Anti-glare!!!

Out of a dozen Apple portables, I enjoyed reading on my MacBook Airs and plastic MacBooks the most.

I have a first gen unibody 15" MBP and a mid-2009 13" MBP with glossy screen and I just cannot use them outdoors at all, which is pretty frustrating. Also, they are not great in highly lighted offices.

I would beg Apple to give the 13" MBP an optional anti-glare. The 15" has to stay, as I need its Express Port, but I would sell this overheating/constant fan/2 hours battery (out of the claimed 7) piece of crap any day, if I had the option of anti-glare on 13".

Totally depends on your eyes and your lighting conditions. There is no objective answer to this, only subjective.

Thanks everyone for the responses.

Now I have come to the conclusion that I am going to go with the ANTI-GLARE screen because I was in an Apple store today and found the matte screen to be so much more visually friendly then the glossy screen that was right beside it.

QUESTION
I'm wondering if I should go with the base 15 inch with the matte screen or spend the extra $358 to get the top of the line 15 inch with matte screen and 500GB @ 7200rpm ????

p.s I get the student discount.

...I also wanted to add that I did notice that MATTE screen to have quite smaller text then the glossy version. What do you guys think of this?

Best answer so far!

My eyes simply cannot handle a matte screen. It gives off a certain shimmer and my eyes get bothered by areas getting lighter/darker depending on the viewing angle.

I tried working with a matte screen and after 8 hours I had to return it cuz I had a headache. It wasn't a mac, but when I demo'd the Mac matte screen I found the same properties/problems.

Honestly, buy the i7 antiglare with 7200rpm. It's worth the investment and you won't second guess yourself. :)

That's the difference between the regular and hi res display. I like more screen realestate and therefor I like it. Some people have complained that the text can be a bit too small to read but it doesn't bother me.

It depends a lot on the lighting conditions, what you are planning to do with your laptop (i.e. sw) and finally your eyes.

Personally, I returned a high res anti glare i5 and bought a glossy standard res i5 because the resolution was simply too high for me.

I use the MBP indoor only, 90% of the time just for surfing, 5% iTunes and 5% Office.

The high res makes everything too small (including text!), I found it very hard to read, and I didn't want to resize every website I visit with the shortcut 'cmd +/-'. The standard screen was easier on the eyes, in particularly the text when reading news, etc. hence I swapped it.

Good to see they have resized the 'Macbook Pro' writing on the bottom bezel... always thought they were a bit big on the older anti-glare bezel.

Weird cause mine looks just as big? Can anyone confirm they resized the text?

I'd say the glossy text is slightly crisper if you don't have any glare on your screen. But not by much.

Anti-Glare is a lot easier to read text. Glossy screens tend to have more pop and sharpness to them. Its a blatant trade off.

Wonderful!! Way mooooooore professional and cool than glossy!!!

It really does.

The original PowerBook/old MacBook Pro design was so sleek. That paired with the original Cinema Displays was the ultimate piece of sexy design.

I hate the 24" Cinema Display.. the glass, the black border.. I really wish they'd bring out a 24" Cinema Display that was a replica of the 23" one; matte panel, all silver design but of course the iSight camera.

Can only dream.. I think we'll find out a lot at WWDC on Apple's attitude towards glassy displays. The 30" Cinema Display is being rumoured for replacement, and it is the only display Apple sells that is still matte. If Apple updates their displays and introduces a new 27" one, if it is all glassy and offers no matte alternative then it is obvious Apple has no care for anything but how it looks (well, more so than their previous balance of functionality:looks. Pretty much 1:99 on that ratio now).

I like the ANTI-GLARE, but I hate the HI-RES.. and you can only get the matte screen with in hi-res which sucks.

Can anybody recommend me any brands for a matte film for MacBook Pro 15"?
(That can be sent to Denmark, or purchased in Denmark:rolleyes:)

That is one slick looking laptop right there mate! Easily matches the "Professional" line to a tee. That silver bezel looks a lot classier than the glossy tacky black bezel.

The general consensus here, which I may add, is that the people who had already owned the glossy ones, are just either:

1. Extremely disappointed, because they didn't get the option upon purchase.
2. want "blinged up" colour and saturation.
2. Want to be continually reminded what the weather is like outside the peering window shades.
3. Want a portable over-sized vanity mirror.
4. They only work in "darkness"
5. They like glossy black bezels.

Ok, I'm mostly being sarcastic here, but I recently sold my 09 Macbook Pro 15" glossy, and going all out on the i7 15" AG with 256gb SSD. I got a sales guy from the Apple store to position both side by side, against a bright window face. Its evident the gloss is pretty much useless.

I'm a part-time photographer, and I hated having to position the laptop so the client can get a better glance whilst out. Again I cannot comprehend how one CANNOT find this annoying on glossy screens.

To each their own of course. I'm not here to persuade, rather to share my experience of owning a glossy screen. Thank you Apple for giving me this option!

mrCAMPO,

I just got mine Thursday night after waiting 5 weeks for it to arrive. I too like the silver bezel. It looks better than I thought it would.

is that 15 or 17?

Looking at the width of the speaker grilles, I would say it's a 17".

I was at an Apple Store that had the 15" hi-res matte, and the 17" matte side by side, and was able to set up each with the same pages of fine text. For some reason, I found the 17" easier on the eyes with tiny text, even though it has a slightly greater pixel density than the 15" hi-res. Could it be that the 17" matte screen is better than the newly developed 15" hi-res matte screen? Has anyone else noticed this?
