Yesss, but it's a phone, isn't it? The other is an iPod. Different product families, see?

When will you people get over branding? That's like saying a Macbook and a Macbook Pro are completely different things, when really one is just better* than the other. The iPhone and the iPod touch both have the same features, the iPhone just has more features. They both run the same OS, the iPhone is just able to take advantage of more software. They're the exact same thing, except the iPhone is really the iPod touch Pro.

*relatively speaking.

The line would be greatly more arbitrary if, and only if, the iPhone was not a subscription device. As it is, the comparison is not valid, since the two devices aren't part of a vertical line up, they're merely part of the same family. In your analogy of the MacBook and MacBook Pro, try switching in the iMac for one of those devices. Sure they essentially have all the same features, run the same software etc, but one is a laptop and the over isn't. Considering one to be an upgrade over the other clearly misses a fundamental difference that isn't just branding.

what?

disregarding all other differences, the iphone is a phone, it has a constant cellular data connection, and you can call your friends without worrying about wifi or skype or anything of that nature, I am going to say that that is the biggest difference, just a thought.

And now for something completely different...

I have been reading, and thinking about it and I have to agree with the nays in relation to the camera. As much as I would love to have a touch with a camera, and for me (though I realize that I'm not in the majority) that will probably be the deciding factor between the two. I sorta doubt that they will do that. the big reasons I'm thinking are as follows:

size: the ipod touch is slimmer than the iphone, and I doubt the camera would allow it to stay that way

competition: hardly any mp3 players nor gaming devices have cameras, I doubt apple will feel a need to go in that direction

price: it will add to the cost, lowering apple's money margin

differentiation: it is the most obvious (other than the phone part) dividing factor between the iphone and touch

however, with all of that said, I think that I still might wait until september, just in case, after all I could easily be wrong.

Any rumors of the anti-grease coating? That, 802.11n and a camera would be perfect. Oh, and the new cortex8 or whatever inside and a new GPU. I would personaly get it for the screen alone, or 802.11n, or improved innards. A camera is high on my list, due to the use in apps. Any of these likely? I want to upgrade from my 1G, but not until there's somthing big.

UH.. the dsi has a camera, psp has a camera attachment, archos and cowon you can attach an external bullet cam to record

Almost definately oleophobic screen, as the iPhone has it and it's just a little feature.
802.11 draft N - maybe, Apple could surprise us? But maybe not..
Camera - Nope (it's one of the main differenciators from the iPhone and it's already been discussed above)
The new GPU and CPU definately.

As far as the 4th Gen iPod touch

I read some rumours on a multi core A9 Cortex processor.. very probable me thinks

Apple will likely deliver iPhone models packing at least two cores inside the main processor by 2010, according to a CNet report.

In a phone interview, James Bruce, wireless segment manager for ARM confirmed that, "You'll definitely see handsets shipping with a dual-core A9 in 2010,"

They all have crappy cameras, and games which depend on INWARD POINTING CAMERAS (except archos and cowon but they have an insignificant part of the market share). If iPhone doesn't have the second camera, no way is iPod touch getting a primary or secondary camera, at least 'till games featuring this come out (which will never happen as devs would be cutting themselves out of the iPod marked until :apple: got around to including a camera in it).

In Apple's logic iPod touch is a slimmed down iPhone, released after the iPhone to bring it's mobile OS to bigger crowds who can't afford/don't want to change to an iPhone. As such they now have 40 million OS users, 3/4 (i think (?)) of which are iPod touch users.

Therefore, they want people to UPGRADE from the iPod touch to the iPhone, by offering features that people might want - GPS, Camera, and obviously, cellular connection.

Your analogy: iPhone-iPod touch as Macbook-iMac
I don't agree - iPhone and iPod are both portable devices, therefore the laptop analogy is much more appropriate.

I am really hoping that the ipod touch wouldn't change its exterior design and I am entirely not keen on camera. What's the point of a camera when it is msot likely to be a crappy one. Plus, we already have a camera on our phone (most people anyway), so why would we want another camera? The only extra feature that I really hope that would add in would be GPS. That would be uber great =D

I will almost certainly get the iPod Touch 3G if your right. 802.11n would be hitting the sweet spot, but not escential. Anyone know how good oleophobic coatings are? I have high expectations. Maybe next year I'll get an iPhone with multi-core :D

remember kiddies, its an iPOD.

and i seee these forums filling up with "apple will give the iPt this or why apple MUST give the iPt this'

always wrong, you wont see a gps or 3G, its an iPod, an awesome iPod, but an iPod all the same.

