Hmmm... just go to the Apple MBP discussions page and choose Internet and Networking category, you'll find a lot of complaints about the piss-poor performance of the wireless card and all things related to wireless internet connection, pings goin bonkers and etc...

As far as I'm aware, this issue affects all 2011 MBPs. The people who claim that their system is perfect probably just haven't noticed the issue.

Now that you mention it... when I first got the machine I was streaming an MKV from my server over 802.11n and it did stutter a bit, which I thought was odd, since the AP was only about 2.5" from the laptop. I usually have my machine on the wired network, but I was using it that afternoon to configure a network camera.

I have the maxed out 15". And I have no problems at all. My 2011 MBP runs 10 degrees C cooler than my 2009 MBP. I don't know all of the problems out there.. but I'm VERY satisfied with my computer!

Nope, my AirPort connection absolutely screams. I routinely get ~100Mbps throughput (over 5GHz 802.11n) when copying files to/from my AirPort disks (connected to my AEBS) to/from my new MacBook Pro. I will concede that this could very well be because I have an Apple router, but still, I've experienced no issues.

From everything I can see, it's about latency not bandwidth. Open a terminal window and ping another machine on your network. You'll get erratic pings.

I did this just for fun and as I let it run, the ping between the MBP 10' from my AEBS and my Mac Pro that's connected to the AEBS via Gig-E ranged from 1ms to 260ms. Mostly it ranged from 5ms to 30ms, but it shouldn't even be that erratic.

For reference, I can ping my wife's HP netbook that's 2 floors away from my Mac Pro. I get between 1ms and 2ms steady.

It's apparently some over-zealous power management, because the latency is normal if you ping while transferring files (it seems to put the connection to sleep when you're not using it).

The practical issue for me is online gaming; apparently the small amount of bandwidth used for gaming isn't enough to kick it out of "sleep mode".

As far as I'm aware Apple has not officially acknowledged the issue so if you're experiencing it that I encourage you to log it with Apple.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8H7 Safari/6533.18.5)

I have the maxed out 2011 15 version and so far has been great except a small light bleed on bottom right but no big deal. It is the ag ones.

2.3/8GB/hi-res/SSD here and couldn't be happier. I got about 7 other colleagues with the 15 who will tell you the same.

I haven't had any of the issues myself, but that doesn't mean they aren't occurring. Some things people have reported IMO aren't issues and other would make me scream if my system did that.

I did also notice slower internet speeds at first but I do not anymore. Speed tests on my wireless Cable system bring:

ping: 13ms
download: 15.75Mbps
upload: 3.47Mbps

...I have no idea if that is good or bad though :p

What internet issues are they having? My 2011 15 inch MBP picks up a lot LESS wireless networks than my 2009 13in does...

That's surprising to hear b/c i had the exact opposite observation - many MORE wireless networks than my 2007 MBP.

It must not be an internet issue as my ISP lists their maximum download speed at 15Mbps

I have 2 with the same issue and 1 I returned with the same issue. So 3 of 3, 2011 MBP shipped to me in the last month have it. Here it is:

The MBP will not wake up from sleep mode. The screen stays black and a hard re-boot must be done. Some times closing an opening the screen will result in a garbage display, some times not. Must hard re-boot to get going again.

The MBP wakes from sleep mode and the screen is garbage. See attached picture. Hard re-boot to fix the issue.

The MBP wakes from sleep but it takes an extraordinary long time before the screen is displayed and then longer before it is responsive to key-strokes or mouse movement.

All have this configuration

MacBook Pro
2.2 GHz Intel Core i7
8 GB 1333 MHz DDR2
15 inch hi-res anti-glare display
7200 RPM 500 GB Hard Drive

Received 2 of these mid March 2011. One was infrequently having this issue. Returned that one and got a replacement last week. The replacement started showing the issue this weekend. The other 'original' one just had the problem for the 1st time today.

Something ain't right - that's for sure. Would like to hear from anyone else having this or a similar issue.

Now I think about, mine does the same. Same specs, although I have the glossy high-res. Having said that, I Fold@Home, and I believe thats what is causing the problem. When I unload Folding@Home, then sleep it and re-open, it's fine. Only intermittently do I get the problem.

Also, I do have Wi-Fi issues still, random drop outs and the Mac not remembering Wi-Fi passwords, as well as variable speeds.

Sure enough, my pings are all over the place just as you reported, yet if I ping my PC (instead of my MBP) from my iMac pings are consistently 1-2ms. Hmmm. I'll have to check out the Apple Discussions but hopefully this will be addressed with a Software Update.

I never noticed this issue because I don't do anything on my MBP that requires low network latency, but for online gaming, this would be a complete non-starter.

I know nothing about Folding@Home, but the display issue when waking from sleep is intermittent, only happens about once a week, but obviously it should never happen.

Just remembered - I had one of the MBP's drop it's wireless connection and when re-connecting it didn't even remember the network password, had to re-enter it.

Same thing happened to mine..i called apple care and they told me to do a pram reset. Supposed the recent os update was supposed to take care of this problem. it was working fine after that, but it is now doing it again. its something that isn't really "reproducible" all the time. im planning to take it in to the store and see what it says. i took a print screen of it to show them what im talking about.

have you found a solution? im just hoping that they just give me a new computer because this is the 3rd time i've taken my macbook to the store for repairs (not related to this though)

I have no issues with mine at all.

15", 2.2GHz, 8GB G.Skill, 256 Apple SSD with 128GB Apple SSD in optibay, High-Res Glossy.

Transmit rate constantly at 300Mbps on 5.0GHz band. No problems connecting to Apple TV and streaming videos, no problems with signal strength or connectivity.

BUT... this is a replacement machine, first one had a dent on the bottom and a circle of light in the center of the screen. That one always showed one or two bars for the wireless and the bluetooth would keep dropping the connection.

Glad my new replacement is perfect.

I don't know of a solution. I called my Apple Corporate Customer Care Administration contact, and she said she couldn't authorize another replacement w/o it being diagnosed, even though I had screen pictures of the problem. She said it would be better if I took it to a Genius bar instead of doing it on-line. I'm close to an Apple store so I'm taking both the ailing MBP's there tonight after dinner. I'll let you know the outcome.

Not to hijack or anything, but what does one consider 'high end'?

2.2 GHz, 8GB RAM, Hi-Res, SSD...?

High-End is having every option maxed-out, like u said--

-Processor = 2.3GHz
-Memory = 8GB
-HD = SSD (512GB)
-Display = Hi-Res

Thanks for all the feedback guys, much appreciated.

My main concern was that the uni-body design was never meant to handle the high performance heat caused by the quad-processor & graphics card. If you look at the uni-body there really is only one small slit to vent the heat. (at the hinges of the screen connecting to the body on the computer base) This is why i believe that Apple will release a new body design much sooner than history has shown us. but then again with all the focus on the iPad 2, iPhone 5, and iMac i don’t know if that would be a priority to Apple.
