Do many members get banned? I saw a thread yesterday called What you HATE about Macs (or something) and the guy who started it has been banned. I assume for starting the thread that looks at the bad things about Macs.

I've noticed these forums are quite militant and people's innocent comments get edited and deleted. I remember recently one of the moderators edited someone's post for quoting all of the previous post (which wasn't exactly long).

And there's also moderators closing posts within seconds with a rather rude "Already covered, search next time" or something similar.

I wouldn't make assumptions about why someone gets banned, there could be a lot of other factors involved.

The mods do a great job of keeping the place cleaned up for many reasons. While it may look arbitrary to you, it usually is done with due diligence and collaboration. Yes, this place is run more tightly than other forums, but that is also one reason why it is the BEST forum.

The "short, terse" responses and closing of threads is often due to the plethora of such threads. We are all human, and remember, there is no tone in the written word.

Just my thoughts.

I for one am glad that the mods close the duplicate threads down. This place is huge and full of so much helpful information. It would be extremely difficult to find things if all the clutter were left out there.

And surely, no one expects the mods to write detailed comments on everything they do; that would be ridiculous.:)

That's a poor assumption. Banning someone because of such an opinion would be quite the censorship and is not the type of action our Mods here engage in. Members who are banned are banned for legitimate reasons, the circumstances of which are usually only known between the Mods and the member.

It's all part of maintaining a well-run, clean Forum. Single-word posts, emoticon replies or "me too" type of posts do not add any value to a thread, and thus are usually deleted. Other techniques such as removing large quoted items, whether they be text or images, help keep things succinct and efficient as well.

Speaking as a member, I appreciate not having to read through tons of crap while perusing a thread.

You are confusing rude with mater-of-fact and to-the-point. The Mods here are extremely busy and do not have time to type up detailed explanations on why they have made certain edits. You're obviously taking things too personally if you're offended by such succinct statements. ;)

And once again, it's about keeping the Forums clean. There are many topics which have been discussed multiple times here on MacRumors and members here should really get in the habit of performing a search before asking questions - it saves them time as well as members who end up reading/replying to the same old thread - no need to reinvent the wheel. ;)

~Shard~ is spot on. Nice post BTW. :)

adversecamber, it's all about respect. You can disagree and argue all you want, but it must be while respecting the other individual.

Heck, MR is full of threads where members, old and new, disagreed with each other yet neither was banned. So as long as the discourse it polite and respectful, there should be no problem.

And yes, there are issues with Apple products ... unfortunately.

If people got banned for that, then I'm sure the moderators would have made their personal way to me and (----------censored-----------) a long time ago :p

Some mods are probably neat freaks which causes their fingers to itch to concatenate posts. I can name names, but I'm not gonna :D But there's also the valid premise that being able to do certain things on this forum rests to an extent on your post count, which must cause problems for the moderators.

Absolutely not. It takes a very serious breach of the Forum Rules to get yourself banned. The reason for a banning is a private matter, and as such the details are never disclosed to the public, but it's usually safe to assume that the offending posts were already deleted, which can unfortunately leave the public with the false impression that the offender didn't do anything wrong.

Posts are edited/deleted for one reason and one reason only: breaking the Forum Rules.

EDIT: I didn't realize there was another page. Oops!

OP, Why don't you do something beneficial to yours and others lives.. Why not create something or do something, your just a Voyeur to an internet forum, I'm sure you could do something positive for some old folks near you?

And what are you doing here in a forum ranting about someone using a forum?

Pot, meet Kettle.

I can name names too and since I don't care about being banned or not I may just do so if I'm pushed to. :D

For some reason, one mod came to mind when I read this.

One? I can think of a few more than that. Some of the mods here IMO have no reason to be and never should have been appointed as such.

I disagree. There is a such thing as overzealously interpreting the forum rules when it suits your interests.

Ahhhh... The veiled scab-peeling, the hidden dramas and tribulations, the raging Aspergers, the possibly post-lobotomies and the outright insanity...

I have to say there are many times over the last two years, probably more on this forum than any other I've been to, where I can be looking at the screen, grinning widely with a "You've got to be kidding me" moment. Many's the time I've had to fight my "poke it with a stick" instincts.

No wonder I keep coming back.

I can't speak for the others, but I concatenate yours just so I don't have to see your name as often. ;)

For the most part, posts that are edited are done so as the result of post reports. We don't normally seek them out to edit, because that cuts into the time we have to spend the mad funds we get for moderating. This post alone caused over $100 (£2) worth of interest to build up, and I like to keep my account in the low 8 figures. So, anyway, off to buy some more ankle cream.

Hey, we have to have our fun. We usually pick on the skinny kids and the ones with braces.

Does anyone remember that person who wanted to put a G5 processor in his iBook G4? His name was nazmac or something like that. IIRC, he was banned not for his idiotic thread, but because he posted somewhere that he was 12.

With so many comments on your post so far, I find it funny that you've been banned within the past 18 hours of making your post. :p

Though perhaps not "colorful" enough a character - I miss zimv20. Take with a grain of salt, as this comes from a primarily PRSI member...

Indeed. What an ironic last post!
Interesting.

I enjoyed reading his posts in the past on PRSI forum.

Checking his user profile, I see that he still posts once in a while in various areas on MR.
