Odd! All my PS3 Handbrake rips work fine... How big are they.. i wonder if theres a filesize limit? The only ones ive found that are incompatible are Handbrake AppleTV encoded H.264s

Ive had no issues with video since version 1.1, all i can suggest is you email there support people with the video details and see what they say.

Help!

Hello everyone, i am having some serious problems with medialink... i can't get it to recognize my ps3, nor can i get my ps3 to recognize medialink... i've read through a lot of forums and have tried everything. the ps3 is connected to the same network that my imac (leopard) is on, my firewall is off, and file sharing is on... any ideas? thanks. Johnny

How are you connecting the two? Wired or Wireless? Via a router? Is the router firewall configured correctly? Is the router UPNP compatible?

Its connected through wireless through a router. i'm not sure how to configure the router firewall settings. i do know that it is compatible with upnp.

May be your routers' firewall thats blocking communications between your Mac and PS3. What router is it? You can access the routers web interface by typing its address in Safari. It will be something like http://192.168.2.1/

Something is weird. Yesterday I could only watch photos, no video. Today I can only watch video and no photos show up.
I haven´t been able to play music through iTunes either.
Still seems better than Eyeconnect though.
What do I do wrong you think?

Have you enabled the media center functionality from the settings menu on the PS3?

I'm guessing its just buggy still. Hopefully new updates will boost the reliability!

I should think (and hope) so.
It´s only $20 so I think I´ll get it and hope for the best. It was great looking at pictures on my 42" TV last night

Sounds like you might be doing what i was doing wrong when i first used this, what you have to realise is even though the medialink icon on the PS3 gets you to *all* your content from each section of the XMB, you still have to be in the right area on the PS3's XMB for that type of content to work.

For example, Podcasts won't be found if you went into MediaLink icon on the PS3 through the Pictures menu option.. It searches for and will only show specific file types in each section, Pictures, Music and Movies..

I found it easy to get lost and wonder why none of my photos were showing up when i forgot i was in the Music XMB section!

Can someone try an assortment of video podcasts

I am very much leaning toward getting a PS3 (over the updated apple tv), but I am concerned about the medialink's support for streaming the .mov container of h.264 video to the PS3. I was under the impression that the ps3 does not support the .mov container. But, when I watched a youtube video of medialink's functionality I distinctly recall seeing the PS3 (w medialink) playing the Macbreak video podcast in h.264. This podcast is distributed in h.264 within a .mov container. So, do .mov h.264 videos work with the PS3 and medialink? Can someone try an assortment of video podcasts (Diggnation HD quicktime, Macbreak (Apple TV) edition, etc, and report back on the results.

Thanks,
Patrick

This interest me too, why won't an Apple TV Handbrake rip work but h.264 other stuff work? Excuse basic language, I've a fairly rudimentary knowledge on codecs and packages etc.

I will defo plump down the tenner (UK £) if there is a fix in the works for adding that support, dunno if that's Sony though...

?

I just downloaded the Medialink to try it. The photos show up fine but when I went to iTunes "no track" shows whenever I make a selection. I have turned on sharing in iTunes, all of the play lists show up but no tracks. Anyone have a solution? BTW, I have iTunes 7.6 installed.

When I originally installed MediaLink it kept saying that ports 9385 and 9386 were in use. I found out EyeConnect was using them, so I removed all the files relating to EyeConnect that I could find. There is one .plist that seems to keep regenerating though under Macintosh/Library/Preferences that seems to keep screwing everything up. Every time I boot up my Mac I have to go to the Activity Monitor and quit two different processes (I've highlighted them in the picture I have below).

If anybody knows how to fix this is would greatly be appreciated.

mfacey - Maybe you can help with this. When I turn Media center functionality on, it kills my wireless internet connection. So I basically see MediaLink pop up on my PS3 for about 5 seconds and then its gone - look at my mac and the wireless internet connection is off and I cannot reconnect until I turn the Media center functionality off.

Nothing is ever easy! I am running a Linksys wrt54g. Thanks for any input someone has!

Sounds like some kind of conflict going on there. I take it your wireless connection works fine in all other cases?
I'm running my PS3 through an ethernet connection to the router so I'm afraid I can't help you much there. Have you tried using the ethernet port for your network connection?
Also, have you tried enabling media center functionality WITHOUT medialink being activated on your mac?

If you can't get it to work yourself you should get on the phone with Sony support to get it sorted out.

I did a little more research and found out that the problem is the router. The Linksys wrt54g has some sort of conflict with the PS3 when media sharing is turned on. It appears that neither Sony or Linksys have a true fix. Some have tried changing the firmware on the router to dd-wrt, changing some detailed settings that are way confusing, but these are fixes that do not work for all. Seems like buying a new router is the most easy thing for me to do.

I have a linksys wrt54g ver 6 and I'm running DD-WRT v23 SP2 (09/15/06) micro. Also running Leopard 10.5.1 and eyeconnect 151 trial.

