A phone is a mobile device, I prefer to view my photos on a 30" calibrated S-IPS display. The PenTile Matrix technology used in the Galaxy S SAMOLED is very nice. The color temperature is high on it closer to 7500K, but serves it purpose quite well and pixelization is hard to tell. Utilizing the full resolution of the iPhone4 is somewhat difficult if you don't zoom in on a display. This is a personal choice. For a mobile device, I'll take something that has a bigger display, draws less current, but thinner and lighter weight.

That 30" calibrated S-IPS display is waisted on you if you think;

I have a Nexus One w/ Froyo and I've been using the Android Community
forums. Fortunately everyone is pretty helpful, especially considering
Android requires a lot of tinkering and research (the Windows analogy is
VERY apt). The Android Fanboys love the prospect of "converting" an iPhone
user :p
I think that tinkering is what gives android its power and flexibility. You really don't need to tinker with it, but if you want to customize the phone to better suit your needs then there's a plethora of apps, tools, and ways to tweak the phone just the way you want it.

I have a droid x, and I'm keeping it fairly vanilla, I have Launcher Pro to replace the stock launcher, and made some minor modifications in the settings due to my needs. I've found the android forums (like this place) to be very helpful.

One of the big weak points of Android right now is using it as a media
player. I read somewhere that this was something being addressed in the
Gingerbread release. Double-twist is supposed to be good at getting media
onto the phone, but I haven't found a media player app that I like yet.
Agreed, I hate using doubletwist it never seems to work well. I've found salling media sync that does a better faster job then doubletwist.

The biggest problem I see with the carrier-locked Android phones is that you
are at the mercy of the handset manufacturer AND the carrier for OS
updates, not to mention all the crapware that they seem to insist upon
installing on top of Android. It all seems to run counter-intuitive on a phone
whose most compelling features is supposed to be its "openness", I mean
just look at the lengths that Moto is going to to lock down the Droid X and
AT&T is going out of there way to (reportedly) restrict you from side-loading
apps, it is all rather bizarre. I'm just glad I got a Nexus One when I did, so
I don't have to deal with any of those issues.
Agreed, and that's been my concern as well. I was on a Nexus which circumvents this to a great deal as you rely on google to provide you with the updates, and being that the nexus was google's baby, we got the updates first.

There are advantages to moving away from the nexus, While I gave up on custom roms because of the DX's encrypted bootloader, I'm now on the verizon network and have a superior device. Well worth the delay in getting updates and not running custom roms. In some sense, the need for a customized rom has diminished with the modern phones since they do just about everything the custom roms did a while ago, that is, the custom roms plug a hole, that hole has diminished quite a bit. This still flies in the face of those who like to tinker, but moto isn't the only manufacturer to start locking their phones down. HTC has made it very hard to unlock their newer phones and sprint has tried to slam the door on people rooting the EVO via an OTA update.

Learn the correct spelling. That is "wasted" not "waisted". For a mobile phone device the SAMOLED is indeed nice on the Vibrant. I don't know what the f**k AT&T did to the Captivate. If you're evaluating photos for clients, then an iPad is more appropriate, which is what many photographers (including myself) are using.

Yeah, just good luck getting your photos onto it with no card reader or USB port on it.

LOL.

One of these will do it (camera kit for the iPad)

and the iPad actually syncs with your computer, so its quite easy to get photos onto it

I know about the camera kit. My implication is that it is inconvenient.

To each their own, though.

I looked at the Vibrant before buying a Captivate. They're the same. Check out any Android forum and you'll see multiple page complaint threads about PenTile screens. The Galaxy S screen is being marketed as being better than the iPhone 4 for viewing pictures, movies, and just about everything. But it just isn't so. Some may like it, or be able to tolerate it, or be used to using some cheaper feature phone and not be aware of the differences, but it just isn't as good as the iPhone 4, EVO, or DroidX.

I agree about the iPad. I use my iPad as a photo album. But I do enjoy having all of my pictures on my iPhone as well.

Yes, but you implied that you could not get pictures into an iPad and that's incorrect

inconvenience ≠ inability.

Besides, syncing the iPad to the computer is by far much easier, convenient and fairly quick.

