Why did you buy a MacBook, one of the most expensive devices on the market, if $350 for Apple care is too much?

Sell the device, as Apple produce retain most of their value and buy a computer with a normal keyboard(every other laptop that exists.)

Not like switching to Windows is very difficult. Arguable Windows 10 has more feature, though I don’t find it as refined. You don’t lose much.

This doesn’t seem reasonable to me. You seem to be implying that if someone buys something expensive, they should be ok with having to buy other expensive things. Sometimes that’s true (like the premium gas recommendation for luxury vehicles), but usually it isn’t. In fact, a lot of people stretch their dollars to be able to afford a luxury item that they really want—which makes an additional and unforeseen cost even more of a hardship. When that additional cost is because of an inherent flaw in what they expected to be a high-quality product...well, it’s not crazy to me if that rubs some people the wrong way.

Also, Apple laptop resale value leads the industry, but it’s been definitely worse in the past several years relative to about a decade ago. I used to upgrade every cycle because it was quite cost effective to do so. Not anymore.

Completely agree if you're buying a perceived luxury product that is more expensive than competing products you want a great experince. If there are flaws you want them resolved with minimal fuss. I am rocking a mac book pro 2013 which need a screen replacement after the law suit for the design flaw I didn't need to pay for it.

Clearly Apple doesn't produce quality products and you need to pay an Apple additional $350 to cover their expenses, since their products are so ******, that they will only vouch for it for a year.

Apple could have designed a keyboard that didn’t have an obvious design flaw which would make me needing AppleCare unnecessary. I’ve never needed AppleCare before. It’s also entirely possible I’m at a different point in my life right now which hinders me from spending $350 I don’t have.

Apple should be able to design a keyboard that does not have an obvious design flaw--I agree. Anyone who thinks differently should examine the Dell XPS 13 (2018) and the Lenovo X1 Carbon, both of which possess fully functional and durable keyboards in chassis which are comparable in thickness to Apple's MB(P) lines.

Damn! It also happened to me. Have a 2017 15" MacBook pro. The '.' key just started to malfunction. I had the keyboard replaced two times on my 2015 12" MacBook (under AppleCare), but hoped they had it improved for the 2017 model, but no. I'm joining those lawsuits! Yes, this keyboard can be replaced under AppleCare, but I'm 3 months in China and have to live with the keyboard until I come back.

FWIW, I've just had my 2017 MBP top case replaced (due to the keyboard issue). Another MacRumors forum member and I believe there's some upgraded design in there as the keys feel slightly different. Fingers crossed that this revision does it.

I also had the keyboard case on my iPad pro replace twice (Apple has extended the warranty for this known flaw). Why can't Apple make reliable keyboards?

How long have you used your 2017 15" MacBook Pro? Did you use a keyboard cover?

I got it when they just came out. I do not use a keyboard cover -- I have tried, and I hate typing with them. If that were a requirement for using the computer, Apple should provide them with the computer.

So annoying. The '.' key randomly gives 0, 1 or 2 periods.

Only Apple could mess up the oldest computer accessory.

Keyboards are the one thing that has been there from the beginning. And in the 1980’s we had keyboards that were built to survive everything.

Then Apple comes along... hey, why don’t we see if we can reinvent this thing to make it super thing, and we’ll use microscopic delicate plastic pieces that break under slight pressure. It only has to last until the warranty expires.

Then they find out that they don’t even survive that long, and it takes a class action suit to get them to admit anything.

It’s their pattern though. It always comes down to denying everything until a class action suit gets filed.

Sigh. Had keyboard replaced twice on my 2015 rMB. Now '.' key starts to malfunction on my 2017 15" MBP.. That is not a good statistic.. What, you have to use the computers in a clean-room?

What went wrong with your 2015 15" keyboard? I've never had any issues with those and thought they were fairly reliable.

The butterfly keyboard made its first appearance in the 12" 2015 rMB (not rMBP).

In general the butterfly keyboards seem bit more reliable in the little MacBooks.

You’re right. I was not paying attention. I thought he was talking about the rMPB mid 2015

Yup, and while we hear how class actions are frivolous and wastes of time, they do have some end results (other then making lawyers rich) and that's forcing a company to address the short coming. With two lawsuits filed, hopefully the next version of the MBP will have a beefier keyboard.

My MacBook keyboard has been serviced twice in the last year.

Yes, there are undoubtedly problems with the 12" MacBook butterfly keyboards as well, but they don't seem to have the same high profile that the 13" and 15" MacBook Pro keyboard problems have.

I owned a 2016 12" MacBook for 21 moths of heavy daily non-careful use. I had one instance of a key losing its click feel, but still functioning fine. I was able to clear it with an airblower.
