that are perfect.

From my perspective, its a great machine barring true quality issues. But at this stage, I think they have worked a lot of those out and the recent shipping models (i.e. within the last couple of weeks) have many of the issues worked out. Getting it from NewEgg may end up giving you one that may have issues as its likely older inventory. Maybe consider getting one from Apple directly.

My only advice is if you do get one, get AppleCare. I will state Apple has been great about getting me a new machine because I had a crappy one. With Applecare, you have a bit stronger voice in getting your machine buttoned up in the event that you do find an issue.

Just my .02 and good luck on your decision.

I am so peaceful and happy about my 16-inch MBP. After a couple months now, I am not questioning that this is my next Mac to last me the next 5 years with zero problems! (Like my old 2012.) And if there are, well my own country has strong consumer protection laws if things go south.

Everything seems stable now - no more T2 crashes, no other things I was noticing, it's really settled in.

Everything is relative and no machine is perfect. Apple products (like this one) are usually miles ahead in quality than any other manufacturer's device. (E.g. trackpad.)

Although Apple is on the verge of radically updating their MacBook line with arm chips etc, I STILL don't care and I just feel comfortable with what I have, and that should tell you something.

Just check my forum history, I had to live through the 2017 and 2018 models.

This keyboard is beautiful. Zero problems. (I write full-time for a living, on this machine, so I would know.) The speakers are awesome. This thing is stable.

In fact, I am only here because I wanted to post somewhere in here today that "IT'S ALL OVER!!!" For once, I wanted to post some positive feedback. This is why we have loved Macs in the first place. They're the best.

Edit: I take this BACK! The problems are NOT gone! But they are way less often than the 2016-2018 models era.

No the screens are not "bad" AT ALL.
Something is clearly up with the screens, I can not say all because I have not tested all obviously. But there is some eye-straining/motion sickness to this screen that I have never experienced before. I don't know if it the ghosting/smearing that my screen 100% has, or in some other thread someone mentioned that "dithering" is the problem at work here.

I am not used to work on latest "gaming" screens. I have a Macbook pro 13" 2015 that is fine. Also my external monitor is about 15 years old 60hz screen connected to my windows PC and no issues there.

Very strange problem.

Ghosting is really terrible on my machine (December built), causing motion sickness when focussing on texts while scrolling. @StolenPhone, do you know if they solved this issue in recent shipping models? The reason I ask is because I visited an Apple store a few weeks ago and I checked the demonstration model to see if it had the same smearing effect when scrolling though text websites. It may have been my imagination but it seemed that this model didn't have any smudging, which is odd as I read in this forum all screens are subject to the same type of ghosting. Not sure what to believe now and if there has been an update to the panel or some panels or worse than others. Anyway, I have Applecare, do you think 'ghosting' is enough reason to get a new model using Applecare?
