The technology will catch up soon enough and 2ghz and good battery life will be said together.
How soon?

Maybe we should worry about it catching up enough to say 1Ghz and good battery life together for now. ;)
Nice!

Yup, anyone with android (and the ability to see the battery usage profile) can tell you that the screen is the biggest hog.
More or less likely.

Basically, it's just a ploy to try and steal some of the iPhone 4's thunder before it's released. Most consumers see a bigger number and instantly think of that as better (say 1GHz vs. 2GHz) it's all a big myth.

I doubt anybody will have a viable 2GHz phone until the end of 2011 or later. It's just business.
Another good example: Droid X 8MP camera vs. iPhone 4 5MP camera -> iPhone 4! Surprising, isn't it? You're right. It's all a big myth.

While I agree that competition can lead to innovation I don't think the same can be said about feature dumping. Adding every feature you can think of is not innovation, and its certainly not going to get Apple to do anything. Apples innovation with the iPhone has alway been just as much about what they don't throw into the pot as what they do.
True, true.

It may be faster, but Apple's engineering of the OS can make it run faster and smoother even if the iPhone was at 500Mhz.
Yes. Apple can operate just fine with very little RAM and processor speed. :apple:

why are you posting non iPhone threads in this forum?
It's sort of iPhone related, isn't it?

Right now, a 2 Ghz phone is a joke, as no one besides Apple has software interesting enough to be throttled up to 2Ghz. If the iPad were 2Ghz, it would be a scream machine, but it's unlikely that the battery life would be as impressive.

I'm sure that in a year or more's time, the iPad will be 2GHz, and maybe the iPhone too, but that will come at a time when performance/battery life are balanced out, just like now.
That's possible. Only time will tell.

I can't wait to see what smartphones are like in December! I'm getting a new phone then and it'll be very interesting to see what the technology in phones are like then. Perhaps a 4" or 4.3" with 1280 x 760 resolution display? That's going to be awesome!
I don't know... seems a little far fetched.

Hey I-Peoples

To start I will say have absolutely nothing against the IPhone or Apple and actuallylove their computers. I also love their software, UI and overall ability to deliver a solid experience. One thing I cant stand however is the overpriced hardware that seriously lacks in features specifically with the IPAD / IPhone. I mean seriously... no micro SD expansion on the IPhone or IPad is a sick joke. Just to force me to buy the 64gb version. What if I wanted to buy the 64gb anyway wanted to expand it to 96!... give us some flexibility for crying out loud!.. Sorry... getting carried away and I'm sure its not news.

I'm sad to have read through this entire thread and not come across at least one person who knows what they are talking about when it comes to NVIDIA Tegra. Bash Motorola all you want because I'll be the first to say I've gone through a number of their poorly made devices in the past. It is the Tegra processor that you should be putting some research into before voicing knowledge lacking opinions.

The Tegra processor is a system on a chip which not only includes a dual core 1ghz CPU but also a foll blown Nvidia GPU as well. The horsepower behind this chip is drastically higher then anything out today while at the same time using less power then anything currently on the market today. So comments about how 2ghz is unrealistic are far from accurate or factual. As I state previously it has 2 cores running at 1ghz each. I could get into a bunch of tech specs and list competitors to the Nvidia Tegra "example: Snapdragon" but I will say that Motorola may not be the best handset maker but Nvidia is one of the best at what they do. Look up their TESLA line and check out how much GB/s worth of processing bandwidth they pack into a single PCI express card. My suggestion is to do some research before thinking apple is the be all and end all of the cell phone world. Everyone knows that you can only stay on top for so long... The whole what comes up will eventually come down... just ask Nortel. I can assure you that this chip will outperform and dance circles around the single core 1ghz A4 processor powering the IPAD.

I personally wanted to try out somthing new a year ago to experience the feeling of being an early adopter so I picked up an Android 1.5 phone. Android 1.5 is defiantly not comparable to the IPhone in any way and I'm banging my head against the wall because the phone is was made un-rootable by Rogers so I'm stuck with 1.5. After a single year its crazy to see how far Android has come with version 2.2. This holiday season will bring the release of 3.0 "Gingerbread" which is rumored to have several key upgrades that might just put it on an even playing field the IPhone. Also considering Android will be coupled with this Tegra processor I can't imagine what it will look like in another year so with that I'll log off by saying.

APPLE - I love you! You've always made dope products but you gotta stop it with this proprietary cable, feature lacking, flash unsupported, storage expansion lacking, app store dictating trend you're on or you might find the IPhone / IPad not selling at all in a couple years.

Cheers!
Really? :D

I don't know... seems a little far fetched.

It's not. It's fact. Android 3.0 will support resolutions of 1280 x 760 for 4"+ devices. That kind of resolution on a large device, such as the Droid X, would result in 346ppi. That resolution on a 4" screen would result in an even higher PPI. Keep in mind they're quite a bit larger than the 3.5" screen on the iPhone 4.