You're correct about the AMOLED, but with the SAMOLED, my experience has been different. I have used the iPhone4 and it is sharper for text, but the SAMOLED is very usable and preferable over the current generation iPod Touch (that I also own) display, Nexus One, Incredible and Droid. My biggest complaint about the Galaxy S (Vibrant) display is the inaccurate color temperature that I hope is possible to correct.

The problem isn't just with reading text. Anything I would do felt like I was looking through a mesh screen to do it. Even on the white background of a web page, I could see pixels in it. I could also see the pixel structure in pictures. Also, the colors suck. They are way over saturated. The colors on the iPhone 4, as well as the HTC EVO and Droid X, look natural and match what I see on my iMac. I tested this by pulling up my Flickr photos on the devices.

Dude I couldn't agree with you more. There is nothing smooth about this screen, even videos look grainy. White are completely grey or light blue which just makes the phone seem cheap. I will return mine and keep my iPhone 4!

Agreed, this iPhone vs. world stuff is getting pretty old. There is no iPhone killer and each phone has its strengths and weaknesses.

You get a phone that fits your needs.

With that said sounds like the OP went in with some preconceived prejudices and based the phone's strengths on a scant 10 minutes. Clearly too short to fully measure the phone's strengths/weaknesses.

Excellent post, very well said.

I have a new iPhone 4 & Samsung Captivate each on their own dedicated AT&T line.

I find both excellent smartphones. Normally I would write a brief review of these two for those who are interested. Unfortunately there are too many "experts" in the audience, who will attack & spew venom on anything other than an Apple product. So, specifics aside one cannot go wrong with either of these.

I have to be honest, as vibrant as the screen is I don't understand how you guys are putting up with the pixelation on that screen, it's not even pixelation, more like a grainy appearance..

I noticed some bad image distortion on web pages when scrolling, the image would look broken, or sort of jaggy. Almost like artifacts on the image and text as you scroll.

Small text looks awful so you pretty much have to zoom thus in some ways negating the size of the screen. (a 4 inch retina would truly take advantage of the real estate because you would be able to read all the text without zooming), pics look like they have pin holes in them. Just very disappointed in the screen and kind of curious how some comparisons have called it a draw with the retina display. Yes it is bigger and has better blacks and colors, but the clarity is a big step down from iPhone 4.

Also the GPS appears to be less than stellar. I can deal with the OS not being as polished, but after using iphone 4 I really couldn't see myself being content with the screen on the captivate, just too grainy, and the white levels are way off.

I dont know what to think of this response.

I have the Vibrant which is the same phone and i dont have any of those issues you speak of on the screen. It doesnt look grainy and i have no issues with small text. But to say you "wouldnt put up with it"? Really? How long have you had an iPhone? Is the iP4 your first? Judging by your member date, id say no.
Because the iPhones before the iP4 sure didnt have near as nice a picture as the Galaxy's do and you put up with those. The display on my Vibrant just blows away the picture on my iPhone...which is not a iP4. Loved my iPhone but it looks real small compared to my Vibrant and im not one that loves the bigger phones. I think the Droid X, HTC HD2, and the Dell phone are too big as a whole. I wouldnt want to go bigger than a 4" screen.

Tell ya what, the iPhone has a nice OS but so does the Android and it is rapidly making progress and in some ways is better because it is open source and very customizable and ive only been using it a week(compared to the OP's 10 minutes) and i see a big difference and im not even running 2.2 yet. I have come....in a week to really like the Android system and there are many Apps and more to come...as with what the iPhone had at their stage where Android is at with their app store.

I dont know. Maybe i just dont go over every detail as some guys do. It is a phone with many features. But it is a phone. I use it. I dont worry about smudges, tape residue(which comes off easily), washing my hands before i even touch it, not taking it out of the box before i put a screen protector on it as ive seen many posters say on all those. I wipe it off if i need to.
I am using it now naked. The screen is scratch resistant(unless you take a nail to it) and i hate Gel cases which is the only option right now. I will get those later when i can, but it dont stop me from using it.

Froyo will be coming out soon anyway, so the people experiencing lag shouldn't much longer.

that also depends on when Samsung gets it hands on it, modifies a TouchWiz skin on it, releases it to AT&T for testing, and finally releases it. Samsung has a pretty bad track record for expedient firmware upgrades on Android.

