I realise this has been discussed before, but just running through it again for this thread's news:

Apple was supposedly wanting the Core 2 Duo generation of chips for the start of this year, but had to settle for Yonah due to public pressure for an Intel release at Macworld Expo.

Apple's stock prices have increased by an ORDER OF MAGNITUDE within a few years.

There has recently been talk of Apple beating Dell in marketshare (or something like that, unless my memory's shot)

Dell has recently defected to AMD chips.

JUST BEFORE a major Apple event, WWDC, with so many people wondering what will be relased at Steve Jobs' Keynote, Intel moves the release and shipping dates of the final Core 2 Duo stream from a few weeks after WWDC to a few weeks BEFORE WWDC.

What does this tell me? I believe it shows that Apple is seen by Intel as a major business partner. Sure, Apple has only a small marketshare of computer sales, but it holds that entire segment. Sure, Apple only holds a few percent marketshare, but the rest is split up in timy pieces, and sprinkled like confetti to many, many small manufacturers of Windows boxes. In that way, Apple is unique, and I am sure Intel sees that too.

It is my belief that these observations show that there is a good chance Apple holds enough power and respect in Intel for them to have some control over the release date of their processors.

The recent rumor that iPods will soon use nVidia chips may also be consistent with this, and may hint at the extensive use of GForce chips in coming Macs. As AMD are planning to buy ATI, Apple could do better than risk angering their CPU provider by giving ATI more business. They would surely be better off purchasing nVidia hardware to promote their ties with Intel.

As a final question, The guides seem to not mension this, but I get the impression that the introduction of the Santa Rosa chipset will have no impact on Conroe or Woodcrest CPUs. In the time when Conroe and Woodcrest move to the quad core Kentsfield and Clovertown, Merom gets upgraded to supporting a faster Frontside Bus? Thanks.

Sorry if someone posted this link, but this was the first reference to it that I found.

So, it seems that it has been proven: Kentsfield and Clovertown use the same platform as (I guess that means Chipset and socket) and therefore are drop in replacements of Conroe and Woodcrest respectively. So, if Apple don't do anything dodgy with new iMacs, Mac Pros and any possible mid-towers, we could upgrade Core 2 Duo generation hardware to Quad Core?

I apologise if we already knew this, or if I have made some n00bish mistake in my statements or reasoning. Please don't hesitate to correct me, and feel free to refrain from calling me a noob. Only I'm allowed to do that!

EDIT: Hmmm... I really should be asking these questions in the Clovertown/Kentsfield thread. Double Drat!

So Apple's big Tuesday announcement is the bluetooth mighty mouse... :( BOOOOORRRRRRIIINNNNNNNNGG

We need some juicy, new Macbook Pro rumors! My wallet is twitching in anticipation to let loose the moths of war--er, to buy a new Core 2 Duo (C2D) MBP 17"! Any other manufacturers announce new C2D laptops?

Apple is way behind Dell in just about all markets share numbers. Apple has a trend of market share slightly increasing over the last year or so... and in the most recent quarter Apple's unit volumes grew faster then Dells... that is Apple gained market share relative to Dell (and few others).

They have started to ship systems with AMD chips... they haven't stopped selling Intel based systems.

an order of magnitude is 10X, this has not happened. If you go back maybe THREE years, you might get to 12 or something, but it would take a decade to get back to 7 or 8.

hmm, i doubt apple will stray too far from the design in place. theyve already made it thinner  what else do you want? *except those stated*

I cant see them playing with it all too much. But, never know...

I know it won't be anything as dramatic as the Pismo to Titanium changeover, but it could be something as subtle as the new Macbook redesign--something to distinguish it from the g4 'books. I just think that the new 'books are worthy of a makeover even it's something slightly cosmetic. Nothing too drastic, mind you. Just a tweak that says, "I'm better than the G4 as you can see by my sleek new design." :D

Redesign MacBook Pro So "Pros" Can Easily Change The HD Like "Consumers" Can

Well if they have the sense to redesign so that we can easily change the HD like they did with the MacBook, that will be plenty dramatic. I am willing to NOT pull the trigger until they do that.

