No, it doesn't. Re-read the posts above. Let's say you have a new hard drive, if you pop in an upgrade disc, the installer will prompt for the previous OS version DVD.

ignoring the posts above, which give no proof whatsoever (of SL), how do you know this.

an apple rep said i could erase my hard drive and the up-to-date disc would work

Ive edited my OP to the correct price of $169. (I'm in England , prices for UK box set arent out yet, correct me if im wrong.)

Firstly, Im not suggesting that Tiger users pay $29 to upgrade to Snow Leopard.

Theres probably a lot of Intel Tiger users who want to upgrade. So why doesn't Apple price Snow Leopard at $129 or for example $99, for those people who don't want/need iWork/iLife.

A standalone version of Snow Leopard is all I'm asking for at a reasonable price.

I thought the same thing as you, but after digging a little more, I found that you can buy 10.5 Leopard for $93 at Amazon. Adding $29 for the SL upgrade, you're looking at $122 ... which is $7 cheaper than previous OS X upgrades.

I'm sure you could probably score a copy of 10.5 for less than $93 on eBay ... so the cost of SL-only would be less.

Sure, it's a potential PITA if you have to install Leopard prior to installing SL. Perhaps the installer on the SL-upgrade disk will allow you to install SL on top of Tiger/Panther/etc if you just pop the Leopard DVD in the drive to verify ownership.

Because it has been this way (that I know of) since 10.2's upgrade disc that came with my new iMac.

If you're looking for definitive proof, rather than prior history which Apple seems to be consistent with, wait until you get your disc.

I am glad that we can have this debate for the fourth different time. You are going to either need Leopard installed, or you pray that the disc method can work. But, there is obviously no conclusiveness given that none of us have had any experience with installing Snow Leopard from a box.

Quite true, but you can't expect anyone to wait four whole days to find out the real answer. ;)

I just called apple. They said the $29 disk is for upgrading only. It will not allow you to wipe the drive and install.

he further said that if you want to wipe your drive in the future, you will have to use the Leapord disk that came with your mac, then use the upgrade disk again.

If you want the full install and wipe capability, you will need to buy the box set.

Straight from their mouth.

Tiger users are being penalised for not upgrading to Leopard when it came out and being able to upgrade to Snow Leopard for just $29 (£25).

Penalized? You don't get to make the jump to a full Leopard set up for the discounted price of only $29. That would be crazy.

And as for the boxed set software. There is some good stuff in there! It might come in handy when you least expect it. Pages is especially good.

We've had loads of bum advice posted on here in the past supposedly from Apple representatives. Let's wait and see before we all panic about it. :)

Agreed, i called a 2nd time to a different rep. Same thing was told to me.

It would be even better if other forum members called and asked the same question.

Regardless, im letting others buy the $29 upgrade disk and waiting to see what they say.

You should be able to upgrade to Leopard buying a regular disk off of craigslist for significantly less money. Also, it's not a huge punishment like it has been sad above. I have a couple of other random thoughts:
I. The majority of users that have an Intel machine already have Leopard
EDIT: II. Why upgrade now? I mean it is really not logical?
III. The better argument would be Apple not being friendly to its PowerPC Users

GG Apple. Off to Pirate Bay~

Yes. The other note is that for the most part Apple reps do not answer questions besides specs and order processes before products are released.

Pays to shop around.

So Snow Leopard is out soon.
With no upgrade option for Tiger users other than the Mac Box Set for $169 (uk price ~£129?).
What if I don't want or need iLife/iWork? Maybe I want to upgrade to iLife/iWork '10 next year?

For example in the UK, you can buy Leopard from Amazon right now for £68.99.
Add to that Snow Leopard for £25.

Total upgrade: £93.99… (Free shipping on all)
Certainly cheaper than the Upgrade Mac Box Set of £129.
But you'd miss out on the iLife etcetera, which you say you don't want.

You are only being "ripped off" if you allow it. ;)

But I fail to see why you would want a cheap direct upgrade route from Tiger to Snow Leopard. Then Apple would be "punishing" the rest of us Leopard users. :D

Normally I would agree, but the rep was so mater of fact about it. As if they have been trained to answer that question.

Whats waiting 4 more days anyway.

WHY WOULD YOU WIPE THE DRIVE FIRST TO INSTALL OS 10.6? Just let the Disc under 10.5 wipe the drive than let it automatically install a fresh copy of OS 10.6? Has everyone in this thread/website never loaded a OS before? This is 1st grade PC stuff people.

If you choose to install on a blank drive it will ask for 10.5 disc, load nothing, then tell you to re insert the 10.6 disc once it reads a file on the 10.5 disc and Voila you will have a fresh copy of 10.6. If you have no 10.5 disc, you are out of luck, buy the other disk. I mean since you have to have a INtel Mac for SL anyway, those came with 10.5 from the beginning. You have a disc!

That is way too logical. Go back to your cave and stop suggesting helpful things to paranoid people.

I suppose that I should add something to show that that was meant in all fun.

Am I wrong, or isn't a clean install now an option in Disc Utility within the Snow Leopard installer?

Except for the fact his information isn't very accurate. :D

The first Intel Macs were released in January 2006.

Leopard was released in October 2007.

Just because you've got an Intel Mac, it doesn't mean you've got 10.5. :p

I didnt read all upteenhundred posts before this. Did someone specificly say wipe before loading? I was being more specific that the rep said the upgrade disk wont let you do a fresh install wipe. Just upgrade only.

I really dont think the swap to verify the other disk will be it either. If you want to start from scratch you will have to load the 10.5 OS, then stick in the SL disk afterwards..

Just my opinion. We will know in 4 days... Friendly wager? :)