Unless someone comes out with a custom stock Android ROM, which is a good alternative.

iPhone fan-boys are starting to get worried now that a high end android phone has come to their AT&T network.

If you love your iPhone and hate android.... then no problem! Stick with the iPhone. Android doesn't need you. That way everybody is happy happy!

More choice = better for everyone

I've had my Captivate since launch, and I'm really starting to love it. The touch screen is just as responsive as the iPhone, so I have no CLUE, where you're getting this from. Reskined the admittingly crappy Touchwiz with ADW launcher and have had zero problems, bar GPS and MMS, which are both getting fixes from independent devs. It's a great phone.

Captivate didn't Captivate me!!

I've had the Captivate since the 16th (got it 2 days earlier:D) and the NUMBER 1 problem was trying to sync it with Mac. It was a total nightmare. Couldnt find usb drivers for mac on it anywhere, and Samsung support is useless. It would only sync on old faithful (vista desktop) if I used the rear usb ports, Weird??
The Gps is no where near being close, and the lock button location is terrible, other than that, it was a good phone. Wouldnt get it over the Iphone though...If you go Android, Go with HTC...They have the best user experience by far!!

I played with one in the at&t store yesterday it seemed alright, though I wasn't blown away or anything. The screen was pretty colorful but looked quite pixelated compared to my iPhone 4 and my droid, amoled/samoled is definitely overrated. I also noticed that I felt pretty cheap. It seemed pretty snappy for a 2.1 phone though occasional UI lag always sneaks up in android it seems. Overall decent phone but it just doesn't compare to the iPhone 4. I've got 7 months of android experience now and though its a good OS that's really easy to use but quite tweakable as well and there are somethings it does better than ios (notifications, more customizeable homescreens), overall it is an inferior experience imo. It all comes down to the UI and the apps, and android loses there big time. Oh and I just wanted to say that I think live wallpapers are a completely useless battery drainer and performance sucker.

You're a noob user. Enable USB debugging and you'll be able to mount your Captivate to a Mac computer just fine.

I've also had my Captivate since launch. Just like you I've also had a great experience with it. Those here that feel a need to be critical of the display are biased & exaggerating. Side by side with my iPhone 4, the Samsung display is stellar. Yes, the iP4 display is better, but it should be due to it's higher ppi rating, not because the Captivate display is fuzzy or jagged, it's not. Let's remember that Android & iOS are two vastly different operating systems. Those who compare them literally are those that cheat themselves out of an opportunity to learn and grow. I'm _not_ declaring either of them as superior to the other, just highlighting the fact that if you expect Android to be like iOS, you're missing an opportunity.

At the end of the day, iOS is fast & easy to learn & use, but easier does not always mean better for you.

This is precisely why I'm a multi-platformist. I like the differences from one OS to the next. I like variety, and I prefer to be knowledgeable in several technical disciplines.

I went to AT&T store today and tried out new samsung Captivate. Some reviewers described it as good iphone 4 alternative.

Well, after playing about 10-15 minuets, I was very disappointed with the phone. The touch screen was not as responsive as apple and the phone was harder to use than iphone 4. Maybe, I am used to iOS 4, but Android OS wasn't as great as I hoped to be. Samsung also put their custom designed touch Wiz 3.0 on it and yea... it sucks. The phone was lagging with video wallpaper.

I mean these website reviewers are AWFUL! Why would they even call captivate as iphone 4 replacement? It's no where near iphone 4'. Besides antenna issue on my iphone 4, (Solved by bumper) I like my iphone 4.

Captivate is a bad ass phone.. I would take it over any Iphone any day of the week. Not that great? it's as powerful as an Iphone 4 and you can do flash.. And the biggest thing of all.. Samsung unlike Apple still make quality products and Sammy don't B/S the customer like that fruit. The Samsung will be more reliable, and overall better phone. It is made right and made to work well. Samsung have the technology to stay up with Apple, and the Samsung is a superior product over Iphone 4 in qualuty and performance and a little less **** to smell owning and Apple and dealing with Apple. Apple have the Retina screen.. I will give that, hands down the best display out... but lets compare Iphone 4 and Captivate pound for pound... It's another story
