Right, but whether or not it's an OEM part is what's in question.

These guys make money on i<device> repairs not on web publishing. I do not think they would risk their reputation (with no clear benefit) by falsifying the tests.

Whether or not ifixyouri part was OEM I can not answer that he or she would have to post pictures of the part...but I do agree a video of some sort would be better because this glass can sure bend.

I think it would make a huge difference it the case was filled with components and bound together solid, like they are in a real phone. In THAT case, I believe the drop test would be totally different..
If these guys are really pros, they should know better than to do a drop test with an empty case, of an unreleased product, knowing very little about how the phone is put together. This is not just a fanboi opinion, but a general one that i would apply to any product.
IMO, these guys just wanted to get some media coverage with this so called "drop" test... just sayin'.

EDIT: and how difficult would it have been to get a video of the drop?!? Just too many ASSUMED things about this. And I LOVE how GIZMODO published this right along, without asking any questions. Great journalism!!

These guys are not a new/gadget site. They are repair shop. They are not getting money from page hits therefore there did not pay attention to making the video.

And sure this is not the most accurate test possible but this is the most accurate test available today. They just do not have real iPhone 4 yet. They did what they could. Something obviously is better than nothing.

I'm sorry, but I have to disagree with you on "something" being better than "nothing". The phone is not out yet, they don't have ALL the info about how it's built, nor access to ALL the parts, so they shouldn't do the test.
It's like if I went and bought a BMW frame, ran it into a wall and saying these BMW's are very unsafe and look horrible in a wreck..

EDIT: don't kid yourself... ANYBODY benefits from a little bit of media coverage, i don't care what business they were in.

Testing...as in dropping...products...yes...it was a simple drop test...Wow...and how old are you to keep harping on something that i made a mistake on? Let's remember one thing here...I'm here trying to HELP and INFORM. I'm not here to get ripped on for a physics error, or lesson. If i wanted that, i'd go back to school.
Let me rephrase this NEWBIES...apparently we have a bunch of children in here who have never ever ever in their lives made a mistake with anything school related. I applaud you for that.
The impact is greater with the heavier the object. Take this for example a truck and a motorcycle that you're riding on both slam into a wall going the same speed. The truck weighs 10000 lbs and the motorcycle weighs 500 lbs. Which causes more damage to the wall? That was my point.
And the entire point to this thread was to INFORM you...not for me to get ripped on because i messed up on my acceleration formula. Wow.
f you guys prefer to continue with this drop test yourselves, calculate the formulas, do whatever makes you happy, by all means, go for it.
If you're trying to sweet talk people here and trying to get them to use your company at some point you're doing a horrible job! You don't come in and belittle members simply because you're mad at them, ffs is that your business model?

The glass seems to be hit from at least 3 locations, not a single 1 "drop."
So no video?

I thought the same thing when I saw the pics on their first thread. Looks more like they hit it with something than from a drop. I would like to see a video of a COMPLETE iPhone with no editing/stopping of the camera, then I can put some stock into what they say. Until then, no dice.

Say you drop your phone and the glass breaks—How much does it cost to repair at the Apple Store? Do you have to buy an entirely new phone for 599/699?

Perhaps your expectations are too low. Try dropping something made of a plastic (like a Coke bottle) three (or three thousand) times on the floor - it will not break. Glass, on the other hand, is a different matter.

and a coke bottle won't fetch my email, and make calls either...and plastic iPhones have been dropping and breaking for the last 2 years...go on any college campus and you'll see all the broken 3G screens...the point I was making is that how many people intentionally drop their iPhones three times to see how durable they are?

Currently apple will replace a cracked screen for free if under warranty. (not by acts of dropping your phone apparently only if it's "defective")

$199 if not.

Are you assuming when a helicopter crashes or a train wrecks the glass doesn't break?

Nope. All he is saying is that Apple is very good at PR. They can tell the story right. Trains, helicopters, missiles! Pile up the stuff until average Joe feels convinced ;)

But with sudden impact...smash goes the iPhone! As with any high-end electronic.

Let me clarify something here...this was an informal drop test. Plain and simple. People flame and say negative stuff all day. Internet arguing is pointless. We broke it...posted some pictures...which sparked discussion...that's all.

We dropped the glass flat on the face...not sure why people are saying 3 points of impact...maybe a grain of sand or tiny tiny rock that we couldn't see was on the concrete, not sure...anyways...

There were two total tests performed. All pictures around the internet are of ONLY the first test.

First round broke on the 3rd drop, on concrete, flat. As stated.

Second test(which was requested by macrumors users), was another test to see if it would break on different surfaces(carpet/concrete) if it hit the corner, fumbled, etc. It broke on the 7th, hitting the top left corner, on concrete. The second drop test is not pictured yet.

The LCD was in there…the pictures were of the glass taken out of the housing to show that it is laser etched with ‘Apple’. We took it out in order to show that the glass was in fact the iPhone 4 glass, with the front facing camera hole.

Next test...we'll make it more formal to make the nay sayers happy :)

Just do the next test with a full body phone and THEN post that one all over the internet.
EDIT: and post a video. just for fun, right?

Yes...we will do it just for fun :) Just like this one...but next time with a video camera. Just wait for June 24th...we'll even do it with a bumper on it.

And we weren't really expecting this to blow up like it did...but it did. We were just starting discussion with some fellow board members and it kinda took off.

I'm telling ya... and only half kidding now... it's gotta be the Droid influence.

After all those testosterone laced Droid missile ads, Apple decided to fight back with a new industrial look and rugged comparisons for their phone.

I for one am happy you did this test. It shows that glass will most likely break. I mean we are talking about Apple and just remember they are no longer selling screen protectors because it gives people the impression that the 3G and 3GS glass was meant to break. good job on the test......only time will tell when they are released to see how durable they are in the real world.
