Competition only benefits the consumer... please remember that.

Iphone users shouldn't want Android to fail... it would be bad for everyone.

Imagine a world with only one dominant airline/automoblie/bank/etc.... Iphone is no exception.

I really don't care if Android falls flat on it's face or is the next big thing. I have the phone I want. If others find a phone they like better and it's not an iPhone, I really couldn't care less. Competition is good thing.

I really don't care enough to be FOOLED. And I'm amazed that there are those who apparently are.

*starts slow clapping*

Couldn't have said it better, myself.

Google needs to fix the Android App Store... SOOOOO much crap. They at least need to stick all the porn in its own category. Searching the Android App store can be rather embarrassing if someone is looking over your shoulder.

One of their big selling points is "openess" compared to the Apple Store. The moment they start monitoring what gets to go in, they'll face the same walled garden analogies Apple is facing.

You do realize that android is based on linux, so its not like google is creating a phone OS from scratch.

Comparing android to OS/2 clearly shows that OP as little knowledge of the causes of OS/2's demise. One huge mistake IBM made with OS/2 was contracting Microsoft to write the OS.

While Apple does have a good track record with OSX which it ported to the iPhone successfully. You cannot infer google's lack of experience as a sure recipe for failure. Just look at the increasing marketshare android has, as proof.

Not really, certainly can increase their monitoring without approaching apple's totalitarianism. No oversight leads to anarchy, some management and oversight is needed imo but adding some does not make a walled garden.

Apparently looking at the size of Apple's cash hoard, most people prefer living in "walled gardens" rather then trashy ghettos.

OS/2 was born out of a joint effort between IBM and Gates. Gates took the base code to Windows 3.1 and IBM continued the develop OS/2 into a business OS for PC's and IBM PS/2's. OS/2 was great at the time, but Gates got out early and out-marketed IBM and IBM gave up on the OS. Too bad. Yeah, I'm old. Agree Android cannot be compared to OS/2 and it's demise.

You can argue that Apple is only doing "some management" too. There is no distinct line between what is too much and what is too little. For some people, even the smallest amount of monitoring will draw comparisons--- and I doubt Google will do that since it is their biggest selling feature.

If you believe that, then keep drinking the koolaid. No one in the right mind believes that apple only doing "some" monitoring and there's no distinct line between too much and too little. Most people understand that apple is completely controlling what goes into the app store, in large part to the detriment of free speech.

The real reason android won't surpass iOS is because of the open nature of android. And the terrible state of the android app store. Very few apps are able turn a profit. Sure android passed 100k apps. But take a look at revenue from apps sales on both platforms.

At one point I was actually thinking about developing for the Palm devices. Good thing I never followed up. I'm doing iOS development and I'm much happier.

It takes an INCREDIBLE AMOUNT OF EXPERTISE to develop an OS, development tools, and SDK. Apple is about 10 years ahead of everybody else.

By the same logic, iPhone is just as doomed because, obviously, Microsoft has a lot more experience in OS development (and remember it developed mobile OSes years ahead of Apple) and its software development tools are light years ahead of the ones from Apple. Apple does not even have its own debugger, LOL

What is going to hurt Android is fragmentation. Google has a decent UI, but it gets replaced by what phone makers want to slap on there. So, there is no consistency among different Android models.

If I were a programmer and want to write apps, I'd just stick with the Apple Store. It is a heck of a lot easier testing for 4 phone models than 400+.

You're not exactly listening or getting the point but I'll attempt to explain it to you again in simpler terms. If Google were to do some monitoring, such as removing porn applications, how is that not limiting "free speech" as you put it. Are you saying that just because it is an adult entertainment medium that limiting it suddenly becomes "okay"?

Apple definitely does curate their App Store and they are very much controlling about what gets to go in. But if Google's main selling point is openness then even the smallest amount of monitoring can be seen as a hamper on "free speech". How does Google have the right to deem what is worthy to be said and what isn't? Any monitoring, even if it is to a lesser degree than Apple, will go against their openness marketing point and give off an impression of trying to build a walled garden.

Apple is a couple years behind Android on the OS side... iOS is terrible with hardly any features. Nobody could possibly argue otherwise with a straight face.

With how close Apple and Google used to be, I wouldn't be surprised if Google was just a few cycles behind Apple.

Are you kidding? Android already offers more features and is already more flexible than iOS.

iOS resides on iPhones, iPads and iPods.

Android is on phones, GPS units, tablets, cars and a ton of other electronic devices.

Yeah, sure... Android needs to 'catch up'. LOL, what planet do you live on?

Only the top apps and featured apps from the App Store make lots of profit. If it is not featured and doesn't appear on the top 50, very few people will actually notice a new app.

I think _both_ platforms (iOS & Android) have their strengths.

The iPhones platform is nicely refined.

The Android platform strikes fear in this forum.

A perfect setting for great confrontations ... :)

Meh. I'll continue using (and enjoying) both platforms, OS/2 comparisons be damned! :p

With the palm reference, I was under the impression that WebOS was one well refined, fun to use os. Is this wrong?

The Android Market is HORRIBLE. They have around 70,000 apps right now but HALF of them aren't even apps! Most of the apps have HORRIBLE graphics and look like Blackberry apps. The whole Android Market needs revamped! Fast! And please don't start that "The App Store has fart apps thing." That's so 2009.

Oh and the apple app store is the bastion of quality and civility. One word. iFart, and the whole fart apps show that that iPhone app store has crap just like the android store.

What the android app store has, is much more fee apps, yes good quality apps.
