Just thought I'd add my latest photo wearing both sizes. My wife finally relented and spent time helping me decide what suited me best, and she quickly decided that the 38mm was too small, "100% you should get the 42mm", which sort of settles it for me! (my wrists are 174mm).

I agree with your wife.

Don't print from the browser, and measure once you've printed just to make sure the scaling is correct (print at 100%). Also mount the printouts on multiple layers of cardboard or equivalent (try to get as close to 1cm thickness as possible), to give a realistic impression.
Thank you for this. Printed and fastened to 10.5mm thick cardboard backs; think I'm finally fully confident in the 38mm watch for my 170mm wrists. The 42mm watch body is the width of my entire wrist, which is just too large.

ok I really want to get the 42mm coz it might seem that the 38mm is "girl ish" but I have a small wrist 162mm...so do you guys think that I should really get the 38mm?

My wrists are slightly smaller at 154 mm, but the way I look at it is a big watch would look weird on my wrists but the 38mm will make my wrists look normal :)

If the 42mm watch body goes edge to edge on my 170mm wrist, you're going to want the 38mm.

When you are stuck in deciding between the 38mm and 42mm and comparing cut-outs, remember that the height has a lot of impact on size perception with watches. A 42mm Apple Watch will be significantly larger in real life because of the total volume increase. So put a real watch underneath your cut-outs to get a better sense of depth.

One thing I've learnt in the watch world is to never buy a watch you haven't had on your wrist! In real life on your wrist, with your wrist size, with your skin tone, a watch that looks great on pictures can look bad in person or the other way around. Ordering of the internet will leave many people disappointed I'm afraid. Especially the people who already have difficulty deciding between these two sizes.

believe it or not, the analog watch i'm wearing right now is probably the same thickness but wider than the 42mm  watch (compared my current watch to the actual size on the apple store iOS app).

33% of men in this thread are getting the 38mm. This is sight unseen. I think quite a few will switch to the 38mm once they realize how it looks in real life. So many people doing cutouts are ignoring the thickness like others said.

180mm wrists and I'm going with the 38mm. The 42mm would fit, but I think it looks kind of dorky. Both watches are already too thick, I don't want it to bring even more attention to itself.

I'm not a big guy, 5'7(1/2?)", and I was sure my wrists were small. Turns out they're just over 173mm; not huge, sure, but I thought they'd be smaller. I was positive I was going to get a 38 but now I'm almost certain I will be ordering the 42 version.

I think what most people don't realize is that there is a fairly wide spectrum of wrist sizes that can accommodate both version without it looking tacky. I think what it will come down to for most people is personal preference rather than any physical considerations.

That is really what matters. If you like a small watch, get the 38mm. If you like a big watch, get the 42mm.

Men: 38mm or 42mm

I've layed a cutout of the 42mm on my original pebble and think it looks just fine. I wear my original pebble day to day and it looks just fine on my 165mm wrists. The 42mm is just a tad bit bigger if I'm not including the lugs on the pebble.

I have the original pebble as well. My biggest concern with 42mm is the width. It is as wide as the pebble is when you include the buttons on both sides. That is just the body, the digital crown stick out a little further. Look at your pebble and imagine the buttons on both sides extending the length of the watch and add a little more.

I have a 165mm wrist. I wore a pebble steel for a week and it felt like a pretty small watch on my wrist. I would highly recommend you guys go into best buy and try on some of these smart watches, you'll then realize how much smaller both sizes of Apple watch are.

FYI: pebble steel 46mm x 34mm x 10.5mm
Apple watch 42mm x 35.9mm x 10.5mm

I think it will be ok. I originally pre-ordered the pebble time which would have been 40.5mm L × 37.5mm W × 10.5mm, a bit larger than the 42mm apple watch and I wouldnt have had a choice. The original pebble is a also listed on the pebble website as having about the same width as the apple watch. So, I imagine that apple doesnt include that or the sensor on the bottom of the watch into their listed dimensions.

good point. If I didn't have the original pebble, I think the decision would be easier. Since I do have a pebble and I wear it pretty much all the time, I have gotten use to the size. It definitely stretches the width of my wrist though and screams smart watch.

It just depends on personal choice. Do you go for a regular watch, 38mm, or do you go for a smart watch, 42mm. I'm leaning/ probably will get the smart watch.