Does anyone actully know when it is coming out, as i really want one, but if there is a new one with the features described here (only some) then i would rather wait and have a better one than my friends :p

In September

They're not going to opt for the OLED screen until early 2010 for another project, and then later in 2010 roll it out across there portable range.

As for GPS; it's not happening for the iPod touch and neither is the camera i'm afraid. However based on feedback and use of the improved iphone camera, apple are working on a alternative.

Currently dubbed iCam, it's designed to wirelessly sync photos to your mac/pc and/or your ipod touch/iphone - it's likely to come in 3 memory sets with appropriate resolutions for each price range. It'll include basic optical zoom and simple settings for day, night, indoor and outdoor. Aimed at the general market, not professional.
It'll look similar to the current iPod Classics, slightly thicker, with the screen acting as it should in any camara. The wheel will also be the same but orientated differently. Matt finish, very early development at the moment - released around fall 2010.

Third generation iPod touch will include build in Barometer, Compass, Altometer and Stepometer as part of the B.A.C.S.™ system, this is/was supposed to be a surprise - oh well! It's there to set it apart from the iphone as an all round, outdoors device and just a cool gadget - Plus digital basic radio.

-Just imagine the Apps!

No mic, but they'll encourage the use and support of bluetooth headsets -

-Hello skype calls!

Plus the obvious, it's going match CPU, wireless and other internal specifications with the iphone 3G S. No 64gb memory upgrade though :(

And that's about it on the hardware, the software info on bluetooth and P2P has already been leaked.

Anything i miss out?

im sure its BS

I'm sure this is just another rumor someone thought was clever to tell everyone he/she/ heshe was sure about the hardware upgrades and such.

The camera, yes its unlikely.
But the mic is a very likely upgrade along with the double as fast wireless the new iphone 3GS has.

All the other upgrades that people are saying are pretty stupid, mic, faster wifi, OLED, and anti smudge screen are the most likely ones.

I don't understand why you think a camera is unlikely. Makes pefect sense to me. There was a recent rumor about the iPod line getting camera's and I could see them implementing them into the line, especially the touch.

I see it more likely than a mic, which wouldn't be used by the majority, and I think its going to be a year or so before we even start to hear about OLED.

I think we will see an OLED screen, MIC, and a camera. THe new Zune will have an OLED screen so why not the iPod?

^ Because we would have seen OLED in the 3GS if was going to be put into the touch. And its too early of a technology. I would expect the next gen to be pretty much the same, maybe a camera, increased size capacity, but faster.

It will have the 3g cam, faster processor and better graphics then the 3GS

It will not have OLED, that's new technology that needs to be researched more and the GPS will come as an attachment not built-in so please stop with that enough already:rolleyes:

Presumably you were trotting out the same line prior to the 1.1 update that gave the iPod the app suite from the phone...

IPod Touch And 3G

FAKE!
an mp3 player would not ever have 3G, thats a cellular network frequency and why would an mp3 player make phone calls??!?
i can see a GPS in it but no way theres 3G unless its the new iPhone, definetly fake,
and besides that pictures is not the way apple would make theres and, besides now is not the time they would even begin starting to make advertisements like those

:apple::apple::apple:If an ipod touch had 3g it wouldn't be to make phone calls it would be for the internet besides we mean third generation :apple::apple::apple:

OLED isn't a mature technology - Apple won't jumpt on it 'till they are ready (besides, apple products are built to last, and OLED screen start dimming after a few years. ) Think of BLU-RAY in Macs..

An alternative? How do you know?

So instead of having one sleek device in your pocket, you have to lug around 2? Not very Appl'esch

An altometer? What's that? Oh an altimeter? Now how is a pressure altimeter going to fit into an iPhone? A radar altimeter is out of the question, and the only common solution left is 4 way GPS triangulation (4 satellites instead of 3), which is very imprecise.
Stepometer? New word for me - And so trash the Nike+ system build in with great fanfare to the 2nd gen touch and the new iPhone? Yeh right?

-Just imagine the Apps!

No mic, but they'll encourage the use and support of bluetooth headsets -

-Hello skype calls!

Maybe

And that's about it on the hardware, the software info on bluetooth and P2P has already been leaked.

I see it very probable that Apple unveils a 64gb memory upgrade.
