But if consumers are speculated to possess a Merom laptop by the end of August, why would Apple wait 20-25 days later to simply announce it?

I kind of see them announcing something silently or announcing it during WWDC with a "Shipping in 2 weeks kind of thing".

Why not announce a product before it's possible to ship it?

1. People were furious when the Yonah-based laptops were announced in January and then were not shipped until weeks later. I doubt Apple cares to repeat that experience.

2. An early announcement will potentially cost Apple orders of Yonah-based laptops while people wait for Merom-based laptops to become available. Regarding the possibility of making them available for pre-order: see point 1.

I expect that, if no technical problems arise, Apple will announce Merom-based laptops (likely only MacBook Pros) at Apple Expo Paris. MacBooks with Merom will probably arrive somewhat later, so that Apple can have a somewhat differentiated product line, at least for a while.

This definitely increases the chances of Apple introducing new MBPs at WWDC. Could be a huge event!

My PB is only a year and half old, but Merom-based MBPs are looking awfully tempting...
They should release the damn desktops as in G5 or G6 or whatever the hell they're going to call it.

Furious for waiting 'weeks'? How long have you known Apple? I don't think Apple would have learnt from people having to wait for a product, as it's something that has happened long before the release of the MBP. I ordered my RevA 17" Powerbook following MacWorld Jan 03 and it took around three months to ship, let alone 'weeks' -- But in reality despite the wait being difficult, most people would prefer to know about the new product and wait for it, than to buy a soon to be superceded product and have it now. I for one would do it again.

Chuck.

I would MUCH rather apple annouce the new Merom MBPs with new design tommorow, and wait for it so ship in september, then for them to annouce in september and ship that day.

Announce Now Ship Whenever

I agree. But I think from a cynical marketing and keep selling point of view, the vast majority of Mac buyers are completely in the dark new models are coming and Apple wants to keep selling those people what they have already built and have in the pipeline and on shelves now.

Historically speaking, when apple updates the processors of a pre-existing model, are the prices increased, or will they remain the same?

So basically I'm asking, will MBP prices remain the same once they start shipping with Core 2 Duos?

Prices Stay The Same As Power Increases - Small Occasional Variations ± $100-$300

Prices stay "about the same" - occasionally down $100 here and there - as power increases each refresh. Less often UP a few hundred like when the Quad G5 came out the top went from $2999 to $3299. On the mobile front, I expect the prices to stay the same.

since everyone is expecting merom laptops at the end of august... sales for current MB and MBP is going to drop anyway because consumers are expecting new notebooks from apple.

So why not start announcing it at WWDC (regardless of the shipping time), so it can at least bring in pre-orders. Will ppl make more noise that apple is announcing a later shipping date, or keeping consumers in suspense while other companys start selling their merom notebooks?

definitely, good news at WWDC.

I recall someone here recently reiterating the point that Merom should not use less power than Yonah, but accomplish 20% more work. That was my understanding.

Now the claim is being made that a Core 2 Duo Notebook can get longer battery life than a "previous model" notebook, up to 5 hours.

Unless you do something that uses as much CPU power as it can get, your CPU usage will go down. For example, instead of using 50% of the CPU power, Merom would only use 40%, and that increases battery life.
