I just received my iPhone 4 through AT&T yesterday. After setting it up, I expected to have some reception issues and even attempted to create them myself by bridging the two antennas together. Nothing - no issue. I compared my iPhone to a colleagues and the finish on my antenna is definitely mat compared to his.

As for the proximity sensor, I seem to be having some issues with mine during calls so I can't say that mine's been resolved.

Just thought I'd share.

I just received my phone 5 minutes ago and the metal band is definitely different from my friends. It's very smooth and there is no gap between the bands. I'll take pix later but there is something different.

For this taste test, we've secretly replaced his iPhone4 with an iPhone4.1.
Let's see if he notices the difference.

First five digits of your serial number please?

Italian review. Death grip test (about half video) and 0 problems in good service area. This is the first version not the newer one.

No reception issue as well in France, Paris. I start to wonder if that issue is not only specific to the US? But i still need to test mine in a lower network coverage area.
US folks, I have tried the death grip oustide the US?
Non-US folks, do you have that issue?

It is coming...soon!

i could see my proximity sensor and i have the phone from the 1st batch, just sayin

I can see my proximity sensor and I got mine the day after launch. It's right above the earpiece and if I tilt the phone looking from the charging port up, I can see it.

I can't! Only if it is in sunlight. It was the same way on my 3G.

Not keen on that lighter shade of black for the front.

Me neither, but maybe the proximity sensor was having problems with the darker tint, but isn't there a hole in the tint where the sensor is? Looks like it to me when I look at it in the sun and you can see the sensor.

Look at the 2nd photo in the giz article. The antenna notch next to the earphone jack is missing.

Ya, this is all very interesting! I haven't had any issues yet, but if this is true I BETTER get a replacement!!! I just got mine two days ago!

I got my iPhone 4 last Saturday and haven't been able to reproduce the signal loss issue at all. I also can see the proximity sensor if I look for it. It's hard to tell though if my antenna is more "matte" or not because I don't have anything to compare it to. I guess I might have a similar phone as this one?

Edit: Mine's a week 27 phone

Not sure if this helps anybody at all but I was just about to return my phone so I went to take off the screen protector and I thought I would try it without and it worked flawlessly again.
Apparently my screen protector was interfering with the sensor. kinda sucks but at least I know the sensor works!

This was just my experience so far..

Yes, comparison pix please.. No use in having just pictures of your phone, as that makes your claim very hard to verify.. Thanks!

I called Apple a couple of hours ago and they are sending me a replacement, I should have it tomorrow. I'll post the particulars when I get it as well as some pictures if there really is a difference.

I was hesitant to get a replacement in fear I would receive one with other issues but the WiFi reception on mine was terrible and I do not recall anyone complaining about that. Of course I did have the cellular signal and call drop issue as well but like others am hoping for some kind of miracle software update or recall or something to fix it.

What do you mean by this? i got mine on launch day and i don't have a "gap" between each band and its very smooth. I want to see pics of a different version!!

Check the built week though...I was in the Paris Apple store yesterday to replace my iPhone (bit a of loose volume button but did not repalce it at the end) and the 4 iPhones they showed me were new but made between week 24 and 26. Also they had no stock for new customers. So i asked why they do not have stock for new customers but stock for replacements. The genius said they prioritize current iP4 customers before new one...fair enough but exchanges are older built weeks vs. new customers who will receive a phone just coming out from manufacturing lines and not safety stock from initial launch.

My dad just received a week 28 phone on Monday. Although we haven't compared our phones side by side, he says the finish is no different than mine. I'll have to side by side compare next time I see him (this weekend maybe)

He lives in a remote area (only edge) and has better reception with the 3g than with the 4 with a bumper so far.

I believe this is a recall version. There is no black notch, and yes you could see it at this angle on the original ones, proof

I have a launch day iPhone 4 that i waited in line for for many many hours, and I am experiencing almost every single problem.

I death grip my iPhone, within 5 seconds it goes to searching, and drops whatever call or data its doing. Even without death gripping, the signal is pretty bad (and I live in the SF bay area, and my 3GS never dropped lower than 4 bars)

My camera is forever getting yellower and greener, especially around the middle and the bottom

Every once and a while it takes a good 10 clicks to get it to wake from sleep

The amount of times I've pressed mute with my face is ridiculous. and no matter, even in direct sunlight you cannot i repeat CANNOT see the proximity sensor, even if i lighten the same photo as before as bright as it will go in photoshop (twice).

Please let them fix these phones and call a recall, I don't want to have to banter with the Apple Representative beating around the bush to get a replacement that will most likely have the same problems.

Those images are supposed to be 'proof'? Whatever camera you used to capture those images needs much more light to get a good, clean picture. You see that repeating grid pattern in the picture? That's noise. You can't see any faint details through that much noise.

Get some good pictures, and you can talk about proof.

Man I hate my freaking iPhone 4.. this is my second one already and its worse the previous one. The most annoying thing for me right now is not the signal issue - but the god dam proximity sensor. Im on the phone with about 50 phone calls a day with friends, family, whores, etc. While im on the phone i randomly mute, facetime invite, end call, check email, write email, write text & and so on and so forth.

The phone overall is awesome with the exeption of these two f'n problems that need to be adressed. And dont eat that b/s execuse they sent out saying " we were shocked at our signal formula process ". Its a bunch of bullshiaaaat.

Yeah yeah yeah! I know what you mean! I don't want an accidental mute or facetime screwing up my calling with whores! It's just business with them!

Take it for what it's worth, but...

I just stopped into Best Buy to check on the status of my iPhone pre-order (THAT I PUT IN ALMOST 3 WEEKS AGO NOW!) and asked to speak with the mobile manager.

He was a very nice guy, and it is possible that he was just trying to allow me to leave the store satisfied with an answer. He told me that they havent received any shipments since launch, and part of the reason Apple has been so slow to send out the phones is they were considering a voluntary recall. So it would make no sense to send out a ton of phones only to bring them back in. Right now they are trying to put an extra layer of coating and bezel over the "death spot" to see if that helps alleviate the problem.

Who knows how true that is, and how the mobile manager at Best Buy would know exactly what is going on. It's very possible he is just reading the same reports we are...but I figured I would add it to the list.

Seriously dudes,

I'm so fed up with all this iPhone hullabaloo wondering whether they will fix it - i'm just fed up!

I haven't got any prox isssues, the signal does decline when I put my finger on the spot, but hey, it seems I never do when making a call so I never dropped a call. I palm it when browsing, it doesn't seem to affect it too much.

The only thing I'm thinking about is the colour calibration of the whites on my phone (it's a bit yellow) but now i don't know whether that is good or bad (cool blue looks good to me and so does yellow for vibrant pictures).

I'm just fed up with wasting my life thinking about the negativity, I think i'm on the brink of generating Obsessive Compulsion Disorder (OCD) if I don't have it already.

For some reason I used to have a huge sexual urge when looking at the iPhone but now, it's clouded with negativity, uncertainty, and grief.

My iPhone relationship is becoming like failed marriages so I'm going to quit now and start thinking of my iPhone in a bathing suit and look beyond the nags, imperfections, eye-sight, hearing problems, moles and yellow complexion If you know what I mean.

Sent from my iPhone 4.

YAY!
