Totally agree. This is going to be another flash-on-the-iPhone debacle. Tomorrow will be day one of people calling for OS X to be on the tablet, hacks to put OS X on the tablet, people refusing to buy cos it doesn't have OS X and Windows people saying "My tablet has a real OS instead of one designed for a phone".

If it has anything less than OS X then Apple are doing the job by half.

He did say BASED on the iPhone OS; just like Steve Jobs said the iPhone was based on OS X.

Remember people, OS is not interchangeable with UI. It makes perfect sense for Apple to take the network, security and underlying kernel of the iPhone OS and transfer it to another mobile product. Do you really think they are just going to slap iPhone OS on it, UI and all, and call it a day? Really?

Definitely not. How is saying that 22 hrs before the event going to help at all? An answer like "I think everyone, especially in the higher-ed markets, will be interested in what Apple announces tomorrow. We certainly are." Would be much better and he could even work in a sentence letting the investors in his company know that they have been working with Apple.

I think if the tablet carries iPhone OS 4, it could be a real contender. If it's OS 3.x, it'll blow. I still want full OS X, though.

I know it was only announced a few weeks ago (but you know Apple gets things ahead of time), but what about a Pinetrail Atom and nVidia Tegra or ION? Sounds feasible to me.

1. You have no idea what OS 4.0 is like.
2. Just because it has the underpinnings and app compatibility doesn't mean it will share the same UI.
3. You have not even seen the device yet.

I think it was Alex Lindsey who said Mac OS X is a lego kit. You can pop parts on and off as needed. So, iPhoneOS is really OS X with a bunch of unneeded parts taken off and some parts replaced.

It's entirely possible the TabletOS is really iPhoneOS with a few more parts clipped on.

Don't be surprised is McGraw hill is conspicuously left out of tomorrow announcement and if their content is kept off the device for a number of months.

Steve has no problem being a complete prick to make a point, even if it damages Apple in the short term.

To anybody that thinks that the Tablet is JUST going to run an iPhone OS or Mac OS is sadly mistaken. Do you really think Apple is that lazy? Lets all remember that the iPhone OS at it's core is still OS X.

That was never going to happen.
Think about it:
* UI designed for keyboard and mouse == cumbersome on a tablet.
* The only reason for regular OS X is for compatibility with existing apps. For that to work you really need an intel processor. (Emulation would be too slow and power hungary) So we'd be talking Atom... which will guzzle battery, relatively speaking.
* If your compatible with OS X apps, you're incompatible with iPhone OS apps -- if you have to pick just one, really, which one would you go for?

Don't worry, Apple might squeeze down the size of the Air for you at some point.

I swear, if they put out another effing product that doesn't have flash enabled Safari on it I'm going to lose it...

No flash on the iPhone - ok, w/e, Hulu would probably suck anyway but, holy cow, that's got to be one of the main points of this stupid thing is to be able to watch TV on the go and you absolutely, positively have to have Flash if you're going to do that...

BTW - chick is hot... He probably didn't want to say anything but thought if he let slip on the Apple news he'd get some

i dont get all this whining.

Mac OS X is Darwin plus Cocoa.
IPhone OS is Darwin plus Cocoa Touch.

Get it?

The underlying system can run on about any hardware thanks to the mach kernel. The frameworks on top are made in such way, that apple can decide to omit them (apple time capsule) or use em with a GUI (apple TV) in a tailored fashion (Ipod/Iphone) or fully fledged (Mac).

So even if it runs IPhone OS, ist so easy to start an Xwindow client and make a connect to a remote X server (on any Mac).

So please, please please stop whining you don't want IPhone OS because then you should stick with a Windows tablet, which does not contain any Mac OS Basic System ( Darwin) except the BSD network stack.
