Uh, what? Develop a new one? How are we supposed to do that?

You want us to start a new company, develop our own phone and mobile OS, just because we think the notification system sucks?

You people are never content.

That's because this forum is full of tech geeks and Apple is focused on the average consumer. They want things to be easy and simple, but that comes at a price.

The iPhone is like a bike with training wheels. You'll get to your destination but you'll do it Apple's way, at Apple's speed, and inside of Apple's safety net. It's so easy a caveman can do it, and people who are geeky enough to participate in a forum want more than simple access to their device.

That sums up Apple's objective right there. The iPhone is for people who want to turn on their device and use it as Apple set for you. The iPhone is not for people who like to customize. The iPhone is not for people who like to tweak.

I don't see why Apple can't appeal to both markets. All Apple would have to do is allow unsigned applications to be installed outside of iTunes. They could allow a simple jailbreak like WebOS does so both the average caveman consumer is pleased along with the techno geek.

But you know if you are so unhappy with the camera on the iphone buy an SLR or another phone. But one thing your not going to do is change my opnion or anyone elses of the iphone. It's a great device it has some shortcomings but then again what device doesn't? I Personally don't buy phones based on camera resolution. But if you do then that's great. But if you always want the latest and greatest or always comparing specs on products you will never enjoy anything

But whats the excuse for apple to fall behind? I just find it funny that people tout the iphone as the "gold standard" but when pressed about why x phone has this feature and iphone doesnt.. it turns to "it doesnt matter" or "just buy x phone".... apple is not the best phone because it sells the most.. apple is the worlds leading marketing/advertising company and they do a good job of making people like you feel like you getting the best when you truly are not.

Iphone is a good phone.. excuse me.. WAS a great phone but now it is getting passed up fast and with extreme precision...

You just have to learn not to set your expectations too high with apple announcements. I've learned that Apple releases/gives users new technology and updates at their own pace.. a little bit at a time. once you know this you wont set your expectations sky high before every announcement and then you wont be dissapointed. Who do you think will get HTC when Apple don't change things as UI? The AVERAGE CONSUMER! What keeps the GEEKS are jailbreaking-options and the AppStore. But believe me: Average consumers are the ones that will change platform easiest. Geeks are much more bound to the brand.

Lets look at the history of UI changes. For Example the Macintosh OS has pretty much had the same UI over its 20 something year history grant there were big enhancements in the OS over the years the UI has pretty much been consistent.

Lets look at the windows OS. Since windows 95 the start menu has never changed with the exception of the windows LOGO on the start menu. So what is so wrong with the Iphone UI? If your bored with the iphone thats one thing but apple just isnt going to revamp the OS for you.

And lets see all HTC has is the Sense UI and i dont see millions of customers migrating over to HTC. Bring a real discussion with valid points not just spin 😀

It's not so much that looking at the same thing makes me angry. It's what other company's are doing in terms of passing the iPhone, which they have. Android kills iPhone in customization, home screen looks, notifications, etc. I was hoping for something more from Apple with this event. It's just a letdown. I'm on a family plan with my mother so I can't switch carriers every year when a new phone comes out. She pays for my bill, I'm only 18. I would get the milestone if it wasn't $600. Idk maybe verizon is cheaper than AT&T and I can convince her to switch. You can't say your not happy with this announcement. They did nothing but add a cheesy looking multitask function, a gamecenter (who cares) and wait for it, we now have apple approved ad's!

It's really not complicated - Apple has always retained more control over the user experience. In computers, and now phones. That's always been their philosophy, and the rationale is that it leads to overall better performance, stability and an overall better experience.

Of course that's all debatable. I don't agree with all their choices either, I think they could be more flexible and still be true to their mission. But, that's just my opinion.

Let me guess, you're referring to the US only again? The iPhone was released worldwide, therefore I am comparing the technology of the iPhone with the technology of other phones WORLDWIDE, NOT JUST THE US.

Well since the US is typically responsible for 40% of all mobile phone sales then you are wrong.

I'll agree with that too. I love my iPhone (3GS) and I'm excited about the new OS but sometimes little things really will make people happier than huge new features. I don't really understand why Apple will put so much effort into some things like "Game Center" or whatever its called but will refuse to include a new lock screen, new notification style, txt msg/email sounds, etc. Maybe some of this stuff is included in the new OS and will come out in the months ahead.

You didnt debunk anything. People buy phones for different reasons. I don't know anyone who buys a phone based on the amount of MP's it's camera has.

But there is never going to be just one phone that has it all.

It's the fact that apple doesen't do anything and not in a timely manner. I'll tell you one thing, if the design remains the same, or has minimal change. Apple needs to rethink it's "thinking"

The main features I love on my JB 3G that I will not give up for 4.0

- Lockscreen notifications/alerts
- Password Protect individual apps
- Ability to customize entire UI, not just the background.. lol
- Ability to load camera from any screen in 1 second (sooo convenient)
- and my favorite, 3G Unrestrictor

Besides the 3G Unrestrictor, I dont think the other items are too much to ask for.. If/when the dev team can jailbreak this latest version. Then I will consider upgrading. Until then, I'm enjoying my JB3G while reading reviews of other phones on the market.

The problem is with OS 4.0 is that there is almost nothing, except email & servicing corporate, that a BB does better than an iPhone.

I love Apple products but I'm not blinded by what they do like some of the people on this forum are.

The iPhone OS while fundamentally solid is stale and in need of major UI changes. The lock screen is not intuitive, the push notifications are obtrusive and Apple needed to do something with this. Of course that will probably be saved for 5.0. I mean they need something to feed their fanboys next year. Multitasking should have happened with the 3GS but instead we got a compass and video recording. The fanboys rejoiced ha!

Factor in no OS 4.0 for the ipad until fall and I am at a loss?!? Wasnt the point of making the ipad using the iPhone OS to simplify things? This is really a big concern to me.

The Sprint 4G phone is looking better and better. Plus I love the idea of a phone as a mobile hot spot.

All I want is an iPhone that evolves. I DON'T want a lot of MP. But I do want a phone that is worth its price - And the iPhone is so outdated both hardware- and software wise that the price is getting ridiculous. I agree that some people don't want upgrades, but this guy talked about the "average user" and let's face it: The average user thinks a lot about what's new and hot. Also, I feel bad for you since you were forced into buying an "overpriced" iPad. Sucks to not have the choice over what you purchase.
