if it's just a huge iPhone/glorified ebook reader, label me as being unimpressed.
1. You have no idea what OS 4.0 is like.
2. Just because it has the underpinnings and app compatibility doesn't mean it will share the same UI.
3. You have not even seen the device yet.

Definitely not. How is saying that 22 hrs before the event going to help at all? An answer like "I think everyone, especially in the higher-ed markets, will be interested in what Apple announces tomorrow. We certainly are." Would be much better and he could even work in a sentence letting the investors in his company know that they have been working with Apple.
