You have to make sure that you are trying to look at music under the Music icon in the XMB, video under Video icon, etc. If that doesn't work I don't really have a good answer, everything is working fine for me:(

This interest me too, why won't an Apple TV Handbrake rip work but h.264 other stuff work? Excuse basic language, I've a fairly rudimentary knowledge on codecs and packages etc.

I will defo plump down the tenner (UK £) if there is a fix in the works for adding that support, dunno if that's Sony though...

Can anyone answer this? I've got 200 handbrake ATV h.264 encoded films and dont really want to re-encode?

Steve

transcoding

I hope they can add transcoding support to MediaLink. I just played around with TVersity (in WinXP in Parallels), and it's not bad, but it doesn't have enough bandwidth to stream my bigger video files (TVersity only has a setting for 100mbps, not Gigabit, which is strange). Anyway, I'd much rather be able to use a native Mac app obviously.

Is there any documentation for the Medialink? I've just downloaded it, and it's installed a System Preference pane, and that's it.

How on earth does it work? There is no help, and nothing on the website?

I agree there isn't much/ any documentation, but then again, I didn't need any, it just started working after I clicked the start button to begin sharing my files. if your network is setup correctly the pref. pane should recognize your ps3 on the network. what have you tried?

Medialink problem

Hi, I am experiencing similar problem - have downloaded Medialink, started it - PS3 is visible in the preference pane and the web connection (wireless) is working for the PS3 as well for the Mac. But I am not able to connect from PS3 to Mac and see the contents of my libraries:/ Could you pls give me any info about how i should set up the network in order to Medialink working properly?

OSX 10.4.11
iLife 08
iTunes 7.6.2

Just got a PS3 and installed MediaLink. Movies, TV Shows and video podcasts from iTunes play fantastically. Photos work too, and the slideshow effect where it looks like someone tossing the snaps onto a slow-moving conveyor is pretty cool.

However, none of my music shows up. I have read (above) that MediaLink has been supporting AAC for a while now, so maybe I'm doing something else wrong...?

has anyone else experienced jerky playback after the latest firmware update?

80% of my mp4s won't play and the ones that do skip every 2-3 seconds.

does anyone know of a solution for this? i've googled nonstop all morning.

Working fine here on all of my files.

I'm interested in buying the app, I'd definitively solve the problem of not being able to share media between PS3+Mac, but I'm noticing that there's tons of complaints about the app being a little bit too sketchy and not very stable, working for some and not others, crappy costumer support... yadda, yadda

In a nutshell... worth or not?

If you download it without registering, you can use it in 30-minute chunks. That's long enough to decide. I've had it for about a month and it's been faultless - excellent streaming, no issues at all.

what kind of files are you streaming? also, what's your connection, wired or wireless? i read that streaming works better if the ps3 is wired. so i'm going to try that this evening. any help would be great since your experiencing no problems. thanks.

Wireless here - streaming from iMac and Macbook via Airport Express. Streaming avi, DivX, mp4. Probably 1/10 files won't be recognised by the PS3 for some reason. Have been playing Apple HD trailers passed-through from .mov to .mp4 (copied to PS3 HDD first, files are too big to stream). I've also streamed VOB files, just for the hell of it!

I think I've lost wireless connection maybe 4 times in three months of daily use, not bad really.

Haven't tried it wired.

my take

I've use media link for 2 months now w/out any hitches. i'm extremely happy with it,

my setup:
07 alu. imac directly connected to linksys wireless-g router, playstation is located directly 1 floor below connected via wireless.

I can stream LOTR return of the king, full 1080p (7gb's) from an external hardrive (firewire to imac) over wireless network seamlessly. when i press play on ps3 there is a 15 sec. pause then the movie plays w/out skips.
the only thing is, it lags a bit when fast searching forward or back, but i feel like this is acceptable.

How do you stream iTunes movies/TV shows? My purchased iTUnes movies and stuff don't show up in my folder when I browse in my PS3?

(maybe this is more of an iTunes question..not sure . I'm new to iTunes and Macs, in general.)

thanks

Hi there. Sorry to say, any Digital Rights Management-enabled (copy-protected) media from iTunes won't play on the PS3. It's a drag, I'm not sure what the best way to handle that is. Even if MediaLink someday supports 'transcoding' for media formats that the PS3 cannot play, it still won't play DRM'd content, since the RIAA would close them down in a second.

I'm on the fence about buying an AppleTV, which would stream the protected content to my home theatre no problem. However, it's fairly useless in Canada, since we have a fraction of the content the USA store has...but that's another discussion thread perhaps! :) Plus, I love having just my PS3 as my media hub.

Same here. It only happens with MP4s and even small ones (1,4 G).
It is quite frustrating actually, as most of my stuff iss mp4.

Any updates on the stuttering issue?

I'm on firmware v2.6 and experiencing stuttering.

:(

alternative software

While I do still have MediaLink running, I have pretty much abandoned it, and now use "PS3 Media Server".

This little beauty is very slick: supports transcoding (for some files at least, depending on how fast your Mac is), easy to install and setup, allows mapping custom file paths, and it's FREE! (Also available for Linux and Windows.)

Only configuring I had to do was put my Mac's IP into the "Force IP of the server" field on the "General" tab, and it's been smooth sailing.

The connection (gigabit wired network) between my Mac and my PS3 is now rock solid, Pause/FF/RW are flawless, thumbnails work, no dropouts, I can't say enough. :D

It even transcodes 1080p Apple Movie Trailers on the fly with no noticeable quality loss, just a 10 second pause before the trailer starts as it builds a buffer. Outstanding. I can't quite seem to transcode MKV's on the fly, but one day at a time. :)

Does PS3 Media Server work directly with iTunes, or does it just scan your mac for the media you have in folders?

Will it stream movies or TV shows you've purchased through iTunes? That's the killer feature in my book. I've already got a PS3, I don't need an AppleTV too. I just want to be able to stream the content THAT I PAID FOR on my Mac to my TV.

I hear ya. No, PS3 Media Server doesn't stream Apple DRM'd files, only AppleTV will do that. Yup, DRM is great stuff. Only punishes the consumer.

Oh, and my MKV's are transcoding on the fly very well now with the newest beta of PS3 Media Server...DTS and everything. A new day has dawned in home entertainment.

I've had medialink for a while now, haven't used it much, it actually didn't work for me the first time I tried it. I do have it working now but I noticed that after I stopped blocking UDP communications, my XP laptop also showed up in "Network".

I heard a sound from medialink, checked, and the XP laptop's IP was showing as an "unsupported device" (which is what the Ps3 was listed as too).

XP showed no indication of a media server, but does anyone know how media servers work? I've got 2 people using our wireless upstairs (they're paying) and they use windows 7. Would they be able to access my media through medialink?
