From what I understand some people have success running MS Office for Windows through Crossover without needing a copy of Windows.

Boot Camp is simple if you follow the directions :)

Hey, following directions IS hard!

On a side note, do you rewrite / copy & paste the second part of your post in every reply? Seems like that would get tiring!

Considering the outrageous licensing on HDMI and the fact that it can't even support the resolution of a 30" display (HDMI maxes at 1920x1080), you won't ever see it on an apple _computer_.

There are more reasons why displayport is superior, but you can google/wiki it for more information.

Version 1.4

HDMI 1.4 was officially announced on May 28, 2009. However, there have been no commercial products released yet under this standard.[56] This version increases the maximum resolution to 4K x 2K (3840x2160p at 24Hz/25Hz/30Hz, and 4096x2160p at 24Hz common for 4K digital cinema), allows 100 Mb/s Ethernet connection between the two connected devices, and introduces Audio Return Channel, 3D Over HDMI, a new Micro HDMI Connector, Expanded Support For Color Spaces, and Automotive Connection System.[56][118]

From Press release you can read of the new Micro HDMI Connector. That gives it another reason for Apple to use it.

Face it. HDMI is the standard and is what the industry will use. It did not take much time from release of version 1.3 to 1.4. The displayport will be sidetracked much as Apple's own Apple Display Connector.

But this is just me not liking the displayport. I am just one customer.

You do realize that AppleTv with it's locked plattform and 1080i and no movies at all in for example Sweden gives that it is pretty useless as a mediacenter. Even a gamesystem like PS3 is a better product. You can not compare a movie download to a full blu-ray in quality.

I said set top box, not Apple TV. The Apple TV is nothing but a hobby. It can't even do 1080 at all.

There are no products that use HDMI 1.4, you likely wont' see any products until late this year (probably next year), so no -- current HDMI/HDMI equipped products do not support any resolution greater than 1920x1080.

In the future it might, but there are no controllers that support this yet and as such, there would be no way for Apple to include it.

DisplayPort is an industry (open) standard. HDMI might own Home Theater for now (or forever for that matter), but I don't think it can provide the same feature-set that is important for computing such as: daisy-chaining, either internal or external cabling (think about a computer company using ONE type of connection throughout the computer -- that's a good thing), can drive displays directly (without need for controllers/scaling circuits -- think thinner panels), etc.

It also supports encryption, color spaces, 3D, etc and is backed by every major PC/computer manufacturer.

DisplayPort's licensing alone makes it a superior product.

Mini display port will probably end up like firewire vs USB 2.0, with Apple finally succumbing to what the public wants. But it will take a long time, maybe in 2 years there will be macs with HDMI that work with what everyone already has.

Blu-ray: 2015
HDMI: Buy an Apple TV.

Why do you want a TV port on a computer? Honestly.

So you dont have to buy an apple tv, seems pretty obvious.

say what? HDMI 1.3 supports 2560x1600. You do realize that even DVI supports more than 1080p right?

Correct HDMI is the standard for consumer electronics

DisplayPort will become the standard for computer.

The requirements of each platform are different enough to warrant two different connectors and frankly Apple's not paying HDMI licensing fees for every computer they ship.

No it won't. Apple's about making computers thin and to do that you have to make sure the connectivity is no larger than it must be.

Mini DisplayPort was ratified for inclusion in the 1.2 specs and Apple's not suddenly going to go back to using full sized DisplayPort connectors when any cable vendor like Monoprice can easily make a MDP-DP cable

HDMI is not coming on computer. I don't think you all understand the technical ramifications.

not coming on computer? or just apple???
As I sit here looking at the side of my dellI have a connector labeled HDMI and a display port. oddly enough the hdmi connector is smaller than the usb.
HDMI 1.4 hmmmm lots of good things there as well as a mini connector

HDMI is far more popular on computers than display port is. Theyve been on PC laptops and monitors for a long time now. I have yet to see display port take priority over HDMI except on an apple product.

Old news. 9/18/2008. The article is too old to matter as a basis for this discussion. It does not take into account 1 year of computer evolution (that is a long time), nor has it hdmi 1.4 nor take into account the large base of windows pc and monitors with hdmi or that consumers get more used to having hdmi on computers at work and home. If the consumer is used to have hdmi then why purchase one without. From the time the article was written new standards and many more hdmi equipped computers, screens and media devices have arrived and been purchased. It does not apply today. Typical example is why vhs won, it was most spread and used. Not the best standard but worked and was used by most. The biggest argument for hdmi is the old and dated way of separating computers from media devices. It does not work like that today with media content everywhere. Apple should know this as it is very much a media company. I have not the data to say that hdmi is more expensive than media port but frankly so what.

