Math?

Maybe I'm confused, but wouldn't it be cheaper to buy the box set now for $129 instead of having bought Leopard for $129 and now buying the Snow Leopard upgrade for $29? Correct me if I'm wrong!

The box set is $169. It would only be $11 more to go with the box set.

What are you smoking?

If I upgraded to Leopard from Tiger back in 2007, it would have cost me $129. If I had chosen not to, and waited until Snow Leopard, it will cost me $169 (Snow Leopard Box Set). If Apple charged $29 to Tiger users, it would not be fair to all those who bought Leopard.

Apple has to charge you the regular price.

It will look for Lepoard first, then you will be able to choose to do a fresh install if you want, it will either A)Upgrade, B)archive and install or C)erase and install, windows has been doing this since XP. Why is this hard to understand. You just need to put the DVD in on your leopard machine and follow the steps, just don't choose upgrade people. Follow the instructions....

But if you want to re-format and do a fresh install ... ?

Back in Jaguar (10.2), I believe during the install it asked you to insert a 10.1 disc to do it. After it verified you had a 10.1 disc, it prompted you to put the 10.2 disc back in the drive and the install continued.

Then you'll start off with the Leopard disc and move on to the Snow Leopard install.

I bet you can boot from 10.6 and it will prompt you for the 10.5 DVD to verify you have it, as in my example above.

Which is what I meant… hmm. Must have been unclear. ;) Apple really only want to check that it is a bona fide upgrade.
Hopefully it'll be painless. Not like my Windows Vista upgrade from XP… *sigh*

So you'll need to install Leopard first, before 'upgrading' to SL ?

EDIT - belvdr, I hope you're right! Doing two sounds kinda crappy to me.

No. I didn't say you have to install it first, just you need a Leopard disc to verify that it is an upgrade.
You place it in the drive, it reads the original and after a few seconds spits it out and asks for the Snow Leopard upgrade.

Then you'll start off with the Leopard disc and move on to the Snow Leopard install.

No need to.

The Leopard drop-in DVD also checked for Tiger (or Leopard) before you could start the install process.

Once it had verified the correct OS was present, you had exactly the same options as with the retail DVD. You can upgrade, archive and install or clean install exactly the same.

The only time you would need to install the previous OS is if you fit a new hard drive.

I'm hoping the installer checks for a leopard install otherwise I'm stuck.

So Snow Leopard is out soon.
With no upgrade option for Tiger users other than the Mac Box Set for $129 (uk price ~£129?).

Tiger users are being penalised for not upgrading to Leopard when it came out and being able to upgrade to Snow Leopard for just $29 (£25).

What if I don't want or need iLife/iWork? Maybe I want to upgrade to iLife/iWork '10 next year?

I just want to buy Snow Leopard standalone, plain and simple. I really hope Apple come out with this soon.

How do you figure you are being punished? Nobody was forcing you to upgrade. You didn't upgrade, you chose not to upgrade. So now if you want to upgrade you will pay the price that a good majority of us have had to pay. How is this punishing you? You think you should get a skate by on the upgrade from tiger to snow leopard? Really?

Even after a hard drive reformat? Which was, presumably, the question I answered…
;)

Yeah the OP said $129 so I assumed they had lowered the price.

The $169 price would be a lot more compelling if there were a new iLife and iWork also -- I guess if I were in that position, I would think about waiting to see if there are 2010 versions of the suites and a new box set. $169 for an upgrade of all three, after all, is a really good deal.

I wonder how large the installed base of individuals with Intel processor Macs and Tiger is, anyway....

i really dont understand where people get this. i really dont

WHERE does it say it LOOKS for a leopard install before installing snow leopard?!!!?!??

i know, to get the $29 price you to have leopard, but looking for an install of leopard completely rules out the reformat and install, which many uses will choose to do.

i dont think apple has ever/will ever make more than one version of an install disk (apart from 10.x.x updates). The disc you buy has always given a full install regardless of what OS your running

Ive edited my OP to the correct price of $169. (I'm in England , prices for UK box set arent out yet, correct me if im wrong.)

Firstly, Im not suggesting that Tiger users pay $29 to upgrade to Snow Leopard.

Theres probably a lot of Intel Tiger users who want to upgrade. So why doesn't Apple price Snow Leopard at $129 or for example $99, for those people who don't want/need iWork/iLife.

A standalone version of Snow Leopard is all I'm asking for at a reasonable price.

No, it doesn't. Re-read the posts above. Let's say you have a new hard drive, if you pop in an upgrade disc, the installer will prompt for the previous OS version DVD.