I'm looking for:

1. Merom @ 2.33 GHz
2. User Upgradable HD like in the MacBook
3. 4GB RAM possible
4. Santa Rosa chipset (not due 'til Spring '07)
5. 17" like you have
6. Black Anodized Aluminum
7. 802.11n
8. 10-Gigabit Ethernet
10. Leopard Onboard
11. Refurbished

I will especially NOT pull the trigger until they redesign to make upgrading the HD as easy as it is to do on the lowly MacBook.

You are in for a long wait anyway Multimedia, Santa Rosa is due to launch in April.. it is still spring, but think closer to summer.

For that kind of wait I rather just get the next rev, dump it on ebay then, and buy a Santa Rosa one closer to Q2 '07.
You may be right. But I am really into that easily changable HD feature they put into MacBooks. So if it isn't in the new MBP, I will settle for a 2GHz Merom + 965 MacBook until they get the MBP design right. You can't add a "Pro" feature to a "Consumer" model and expect the "Pros" to roll over and live with an inferior design that makes it almost IMPOSSIBLE to swap out HDs while the "Consumers" can swap out drives any time they like in 5 minutes. Makes no sense whatsoever. I can think of numerous scenarios where Professionals NEED that rapid HD swapable capability EVERY DAY. I am LIVID this is not in the MacBook Pro already. :(

Speed Bump???

Eidorian said:
The MacBook Pro was speed bumped, twice.

The IntelMac Book Pro never came out with the slowest speed processor. This means no new model there. The 2.16 GHz model was an option. This just means that there was a price decrease. A price decrease on a current model may be new to the Mac arena, but unless you call a price decrease a new model, then my statement still stands.

The only thing good about the use of Intel chips in Macs is that if Apple continues to wait a year before coming out with a minor speed increase & call it a new model, they will be shown to be the problem & not the cpu maker. Only time will tell if there will be new Mac models in a more timely manner. So far 6 months & no new model.

When I sold computers several years ago, Windows units were updated every 3 months with Apple doing updates every 6 months. Apple has since gone closer to yearly updates. Will Intel's rapid changes now put enough pressure on Steve Jobs & Apple to change their ways. Only time will tell.

Silent CPU Upgrade for MB?

Multimedia said:
I agree with you about November. But not for MBP - for Merom in MacBooks. I think since Merom is already shipping early it's a safe bet we'll see Merom MacBook Pros running @ 2.33GHz in September. November would have to be the drop dead date for Merom MacBooks still running @ 2GHz since above that speed they are way too expensive to go into MacBooks.Exactly. The Tuesday September 12 Paris Apple Expo Keynote is the latest MBP will be announced as "shipping today".

I could also envision a silent upgrade to Merom at the same clock speed following the end of the back-to-school special Apple is running (MB +iPod Nano); perhaps sometime in September or October at the latest.

I think Apple will aim for all 64 bit hardware by the time Leopard is released.

[Edit: I really wonder if MBPs will be updated before Apple Expo Paris since they are also included in the back-to-school special. My hunch is no. MPs will be announced in August; MBPs will get a (slightly) new form factor in Sep with an announcement; and MBs will get a silent update at the same time. MBPs and MBs will ship after the back-to-school special ends on Sep 13.]

Silent Upgrades Unlikely - 64-bit Core 2 Duo Is A Big Marketing Deal

I agree with your timeline. But I don't think the MacBook upgrade will be very silent because they will at the very least want to put "Core 2 Duo" on the box. It's a very big marketing deal. Core 2 Duo means 64-bit - fresh date expires in late 2008 or early 2009. Core Duo means 32-bit - fresh date has EXPIRED already - STALE - END OF LIFE - AS GOOD AS DEAD. So I doubt silent upgrades will be happening for anything.

So are the Merom MBP's looking more at being released by WWDC or by Paris Expo? I'm well aware that it is all speculation but what does everyone else think? WWDC or ParisExpo?
