I've had a hard time with the 38. I love the size of the watch, I didn't want a big watch. But I've had a problem with the bands seeming too skinny for me. I bought the watch with the black classic buckle, I like the strap, but not on me. Then I bought a black sport band, big improvement as its a bit wider. It's also very comfortable. Today I received a link band, I really like it. It's even wider than the sport band and much more chunky!

Not saying it doesn't look decent but the link band is just so expensive. It's not proportionally better relative to the price difference IMO.

Oh, mine is the Hoco link band from Amazon ($40) with lugs! And the lugs come apart with a Philips head screwdriver so you can put any band on them. I would never spend the $450 for the Apple link band.

Edit: I'm going to add that into my original post now!

Here's my 38mm silver sport with BSB. I love this watch!

After reading this thread, I went with a 38mm for my 16 cm wrist. I was a type B wrist on the credit card test. I'm definitely glad I went with the 38mm as I'm sure the other would appear ungainly.

6.5inch wrist here and went with a 38mm - not sure if it is too small but i think the 42mm would be too big for sure.

Purchased online before trying on so will probably just keep the 38mm.

I just bought the 42 mm. I usually wear big watches ( diesel daddy watches ) so I went for that. Looks decent on my wrist. I feel the 38 would have been to small imo

I mean, is it bigger really better for something you have stuck to your wrist all day?

...both watches are just perfectly usable and navigable, there is no problem whatsoever with the smaller screen. Checking notifications, sending messages, doing workouts, etc, are things that don't really require any additional real estate...

Excellent analysis.

There's too much focus on appearance (which we all know is subjective, with no right answer) and not enough on functionality and practicality.

Guys, I'm having a really tough time deciding between the 38mm and the 42mm. I have fairly skinny, 165mm wrists. My wife already has the 38mm Sport, and while I think it fits nice, it felt it may be a tad too small. So I've ordered a 42mm, but I'm now worried I'll wait 5 weeks for it and decide it's too big - then have to wait another 2 for it to be swapped.

I've attached a pic of me wearing the 38mm alongside a Moto 360. I wore the 360 about three times because it was just huge, and it felt uncomfortable and embarrassing on me. I'm worried the 42mm Watch will feel the same — even though it's still smaller than the 360.

So, my question is, does the 38mm look too small, or can I pull it off with my skinny wrists? I'd rather a watch that looks like a watch rather than a gadget strapped to my wrist.

Here's another pic of the 38mm on me without the Moto 360.

38mm is perfect for you in my opinion. you said it yourself you want it to look like a watch and not a gadget - 42mm screams gadget. 38mm blends in more.

The 38 looks great on you and in my opinion the 360 looks hideous!

I kept my 38 mm SS for 2 weeks and really though it looked great. I have 165 mm wrists. But I always wanted the text to be bigger for easier viewing and found the battery life was not ideal if I use the exercise app for over an hour. Now I have a 42 mm on order and it should arrive by Tuesday. I think it will be better for my purposes. I think the 38 mm may be a little less likely to damage since it's physically smaller but that's why I have AppleCare plus.

Just so you know there are settings for text size and bold as well that may help with readability. Just wanted to mention it in case you weren't aware I have 165 mm as well and you could probably go either way I think both sizes can look good.

Im testing both sizes since three weeks now on my 150mm wrists.
Still undecided.
The 42 is a little too big and the 38 a little too small. Most annoying is the fact that on the 42mm the milanese band is maybe 5mm too long.
Classic leather is fine. Sport bands look bad.
As you have 165mm wrists, the size should be very perfect for you.

Yes good point - I tried changing those settings but still felt like I would benefit from a bigger screen to be able to also read more text before having to scroll. I really like the 38 mm size because when you are not using it you almost don't realize you are wearing it. It's very unobtrusive while exercising. I think the 42 mm won't be much different though. I hope

Thanks - I think either size will work for me too. I always like smaller watches and wanted to keep the 38 mm but realized I would benefit from a larger screen. I am glad Apple has a good return policy.

The bigger screen is really much bigger.
You maybe think that the 4mm are not a big difference but it is.

Cool just wanted to mention it in case. I don't think it will be much different comfort wise, when I was doing try on appointments I made sure I was wearing long sleeves and it didn't seem to catch any more than the 38. Cuffs that tended to catch on one watch like tended to catch on both etc. When I first got the watch I was kind of worried it would catch on things but it's been great just slips under most cuffs no problem and I hardly notice I'm wearing it. I haven't been wearing watches for a few years and was amazed how fast I forgot I was wearing it. I really think Apple did a great job with the sizes weight and bands on these.

I was on the fence with my SS 38mm. I liked it a lot but thought I would prefer the larger screen and font sizes on the 42mm so I returned my 38mm Watch. I just got the SS 42mm Watch and could not be happier. It really does not feel any bigger on my (165mm) wrist but the screen is much easier to read. Even typing in the password is much easier and I think I will enjoy the battery which supposedly is bigger in the 42mm. I would say I think the 38mm looks better when the screen is off (it is a smaller slab of black glass and looks less like a smartwatch which is a good thing) but I definitely prefer the 42mm overall. But its not for everyone and I am glad we have choices.
