expectations

Just from what happened on monday, and the minimalist changes to the iphone, I am guessing that the changes to the ipod touch will be as follows:
64gig capacity
faster processor
more RAM
mic
Compass
Better battery life

in addition I really am hoping for:
a camera (w/ video)
wireless N capability
plays HD video
OLED screen (yeah right but lets hope)
larger screen

There will not be a design change since there are so many products out there that fit the design as it is now.

There will be a speed bump due to the graphics processor and cpu speed from the iPhone. By the way, the iPhone 3G had a 412 Mhz processor and the iPod touch 2G had a 513 Mhz processor, so the 2G Touch already was faster for games, etc.

I see the magnetometer, a microphone, possibly a camera but I doubt it, same sized screen, and a speed bump with the graphics chip and 600 Mhz cpu from the iPhone.

No other changes. Same looks. Faster. Better software.

Next year, the iPhone and touch will change but this year, the looks are the same and the insides plus OS 3.0 are the big changes.

And, actually, with a speed bump and the new OS, it really is quite a good upgrade for the iPhone and would be for the touch later this year as well.

Then, in the spring of 2010, out comes the "iPad", then a revamped iPhone in the summer, and then a revamped touch in the fall.

2010 will be the year for the hardware for Apple, I'll bet.

I was planing to get a ipod touch 2g this summer vacations but I was wondering if I should wait for the third generation. When is the third generation going to come out?

The backplate on the iPod touch needs to lose the clips that make it very hard to remove, and they need to add on some torx screws, like mabey 10 around the perimeter of the backplate. Then the battery could be easily accessed.

I doubt they'll ever allow easily replaceable batteries. Too many people just buy a new one when their battery stops holding a charge.

I really really want GPS and TomTom to release one of those windshield holders for the iPod Touch so i could use the TomTom App but I don't think it's going to happen. I think all we're going to see is a faster iPod Touch, a 64GB version and possible the compass thing that the iPhone got.

People have been wanting lots of things, camera, mic, memory, gps, bigger, brighter, better, faster.... they get you more of the same (not to diminish what's there now at all). Let's skip the camera because you probably have one on your phone (just go with it). Let's skip GPS for now.A mic can be useful and will probably be there eventually since Apple is doing stuff with voice.

Now... what next? What new and really useful things do you DO with it?

It's a rich platform but what hardware could Apple add that would make it able to do something useful that it can't do now? Everything else is just perpetual "more of what you already have" upgrades. I don't have a good answer. Given what they did with the iPhone GS, I'm not sure Apple does either.

My predictions:

- 16/32/64 GB at $229/$299/$399
- Same design as current touch
- Improved battery life
- Improved speakers
- Faster processor and increased RAM, equal to iPhone 3G S
- Built-in Mic for use with the Voice Memos application and Voice Controls

Considering the small increases Apple made to the iPhone, I don't think they will make many changes to the touch. Besides, there is only so much they can add before it becomes an iPhone.

My Doubts:
- Magnetometer; They probably won't include this just to differentiate from the iPhone.
- GPS; I would like to see this, but it probably wouldn't fit because the touch is so slim.
- Camera; Wouldn't fit, and makes the touch too close to the iPhone (though this is at the top of my wishlist)
- OLED screen; I don't get why anyone is actually expecting this. Yes, the Zune HD has one, but Apple doesn't really jump on new, expensive technology right away. (See Blu-Ray in Macs)

The problem is, the last Touch update wasn't very big either. Apple's got to do something bigger this time to maintain growth. IMO, GPS would fulfill that. GPS and a faster processor are the 2 things I want.

I don't see GPS being including since most apps that would use it would require a data connection.

They might include a camera though...

You're right about that, but some of them show a map only when they have a connection and the geotagging app I'm using with my iPhone 3G (GeoLogTag) never uses a data connection at all.

However, I also think a camera is the most obvious (including video?).

The new iPod Touch will not be that different? You guys are forgetting how much of a total suckfest last years iPod event was. Everything about the nano was already leaked, nothing really significant happened to the iPod Touch to warrant up grade slimmer, speaker, controls, bluetooth, mic support. *yawn*

The 3rd gen will be different I think.

GPS- GPS doesn't require a cellular carrier it could use the gps satellite so it's not an impossibility. I believe Archos has GPS.

Camera- I think the touch will get the crappy camera the 3G has. Not many people will be gravitating towards the 3G even though it's cheaper so they will have tons left over. They will have to put them some where.

EDIT:
Oh the Archos requires a cradle for GPS same with other PMPs. So maybe TomTom can make a GPS that connects to the dock connector or something.

Cowon A3 has the DVR feature I was referring to. No dock just plug it to your TV. I think you can hook a bullet cam up too and record....

Prediction:
16/32/64gb options
3GS CPU/GPU
2mp, fixed focus camera (same as old iPhone)
GPS, no compass (tagging photos, using predownloaded map data, etc)
no mic (will ship with remote/mic headphones, and will offer a cable with remote, mic and 3.5mm jack for use with your own headset)
better battery life

Off the wall/maybe stuff:
cell chip for app store, MobileMe integration (email, remote security, etc), and
SMS based push notifications - think Kindle type wireless integration
HD video output to TV
OLED screen

Definately Sept. 9th

If there was no doubt, check this out: Apple is giving away free ipod touches with all it's macbooks until september 8th. Not only that, it won't be updated anytime soon with customers having to pay for OS 3.0 when it comes out, meaning there will be no new hardware release with the OS till at least past June 19th. Not such a revelation, I know, but just for those with a tinsy bit of doubt left ^_^

Apple Special Event 8th September 2009

Updated iPod Touch
Includes:
2MP Possibly 3MP (same unit as iPhone) Camera
Same CPU and GFX as iPhone 3GS
Mic although I think they might just include the headphones with inbuilt Mic
Plastic back (this is dependent on the next 2 items)
GPS - possibly
Compass - possibly

Adding the compass and GPS would mean the same type of plastic back as the iPhone for the Antenna. This would also open up a greater market for companies like Tom Tom with their sat nav.

OR

No GPS, but you can buy the Tom Tom cradle for iPod Touch which will include a GPS receiver.

they do that offer every year. it's a way to get rid of a lot of iPods to make room for the newer models.

Last yr the event was on september 9th but that was a tuesday. This year the 8th is on a tuesday. So maybe it will be on the 8th.

The event doesn't necessarily have to come right after the promotion ends. It will probably be within a week or 2 though.

Apple runs in a cycle, it should be early september like the last 2 years. Probably September 8th

they better lower the price and do 16GB for $199. It doesn't make sense for the iphone to be more expensive than the touch.
