without a doubt the 38mm. The 42 looks way too large. It probably looks smaller in real life b.c you tilt the watch to your face when you look at it. To you it looks small, but to others it looks "right"

What about this video? He has 42mm and wrist about the same as i do...do you think that watch on his wrist looks too large, or does the sport band looks larger then milanese/leather band..?

I think it definitely looks too large. It screams smart watch. That video would push me to the 38mm if my wrist were the same size as his. Mine are not much larger (165mm), and I will get the 38mm as well.

I spoke with him by Twitter and he has 165mm wrist...;)
So now you know- look of 42 would be like his video:)

If you have an iPhone 6 get 38mm. If you have an iPhone 6 Plus get 42mm. The folks who got used to a "big" phone will get used to a "big" watch while 6 owners will be fine with their smaller watch to go along with their smaller phone.

Thx for the video and details.

At 170 myself I seem to be just in between. But I don't like big watches and for all the size, i'm concerned about the thickness.

Will go for the 38

still not sure about the video about Pharrell Williams wearing a smart watch. I really like his size of the watch - and and think he has also small wrist ... but some people are saying that he has 38mm and some 42....
your opinion?

so hard to tell without knowing his wrist size. That is how the 42mm would look on some, and that is how the 38mm would look on others. Maybe tweet him and see if you get a response. "what is your wrist size and what size apple watch do you have."

in the Verge video you can tell that is the 42mm b.c that guy has massive wrist.

According to the golden ratio I should get 38mm...it might be game time decision. Do I go more logical choice, 38mm...or what I'm hoping will work 42mm

I've layed a cutout of the 42mm on my original pebble and think it looks just fine. I wear my original pebble day to day and it looks just fine on my 165mm wrists. The 42mm is just a tad bit bigger if I'm not including the lugs on the pebble.

It's the same for me too. My wrist size is approximately 165mm and I currently have the original Pebble which to me looks just fine on my wrist. I'm definitely going with the 42mm model. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of people currently looking at getting the 38mm will either change their minds and switch to the 42mm or regret their decision. Too many people are getting hung up on the size and too many think that large watches are out of fashion or look weird. I'm confident the 42mm will be the right choice for me.

Thanks. That's great to know. It's a like for like comparison for me as I have 165mm wrists and I'm getting the 42mm model. It only goes to strengthen the fact that 42mm will look just fine.

Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if its the other way around. When people are doing these cutouts, they're forgetting that the watch is over 10mm thick and will inevitably look bigger than the cutout as it will be elevated off the wrist.

Thanks for the video, it is a good one for me to make up my decision. I have 177mm wrist, and i am getting a Milanese loop. But in this video for a 165mm, it loops all the way around, i am not sure if I like it. Now i am leaning towards 38mm now, i don't want to see magnetic clasp on the other side, ideally it should be below the wrist.

My wrist is about 63.5mm wide so it's telling me 39.24mm for watch diameter. My wrist is 165mm around. I've been saying the whole time I'm getting the 42mm but according to the golden ratio I should probably get 38mm.

Yeah in the same boat. Having a harder time deciding than I thought I would.

I'm probably still going to pre-order both sizes then try them on this Friday and decide. Apple really should have starting fittings a week or two before pre-order!

I don't agree as I don't think the thickness will be an issue either. I still maintain the difference in size negligible in relation to wrist size. I also think it doesn't matter and the only thing it should come down is personal taste and preference.

Great post! Finally there's a scientific reason backing up why I prefer a watch that looks "right" on the wrist rather than dominating it's width.

Hah, please, I would never imply this is some kind of scientifically based thing. Many people just like the golden ratio for stuff like this, is all, my self included. It's just a visual guide, like the "rule of thirds" for photography.

Still, I do think it works fairly well. And as a bonus, if you want an intentionally oversized watch, you can be sure you're getting that if you ignore the guide and go bigger :)

But, ultimately, it's still a subjective guide.

Of course, but it helped me a lot. Turns out my wrists are narrower but thicker than most. My wrist is 180mm which is above average, but only 60mm wide, which using the golden ratio, recommends a 37mm watch size.

at the end - apple watch is still a smart watch - and i think - in my opinion - it should be larger than usual watch right?
if you compare all the smartwatches on market - also 42mm is the smallest of them...
