I realise this has been discussed before, but just running through it again for this thread's news:
Apple was supposedly wanting the Core 2 Duo generation of chips for the start of this year, but had to settle for Yonah due to public pressure for an Intel release at Macworld Expo.
Apple's stock prices have increased by an ORDER OF MAGNITUDE within a few years.
There has recently been talk of Apple beating Dell in marketshare (or something like that, unless my memory's shot)
Dell has recently defected to AMD chips.
JUST BEFORE a major Apple event, WWDC, with so many people wondering what will be relased at Steve Jobs' Keynote, Intel moves the release and shipping dates of the final Core 2 Duo stream from a few weeks after WWDC to a few weeks BEFORE WWDC.
What does this tell me? I believe it shows that Apple is seen by Intel as a major business partner. Sure, Apple has only a small marketshare of computer sales, but it holds that entire segment. Sure, Apple only holds a few percent marketshare, but the rest is split up in timy pieces, and sprinkled like confetti to many, many small manufacturers of Windows boxes. In that way, Apple is unique, and I am sure Intel sees that too.
It is my belief that these observations show that there is a good chance Apple holds enough power and respect in Intel for them to have some control over the release date of their processors.
The recent rumor that iPods will soon use nVidia chips may also be consistent with this, and may hint at the extensive use of GForce chips in coming Macs. As AMD are planning to buy ATI, Apple could do better than risk angering their CPU provider by giving ATI more business. They would surely be better off purchasing nVidia hardware to promote their ties with Intel.

As a final question, The guides seem to not mension this, but I get the impression that the introduction of the Santa Rosa chipset will have no impact on Conroe or Woodcrest CPUs. In the time when Conroe and Woodcrest move to the quad core Kentsfield and Clovertown, Merom gets upgraded to supporting a faster Frontside Bus? Thanks.
