28..
thanks!

cant see the proximity sensor under normal light. and a bit of a strain in stronger light.

It is pretty dark black bezel

Oh and it does have the little black thing next to the audio jack :p

Really strange on that picture, held it the same way and angle he did... can still see the black!

Read first page of thread...

can I get a tl;dr version? Maybe the silent recalling is a test for an upcoming mass recall?

Far be it from me to say anything in defense of Gizmodo. But iFixit has got a similar story, apparently deriving from a different source, and has invited readers to report their production week and whether they are seeing problems or not.

The data are spotty, so far.

I had my iPhone 4 replaced today at the Apple Store in Greenville, SC that just opened. I had the antenna and proximity sensor issues. They gave me this so called new model and I must agree that it is new. The matte stainless steel is a big difference from my launch day model and i can't replicate the antenna or proximity issues. Seems to be if your serial is 7R or 7S it's the new problem-less model. Let's see what Apple says in their press conference on Friday :) BTW I love my new iPhone and suggest if you're having any problems take it to an Apple Store and get this new model.

Could you post some pictures to show us the new model? Thank you

The thing that makes this genuine is the change in serial numbers. If it wasn't I'd say people are just hoping, but if the serials have changed - it means the design has probably changed, if ever so slightly.

Maybe that's what the Friday conference is for?

This will end when there are riots in Apple stores and a recall issued on Friday. Mark my words gentlemen.

I read this post around 5pm today and immediately thought "hmmm" when the press conference for tomorrow was announced. Do you know something we don't?

Those S.O.B's >.> I spent over $900 on two phones and MobileMe, and then they come out with this?! I'm so peeved now. I think I have no option but to return my phones and wait to see.

I ordered my iPhone from the AppleStore on June 24. Was due to be delivered by today at the latest. Got an email from Apple on Tuesday citing "high demand" and explaining that as a result they were having to ship it from an "alternative warehouse" and were therefore extending my delivery date by two days.

Once TNT tracking kicked in, it turned out the "alternative warehouse" was actually in Shenzhen. Is it possible that this is a new revision they're rolling out? It just seems to me that regardless of demand, they'd have ensured they fulfilled their store orders on time (it was three weeks ago after all that I ordered it), so I'm a bit sceptical of the "high demand" excuse.

Unfortunately I'm off on holiday now, so won't actually have the phone in my hands for quite a while to see for myself...

Hopefully all the white iPhones will not have this issue, as perhaps Apple have been able to fix them before any are being shipped. I'll be getting it in white, here in Australia and it'd be great not to have any of these issues.

I do wonder, however, the proximity sensor in the white one: would this be white? Or will I have a black spot in the frame?

There's a black spot to let the proximity sensor see thru.

Exactly the same here. I too ordered on the 24th (I'm in the UK).
Mine left China last night with deliver expected on Monday- 2 days later than expected. Would be great if it's a new batch with no problems.

The "refurbished" units provided as replacements by the Apple Store, even right after launch when they're technically still brand new units, have traditionally carried a different serial number format than boxed retail units.

I'm not saying that's for certain the case here, but I wouldn't say that getting a replacement phone with a different serial number is a definitive indicator that something's changed.

Ok, I had to sign up to give my 2 cents... my first iphone 4 I go on launch day had proximity issues as well as signal loss. From day one I could NOT see the proximity sensor. Yesterday went to apple store, swapped it out in 10 minutes.. 7S026 is beginning of my new serial # NOW I can see the sensor by just slightly angling it, doesn't really matter the lighting... as for the surrounding metal - It is without a doubt different (more matte like) and I CANNOT create signal loss.

Put that in your pipe and smoke it

That sounds awesome, it's interesting though that the proximity sensor looks different, but I guess they also fixed the issue where the screen would not turn off or on when it should. Apparently they reacted quite fast and fixed the issue without making any compromise, if they do this with every iPhone 4 that has problems, it's going to make their reputation much better!

Bob, where do you reside? I'd be interested in comparing our phones if you're anywhere in the vicinity of NYC.

Also, how did you get them to swap it out? What reasons did you give? I went to the store and they just said that I should do a restore and then see how it works and come back if I experience a problem. That's all. So what did you say?

I'm in Boston..

I made an appointment, went in, I got a really helpful person, I know this because I saw a lady in there before me, talking to another apple employee and the employee pretty much said we can't do anything, from what I could understand and the lady walked away pissed. I told the female employee I spoke to that my proximity sensor was messed up, she took the phone placed a call w/ it, did all the tests and said, hold on, let me grab you a new one downstairs... I was actually shocked. She knew that they were "new" phones... She activated it, I left. New iphone hardware. End of Story.

I called Apple a couple of hours ago and they are sending me a replacement, I should have it tomorrow. I'll post the particulars when I get it as well as some pictures if there really is a difference.

I was hesitant to get a replacement in fear I would receive one with other issues but the WiFi reception on mine was terrible and I do not recall anyone complaining about that. Of course I did have the cellular signal and call drop issue as well but like others am hoping for some kind of miracle software update or recall or something to fix it.

troutspinner

Just received it, it is week 28 and there is no difference in the surrounding metal band or glass at the proximity sensor. I am not seeing any difference whatsoever as for build but I will say that I cannot totally kill the signal like the last one but can get it to go from 5 bars to 1 bar.

I'll await the press conference tomorrow.

When she took the phone and did the test, did she replicate your issue? Or was it 100% fine when she tried but gave you a new one anyway?

Also, what are the first 5 characters of your serial number? It tells what week # it was made in.