I didn't do anything to my router settings to get this to work. I have media server enabled in the xmb. My PS3 doesn't have any troubles seeing or connecting to the media server. I have used null rivers medialink and eyeconnect. It also see Azureus although it doesn't seem to work real well with that. I believe that is a design issue with Azureus. I have uPNP enabled in my router thus the PS3 automatically sets it firewall settings. I DO NOT have apples firewall running. I do not have any problems with wireless settings on the PS3 AND I'm running a hidden SSID which the PS3 connects to just fine. As a matter of fact the ONLY issue I seem to have right now is streaming HD content over wireless. It seems to be kinda jerky which would make sense since it's kind of high bandwidth. I have not tried it using a wired connecting to the PS3.

If you are running wireless, maybe the signal isnt good enough. With dd-wrt firmware on my router, I am able to go in and adjust the signal of the wirelss, maybe that has helped me some. I did do some adjusting to it but NOT for eyeconnect or any other media streaming app. I only played with that setting to see if I could get a better signal to another laptop.

I am a bit confused though. Just to clarify, does your MACs wireless die or just the PS3s? Are you turning mediaserver off on the PS3 or on your mac via medialink or eyeconnect?

If I understand correctly, your MACs wireless is dying. In that case, I can't imagine this has ANYTHING to do with the PS3 OR your media server software on your mac. Coincidental, yes! I do from time to time have issues with my router losing an internet connection for some reason and I have to reboot it. Maybe this is what's happening to your router, I don't know.

As mentioned, try turning on and off a few times the media server on the PS3 WITHOUT ANY media server apps running on your mac! Just cruise around the net on both machines and see if you maintain connectivity. Then ONE BY ONE, start the media server on the PS3 first...try internet again on both....then start the media server app on your mac.

If AFTER you start the media server on your mac, your macs wireless dies and you lose connectivity to the net, then I would suspect the router at that point. If it's anything like my connectivity issues at times, it's the router.

My router issues my be linked to when I play around with QOS and other settings to optimize my network but I always end up turning those off because I can't seem to get them to work very well with this PIECE OF **** ATT DSL SERVICE I have!

Bottom line is that I am having NO issues streaming data to my PS3 with my WRT54G router. Maybe you have and older revision which DOES have issues. Mine is about 1 year and a half old. If yours is older than mine, then maybe it IS your router.

The reason I'm posting is that I noticed a few spouts about this router and although not the best one in the world, it's doing fine for me and my PS3. You might want to check their site to see if there's a firmware upgrade for your router. below is a link... I'll check back to see if you've made any progress.... Maybe I can help out more. :) Dam...did I just type all that ****??

Still having problems

Read through most of everyone's advice but I'm still having no luck in having either the mac or the ps3 registering each other. All my settings seem to be in order e.g. file sharing, itunes sharing etc on mac on and media centre enabled on ps3. Does this mean something is wrong with my bt homehub wireless router? What a waste of a tenner for medialink!

I am having almost the exact same problem. Are there any specific ports that I need to open on my router? It's a D-Link EBR-2310 wired router.

I have a HomeHub too and it was working sweet as a nut up until a few days ago when i updated leopard, now its all gone dead, they cant see each other at all, i tried it on my macbook pro also running the updated leopard without any luck, im trying to find a solution too, will let you know if my imac shows up which runs tiger when i get home. what a pain it is, i prefer it over connect 360 on my xbox anyday but now its stopped working for no reason other than a leopard update, that is the ONLY thing that has changed. *sob, sob*

FYI just got home and my Powermac showed up no problem and managed to stream a 8GB video file near instantly from my Mac via Wi-Fi to PS3 and then through Wi-Fi back to remote play on my PSP, so none of my problems include:

  • Large files
    Wi-Fi
    OS
    PS3 Software
    HomeHub (UK BT router)

So, not sure why mine kicked out for a few days, but seems to be back again.

Anyway jackcosmo I can safely say its not your homehub, mine is running in its default configuration. try giving it a restart.

Good Luck!

Mine is working well now, I just needed to turn the firewall within Mac OS X off. That seems to be what the problem was, everything is working extremely well now.

re: not working

Hi guys,

had a fiddle around with everything and i've found that once my laptop was connected through a cable to the router the ps3 registered medialink straight away and everything worked just hunky dory. Now if only I could get it to register with my laptop when wireless... perhaps it needs to be at a higher signal strength to register.

"File type not supported"ON Medialink?

Noticing alot of problems with Medialink...heres mine:

Running a macbook with Linksys WRT54G wireless net. Connection to PS3 works, music files show up on the PS3, but when you go to play a song, its says "file type not supported". I thought it said right on their site AAC IS supported. So I burned a CD as MP3 format...again won't play and it gives me some weird string of an error code. The only thing I can do is view photos. I'd like to buy this stuff, but it doesn't work!! Anyone have a fix to this, or am I stuck with waiting for the bugs to get worked out?