Just like the finder connects content wherever, we want 1 media port standard so it just works with content from every device. Then we have wireless hdmi, another breed but the evolution is faster within this standard and not the media port.

Apple will not ship HDMI connectors for computer applications. In fact according to a WinHec 2008 powerpoint HDMI doesn't allow use in All-in-one computers like Apple's best selling iMac. Apple also generally eschews adding too many connectors on their displays so they won't be like Dell and appease people with VGA/DVI/HDMI connectors on their monitors. Also Apple LOVES small connectors (as witness by their use of Mini DVI and now Mini DisplayPort) so they notice those size differences to. ;)

Want small? Micro HDMI is smaller than Micro USB. Thats as small as youre ever going to get without breaking it.

Sometimes its good to charge a license fee, it supports rapid development.

I think we've heard something similar with USB ipods.

Pray tell what stupdendous event in computer and CE happened in the scan 9 months since this article was released?

HDMI 1.4 ...great so It integrates Fast Ethernet and bumps the speed rating (which should make the already flaky HDMI cables out there more flakey over long distances)

Your post is light on technical reasons why HDMI is superior than DisplayPort.

With DP I get flexibility of a packet based architecure
I get single cable dual monitor support (oops HDMI can't do that)
I get an aux channel that can run signals like USB or other control signals
I get 8-channels of LPCM audio
I get a lower voltage system that is easier to integrate into system controllers

All license free.

Rapid development is great but if DisplayPort is license free and offers %90 of what HDMI does in addition to being a more modern system (which it clearly is) then why pay the fee?

The fee is minuscule, what exactly does it affect? Would you rather pay $30 for an adapter to hook your computer up to something or a wopping 10 cents to have the computer not need an adapter?

Is it the $10,000? OEM's pay more than that on printing the box.

why would you need an HDMI connector in system like the imac if its all in one?
Is apple using a mini USB?
I wonder what apple's total market penetration is compared to smaller companies like LG, Sony, panasonic, pioneer, Yamaha, and Samsung whom are pushing HDMI

Stainless you're simply not addressing the "true" issue at hand. It's not really about license fees.

HDMI is a connection that is suited for the display of movie content. That's great and it has greatly simplified the routing of various audio and video equipment.

DisplayPort is aimed what features are needed for the display of computer graphics.

Yes ...PC vendors have taken a CE connection and stuck it on their PCs and can you blame them. Dell is selling the same hardware that HP is who's also selling the same hardware as he bloke down the street. The only way the PC market can differentiate themselves is to keep bloating up their products hoping to "one up" their competitors. Adding stuff like Blu-ray and HDMI outputs improves the marketing appeal but it doesn't really benefit computer users when it comes to productivity.

DisplayPort is aimed as simplifying the connection of computer displays. It's roadmap is going to support high resolution and high "bits per pixel" monitors.

Apple is not going to choose HDMI over DisplayPort because the central focus of HDMI is not on computers and inversely the central focus of DisplayPort is no on CE devices and HDTV.

My guess would be secondary monitor or as an input from another device.

Apple's computing influence is much greater than the Japanese and Korean companies when you talk about selling and marketing whole systems. 9 years ago Apple helped spearhead USB adoption and they weren't even a third as influential as they are now.

DisplayPort is across Apple's entire computing lineup and they're not first here. Dell has been shipping DisplayPort monitors for over a year and Lenovo makes a DP notebook.

We have to think about this from Apple's perspective.

consumer

"I want to hook up my Macbook Pro to my HDTV to watch some movies"

Apple

"It would make more sense to buy an Apple TV, which has a constant connection to your TV, and stream your content to your HDTV"

consumer

Apple

And perhaps there's the disconnect we are discussing.

For most people the true issue is having 1 connection for everything. HDMI is focused on the real world while Display Port is focused on crazy things nobody is ever going to use except for niche industry professionals. As a consumer do I care about daisy chaining monitors? No. How many people are going to have so many monitors on hand that they have to daisy chain them? Do I care about being able to hook my computer up to the TV when the need arises? Yes, I think most people have been in a situation where hooking their computer up to the TV would be wanted. Do I want my computer monitor to support the same connection that my game console does without having to worry about buying a premium monitor with all the connections? Yes.

Let the minority who need display port features worry about making sure they have display port devices. The rest of us would prefer to have everything work together.
