not informative talk with an apple expert

You are chatting with Michelle H, an Apple Expert
Hi, my name is Michelle H. Welcome to Apple!
HI, welcome back,
Hello.
How may I help you today?
I'm considering to preorder snow leopard upgrade kit.
I have a question regarding its feature.
Great.
ASk away.
Okay. I have a macbook pro with leopard installed.
suppose i bought $29 snow leopard upgrade kit.
Right...
can i boot with installation dvd
and
erase the hard drive
and install snow leopard from scratch?
Yes you can, you would do a clean install.
are you sure about that?
some other reps are saying differently
Yes I am.
You can do a clean install or keep current settings.
okay then
thank you
You're welcome.
Can I ask one more thing?
Of course!
If I purchase a new hard drive,
should I install leopard first
to get snow leopard installed ?
Are you installing the drive internally?
yes i am
Okay, you will need to call AppleCare for that advise then.
The number for AppleCare is 1-800-275-2273.
okay
thank toy
you
You're welcome.

Just got on the apple chat, and was informed that both the upgrade and up-to-date media will require leopard to be installed before installing Snow Leopard. Although looking back at some Leopard stuff, you should be able to modify the disk image to not require the upgrade check.

Hi, my name is Amanda R. Welcome to Apple!
Amanda R: Good evening.
Amanda R: How may I assist you today?
You: Hi, I just had a quick question about the snow leopard upgrade
Amanda R: I will be happy to assist you.
You: I was going to be replacing the hard drive in my mac this weekend, and was wondering if I would need to install leopard before installing snow leopard
Amanda R: Do you currently have the intel processor?
You: yes, the computer is a macbook pro purchased new back in january
Amanda R: Yes, you would need to have Leopard installed prior to installing Snow Leopard.
You: really, i also have a friend in the same situation who is elgible for the up-to-date program
You: will he have to have leopard installed before using the up-to-date snow leopard disk?
Amanda R: Which operating system does he currently have installed?
You: leopard, he just got the computer a week ago
Amanda R: Yes, Leopard must be installed.
You: alright, thanks for the info
Amanda R: When you install Snow Leopard it searches for the Leopard operating system.
Amanda R: If it is not detected then Snow Leopard will not install.

Again and again, people keep posting these chats. We'll find out the truth when everyone receives their media kit.

It's $40 for both iWork and iLife 09. That's like getting iWork for half price and iLife for free. You could always buy the box set and sell both iWork and iLife.

Maybe I'm confused, but wouldn't it be cheaper to buy the box set now for $129 instead of having bought Leopard for $129 and now buying the Snow Leopard upgrade for $29? Correct me if I'm wrong!

Yup. Seems like some people fail math and other things. =p

Snow Leopard Upgrade Only? Thought there was a standalone option?

I dont want the 25$ option to upgrade only, its a pain in the ass.

I want to be able to wipe my hard drives, write zeros, or get new SSDs etc and want a clean install of just snow leopard.

Do I need the Box Set? (10.6/iLife/iWork) to accomplish this?

Thx

You should be able to erase and install from the upgrade disc. Upgrade just means you need to have Leopard installed first.

or you could do what I plan on doing which is "borrow" a friends or family members restore CDs to use when you have to verify that you have leopard (if thats how it works idk dont take my word on it)

And if that doesn't work?

Im just going to wait for iLife and iWork '10 to be in the box set. By then we will probably see 10.6.2 and a lot of the initial bugs will be squashed. Plus, i'd need a full install copy for my Hac, so upgrading isnt going to work. :D

I do not know how to be anymore clear. I do not want to install leopard first.

I want a clean brand new hard drive, and I dont want to install leopard before installing snow leopard.

How is this accomplished? I thought there was a Full Version Disc for 129$ as per the usual for those of use who dont want to have a previous leopard install on our HDDs.

Not this time.

You currently have Leopard installed, correct? If you do, then you can use the upgrade disc to Erase and Install SL. This will format the drive and install SL.

You're just ignoring what he says. He clearly DOES NOT want to have Leopard installed first.

I'm not ignoring anything.

There are really two options here. Either the machine currently has Leopard installed, and the OP does an Erase and Install, or he buys the box set and installs it however he wants.

I understand that the $29 upgrade will require to have Leopard Installed first. Im not disputing that.

This is not my question.

My Question is, Is there a FULL install version of Snow Leopard for purchase?? Wether it be 129$, 229$, 60000$ w/e, is there one? or is there just an upgrade?

the Full install is on the Disk(for erase and install), just not accessible unless u have leopard.

better have a plan B, since restore discs are very specific to the hardware with which they shipped. Won't work on anything but the processor it shipped with. Your computer would have to be the exact same model as the person whose restore discs you were borrowing.

This plan only works with a retail disc.
