why stop at $2600?

can't you shove another 480GB stick in there? ... if it doesn't fit inside, maybe just scotch tape it to the bottom? ... or use glue to 'stud' the whole thing in 480GB sticks?

;)

OP, i think it's crazy, but i'm just messing with you. you seem happy, and you seem happy to accept the criticism along with the encouragement. kudos.

i do think its good advice to keep the stock SSD around for the reasons listed.

p.s. did i mention this is COMPLETELY INSANE? g:eek::eek:d.

Also- does it affect performance to have so much loaded on?

fyi, you DO NOT need a billion dollars worth of storage to run windows AND OSX on the Air. many people can get by doing this on 128GB, and certainly the 256GB option ($300) is plenty.

the size of your SSD should not affect performance.

:eek::eek:

your car looks so clean. the insides of my car are just

Yes, more storage and speed. OWC claims that their SSD's are around twice as fast as the stock Apple drives. I just wanted to build a hot one to see what it would do, and it rocks!
Wouldn't be surprised, the Apple SSD's suck, and they also rape you on the apple markup.. when there are 3rd party SSD's that are way better for cheaper with same/more space.

Congrats!

Well, I did a somewhat irrational deed. I am mostly a Windows PC guy but also like some of the Mac products. I saved my money and purchased a 2011 11" MBA, 4GB, i7 and then gues what I did? I purchased the 480GB SSD from OWC ($1399.99 ouch! and double-ouch!) and installed it im my new 11" MBA. This makes a nice, very portable PC that runs all the cool Lion stuff as well as Boot Camp running Windows 7 Professional x64 on a 128 GB partition.

Macs are great for a lot of things but horrible for many others such as GPS programs, printed circuit board design, scientific data and lab software which is all Windows based. Now I think I have the best of both worlds. I'll see how it works out as time goes along. I'm traveling now and running the coolest Windows PC GPS programs such as Garmin Mobile PC, Microsoft Map Point 2011, and Delorme Topo. 11" screen is awesome. So far, so good.

Seems like I know have either a killer MBA or I did something really stupid.

Well, pretty much what I did to 3- 2010 11" MBA refurbs, got them with the 1.8/4/64 flavor and put a 480 GB OWC SSD in each. My Daughter uses hers for her Masters, and my wife and I run our business with ours. Our C2D are wicked fast, your's must be a rocket. Wicked lil Computer!:apple::apple:

Thank you for making apple even richer. Because people like OP, Apple now has more money than US government. Eventually, apple will be able to buy anything in this world.

What is your advice then, steal the laptop? Do you blame Apple for making money?

Small world... you were about a mile from my parents house when you snapped this photo. Great MBA that you built.

how did you get garmin Mobile PC GPS to work on the mba? did you have to purchase any exterior GPS hardware for it?

Damn, I'm jealous. I got the 256 GB SSD and it's already starting to fill up with RAW photos. But that is a lot of money.

Mine's going to get pretty expensive when I add the Thunderbolt Display in a couple months though.

supercool, I "only" ordered the 11" maxed out, (and thats enough for my use) but I really like your setup!
Did you do any benchmarks on the new SSD?

Wow! You really live in the Matrix! Most everything on this list is not "given" or "supplied" by the government. We pay for it. The government collects our money, takes their huge cut, then doles out a few tidbits. Control is the game.

Don't get me started on that one. In the USA you'll pay around 26% of taxes if calculated as a percentages of the GDP. In the Netherlands that is 40%.
I'm a bit above average, so I'll pay up to 57% of taxes....
So you can think you pay a lot of taxes, but it can get a whole lot worse. And by the looks of the government spending and debt rise it is going a whole lot worse.

I could, but I'm not sure what benchmark program to use. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

That's awesome, wish I could pull that off. Either use diskspeedtest or xbench, it'd be great to see some numbers!

Nice MBA! That is the cleanest inside of an FJ i have seen in a while. Mine has to be completely washed out periodically (kids, offloading etc) :)

Is the the full screen Garmin software just to show you can do it? I know a few people that use laptops for Navigation and I never understood why.

I have considered a laptop mount in the FJ but can't come up with enough uses for it. If you are a scientist that travels about, i can totally see it.

Thanks for sharing.

what!?!?

WHAT!?!? Too much money for storage... Never invest much money on storage since the price of storage always goes down sharply.

BTW. spend that much money on storage and make Mac to run windows!?!? I don't get the idea. Based on your situation, I think a well engineered windows laptop is more suitable.....
