Ok I am not dropping anything. I just want to see how flexible the backs are, these parts are not cheap by any means. As far as scratching I say get a screen protector and no worries..........I will the back and see how the alu. casing hods up.

What a useless "test". Of course it broke because the shell was hollow and there was nothing inside to help absorb the shock.

You just said it was going to be more rigid, now you say it will absorb shock? Which is it? You can't have both.

Edit: sorry, another poster said more rigid. Either way...which is it? Shock absorbers or more rigid? Either way I say it makes no difference. Glass receives enough of a shock, it's gonna break.

I do agree with you to some extent man, it isn't magical super glass, and it will break, but this article is total fud and unfair. Is there even video proof to show they didn't just beat it to death with a hammer then post this for the sake of some internet traffic? I can guarantee the new iPhone will not be as easily breakable as this article would have you believe.

More material inside = more mass = more force. So it's more likely that it will break with the materials inside.

You guys are brutal. You wanna see if it breaks.....wait until you get yours and drop it on the pavement then report your results back here. Cut this guy some slack he did a prelim drop test. Its glass and glass breaks. Of course gizmodo is salted and will jump at the chance to say negative things about apple right now. ifixyouri did a test, posted it here thats it.

three consecutive drops? what do you expect to happen? it's easy to break something if you are trying to break it....and most people do not drop their iPhones while using the touch screen, especially three times...most slips occur when somebody is taking it out of a pocket or a hip case which would be lower than 3.5 feet...and besides this "iPhone" was somewhat hollow which could be a factor

True, I think a video should be included.

But I don't think it's FUD. It's a reasonable response to Apples bending glass pictures. When I saw those pics I knew we would have issues. They implied (need a better word here...can't think) an unreasonable expectation to the customer.

iFix - I'm curious about where you were able to purchase the glass from; is it really the Apple glass or did you buy it from an online supplier somewhere?

I know i've replaced a few iphone digitizers and LCDs, and they cost about $30, so I know damn well they aren't OEM/Apple official products.

For an official test you should goto FoxConn and grab a phone and drop it.. or buy one and drop it when they come out. :)

what if the more materials still weigh the same?

Also, i reckon whe you drop a phone, you are more likely to drop it on the corner, which is metal + plastic/rubber for the bit around the glass. I reckon that is btter than the 3gs corner. Also i think the iphone 4 is just a bit stronger.

Final thought: We should try to no drop our phones?? or use a pouch at least?

Now THAT would be quite a feat! Taking the phone to space?

Plastic/rubber around the glass? Are you sure of this? I haven't noticed a plastic/rubber surround on the glass.

Apples bumper case doesn't look that protective to me...
My incase slider has survived for two years. The case barely has any scratches.
I'm hoping that belkin makes a case for the iPhone 4 that is just like the clear grip vue for iPad.

Yes, but you never got the fully experience the beauty that is the iPhone design because you covered the thing up all the time.

Perhaps your expectations are too low. Try dropping something made of a plastic (like a Coke bottle) three (or three thousand) times on the floor - it will not break. Glass, on the other hand, is a different matter.

Yes, but then there's the whole debate of perceived quality between plastic and glass. Sure, the plastic will take the falls, but would people ever find the plastic bottle more aesthetically pleasing than a classic glass Coke bottle? Do beverages in glass bottles emit a sense of higher quality than those in plastic? Yup.

There's a reason that no luxury car builders make plastic cars. They left that to Saturn.

I took the phone out of the case from time to time, but I don't really wanna look at the finger print magnet that is the black iPhone. And the incase slider is a great case, its actually pretty thin. Its not like I've had the thing in an otterbox, I couldn't handle using one of those. They really kill the design, the incase just adds support.