Basically, Android phones by December can equal or better the iPhone 4 in ppi.

It's not uncommon to change speed depending on what is happening. Knock it down to 256MHz when idling, for examplem and ramp it up to 2GHz when needed.

As for turning off stuff to save battery... yes, Apple recommends that a lot for the iPhone:

  • Turn off 3G
  • Turn off WiFi
  • Turn off Bluetooth
  • Turn off the equalizer
  • Turn off push email
  • Don't fetch email as much
  • Don't use third party apps
  • Don't use location services

As for "copying"... who's later with the front facing camera, high resolution display, Gorilla glass?

Even with those items active all the time, the iphone gets far superior battery life.... its not a good comparison.

And then the next iPhone will be better than those phones in another 6 months. It is the natural progression, not surprising...

Well... in terms of screen, how can it be improved? It's already reached such a high ppi that Steve Jobs himself said that it's beyond the human eye's potential at recognizing individual pixels. He's not fond of larger screens either (as evident in 4 generations of iPhones all 3.5")

I honestly don't really want a bigger screen. At least not unless they can do it without making it a bigger phone.

There is alot more to screens than just pixel count.

I can't wait. I'm sure it will have a 4+ inch screen with the new 1280 x 760 (or whatever it is) resolution that will have the same pixel count give or take :)

As someone who worked for a major phone manufacturer in the past let me tell you as a FACT that phone features are often plotted out YEARS in advance. Even if the technology isn't currently available, economical, etc.

Anyone that thinks Motorola is copying Apple because the features of an upcoming phone matches features on the iPhone is ignorant to how phones get designed and eventually wind up on the shelf.

It's rather annoying that people continue to try and find reasons to raise Apple/iPhone above all others coupled by having to try and discredit/slam down any competitor.

Just enjoy your phone. Stop worrying about if another company is making a phone which may or may not compete with the iPhone.

That is - unless you're so insecure about the phone you own that you need to belittle everything else to make yourself feel better.

Fails to make sense.

What on earth are you going to be doing on a 4 inch screen that utilizes a 2 Ghz processor, the battery life would be horrendous.

Instead of this motorola should be working on a better screen and a smaller case.

Your point is 'proved' by the fact that the iPhone is the younger sibling of the iPad.

His Steveyness 'built' the iPad idea first (as everyone knows?) and decided it would make a great phone - up to 8 years ago.

I'm pretty sure I don't want a bigger screen. The EVO is already too big for a pocket phone in my opinion. I'm sure the display technology will continue to be improved.

You win some, you lose some.

Lol at you guys comparing battery life.

Battery life on all these smartphones SUCKS. My last phone (a Razr) would go up to 3 or 4 DAYS depending on usage.

I could literally go away for the weekend and not need to bring a charger with me. There was also the option of taking 5 seconds to throw in a charged battery and the phone would boot up in less than 10 seconds.

Arguing about battery life between a Droid and an iPhone is like arguing about whether the kids in wheelchairs or the kids in crutches are better at soccer.

ROFLMAO

My old rotary phone doesn't even need a battery! All other phones fail!

LOL what a luddite. Btw, a bigger screen means it can house a bigger battery, so no, battery life wont be horrendous ;)

http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/10/motorola-wants-a-2ghz-android-by-years-end-so-do-we/

I think it's pretty ridiculous. How are you supposed to get through a full day of battery life? And a gyroscope? Hmm... where have I heard that before? I mean, come on Motorola. Apple just announced it, and you're already "copying" the feature? The iPhone 4 isn't even out yet and they already plan on using it. Anything they make will be compared to the iPhone. They want to be able to say, 'we match every feature, and add HDMI, 2gh tegra, etc..' Ugh... it's going to lead to battery charging wars. NO THATS MY OUTLET!

Because the Hardware of Android devices are not regulated by google, every 3 months hardware manaufacters make newer , faster and better devices. Android will get some really fast chips over the next 12 months.

It will most likely have the power modes that motorola device use now, where you can run the processor at the max speed or dial it back to save battery life..
For instance 2GHZ would be performance mode.
1.5 GHZ would be smart mode
and 900 Ghz would be battery mode.

What? When did this happen? How do you know all the little details about Android 3.0? Who told you this?

Yeah, and by the time I try to nab the current "high-end" Android phone (I like gadgets, no matter how biased) it's already been outdated by another Android phone. Just one of the many reasons why I'll never give up my iPhone. :D

Outdated doesn't mean unusable. The 3gs is out dated by more than a year and still works decent. flagship android models may be replaced in quick succession but not outdated.

I realize that, but I don't like the feeling of "Oh, a new phone is out. Looks like mine has been outdated again." With the iPhone, it only gets a refresh once a year, giving you complete piece of mind that you have the best iPhone currently on the market, (if you know what I mean). Android gets it at least three times a month. :D
