we don't need statistics for this, just look around you and peer at what phone a person is using when they pull it out of their pocket, it's clear iphone is the most popular of all cell phones today

synth3tik, why on earth are you doing all of that to sync your contacts/calendar? My iMac syncs with Google as does my Android devices so everything is in sync over the air.

Well the new Captivate is pretty quick IMO. Give it a try at AT&T stores next time you're in the mall and have a few minutes to kill.

Aren't AT&T Android phones terrible, though? They don't allow Market apps.

All true!

Being a mac user, I'm used to feeling like a member of an elite minority. But ever since the iPod and iPhone took off, I sort of lost that... like somehow it was uncool because every suburban soccer mom had an apple product.

So, while it may sound silly... I'm actually glad that perhaps we're slowly on the way back to that...
iPhone is no longer cool to own. It is common.

AT&T phones only allow market apps. I'm not sure if the captivate is the same but up till now they haven't allowed the installation of apps from anywhere else but Android Market.

But android on 40 different bad styles of phone is cooler? pointless maybe!?

IDK, some people swear by their android, I want nothing more then to throw this POS at the jerk that sold it to me (And didn't let me exchange it within my 30 day exchange period). Yeah, I'm salty.:p

Right. calling BS on that. And the rest of ur story too. U sync to google account and the phone pulls all the info in from ur google account. no one with half a brain does anything u did.

Re: sales vs. activation: Google is notified by the carrier every time a new Android phone is activated on their network. - Guardian interview

Android is nice. Solid. Fun. Plenty of apps. Widgets rule. Lots of phone choices. (Should be some Android slates later this year, too.)

Voice input for everything is wonderfully convenient. Voice activated search and voice guided car navigation is icing on the cake.

Android users get a choice of carriers in the USA.

And instead of having to rely on a recently-used app list like both iOS and Android have, you can just hit the Back button to go to the last app you used. In other words, it keeps a context trail. That alone makes it more intuitive and easy to use. (Unlike in iOS when one app launches another and there's no automatic way to go back up the calling chain.)

I don't have internets on my main computer. Also I don't like google's cloud one bit. Again, it shouldn't have to travel all the way to a google server then back to my computer.

Yawn....microsoft windows still owns a large market share and thats locked down! but they sell droves because they have a generic hardware base!

I dont fancy running a OS on my phone that 100's of half techy nerds have messed with wrote viruses for because its that popular only to find out ive lost half my texts and photos because ive opened an email!

Andriod is the new microsoft windows of phones yes its early but it will get bugy ridden laggy and a mess to use if it gets overdressed!

It will end up ether becoming a windows platform full or viruses!
Or a linux type that will be that difficult no one will want to pick it up!

Aah, I see. What about missing sync for Android? Would that help at all?

The bigger difference is that Android phones are available on EVERY carrier, even boost mobile has an android phone now. They are also available across all price points. There are free android phones, there are $50 android phones, there are $100 android phones.

There are only the 199 and 299 iPhone 4's. They aren't even selling the white ones yet.

Making a thread like this is like making a thread saying. ZOMG dumbphones are selling more phones than android phones, O NOES!!!

My thoughts exactly. Every other week there's a BOGO on phones using the Android OS.

What the android guys are scared to admit is that if they were to add an extra tier of iPhone, a free or $50 one (a nano perhaps) on top of the $99 3GS and the current iP4, and offer the iPhone on all carriers, Android simply wouldn't stand a chance.

I know alot of people with iPhones and a lot without, but I know very few that wouldn't get one if the phone was cheaper, or they could get it with a cheaper provider like sprint.

The incredible is pretty....incredible

I like apple products and use them every day, writing on a iPad right now. But the incredible is a pretty beast phone. In a year or 2 or possibly sooner, google might be able to outpace apples innovation and I might jump ship if their offerings are better.

Remember how iPhone was revolutionary when it came out? Well now it is more evolutionary. Apples evolves only once a year, while google is constantly evolving with different hardware and software. I don't know who will "win" nor do I know how one would define winning in this case but we can all be happy knowing there will be very good options for us as smart phones develop.

the android openness is **** by the manufacturer locks... you pretty much get the same lock-down as iphone with less beer-fart apps (it is not open if you cant root it!)

But Apple makes 30% of all PC profits with a minuscule % of units sold. Also they make 90% of profits on high-end PCs.

I've always wondered how different the market would have looked had Apple and Google not been so close back then, and the Android was still a BlackBerry style OS.

The HTC1 concept images are very encouraging. I'm going to be signed up for 2 years with an IP4. If in 2 years, that concept is reality I'll at least have a real choice then between the IP5 and Android. Right now it's not a real choice if you care about:

* best industrial design
* snappiest UI
* Retina display
* control over the app store to prevent malware/viruses

The only people who buy android phone is people who have never owned an iPhone.

No one that's ever owned an iPhone would go android, that's walking backward android is sooooooooo lagy.

Dream on. I've had an iPhone for 2 years. Switched to HTC incredible on Verizon and love it. HTC incredible and other new Android phones are very fast.

Come one the Incredible is still flimsy plastic, non-responsive UI and no front-facing camera, not to mention NO Retina Display(TM). :cool:

Oh. I totally misunderstood that.

I own both a iphone 4 and a Nexus One. I have owned the 2G, 3G, 3GS, and the iphone4. Android and ios each have their own advantages. Froyo on the N1 eliminated the lagginess I experienced on that phone. Played with the Droid x and the Tmobile version of the Galaxy S (captivate?). I wouldn't trade my ip4 for the droid x. The Samsung Galaxy S was a head turner. The screen was excellent. This phone is a contender.

Not sure whether or not I am keeping my ip4. My issues are with AT&T and their reception, dropped calls, and bandwidth throttling on uploads are keeping me on the fence.

There is no lag in the Galaxy S.
