I know I'm not speaking for everyone, but who on earth actually uses iMessage anymore? I've used it a lot in the beginning, but these days everyone uses other messaging solutions such as WhatsApp or Telegram. I think this 'stickers' thing (including its own App Store) is a bit overreactive for something that - at least that's what I think - is not being widely used... :p

Seriously? It continues to be one of the best things about iOS in my opinion. In fact iMessages is a major part of the reason I came back after switching to Android. There are a few basic things a phone should be able to do without needing a replacement app and messaging is one of them.

I don't is or know anyone using anything but iMessage.

It's like Apple was an excellent house builder.
People who use to love their homes are waiting for great new homes to be built as they are so old now.
But all they are interested in, is messing with the patterns of wallpaper or curtain material, as they can sell a lot of that for minimal effort.

Where did it all do wrong Apple.
You are so sadly just now rules by the money men now and not interested in what so many past long term fans want, so much so, some are even abandoning you as they see you no longer have any interest in them.

It's a shame :(

Clearly there's a lot people around who use iMessage. xD

Well, then again: guess it's just the country. Most people in the Netherlands don't use it. Not saying that iMessage is bad by the way. In fact, I do love these changes. It's just that it's simply not for me, as almost no one in my area uses it.

Can only agree with you!
Here in the Netherlands (and countries around us in Europe) WhatsApp is a huge platform. And Telegram is getting bigger every month.

Apple has never really been about what fans want. As Steve said many times in his life, they are about giving you what you didn't know you wanted. I believe a few times he used the supposed Henry Ford quote "If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses."

Even with the things users do want Apple notoriously gives it to them down the line after they feel they have perfected whatever the thing is. Rarely will to give in to something and rush it just because their users want it. Perhaps they have something big lined up in the future.

Ummm, no. Just because you don't use, don't assume anyone else doesn't. Everyone I know with an Apple devices uses iMessage. BTW, do any of those other services encrypt your messages? There's a reason not to use them, because they don't, not even FB.

An Old Fart Writes:

iMessage is the only thing I miss leaving Apple for Samsung. Free picture message and video message function was one hell of a function when it first came out all those years ago when Apple WAS the innovator.

Rumours that they were going to make it cross over to Android 6 months ago were quashed once again which was a let down. So I half hoped when the iPhone 7 came out they just might do something different again to tempt me back.

They took away features (headphone jack) not added them. They did the usual smoke and mirrors stuff (look everybody, pretty new colour) and made the camera better and quicker (like all phone manufacturers have done since the concept of the mobile phone release). Now it's all about style for Apple, not substance any more. I accept that.

Youngsters who can't remember the earlier days won't understand. And that's a shame because they think stuff like IOS, iMessage, FaceTime, Siri et al - are all 'new'. Er. They're not. Colours. Stickers. And watch straps. They're new.

It's depressing. But it's true. The glory days are over, sonny. I remember when all this was just fields when you were just knee high to a grasshopper and ... Where was I?

Ah yes. iMessage. Damn good thing in its day. Damn good thing. You see back in the Noughties, you had to pay for video and picture messages and talking to people face to face live was the stuff of dreams and ... ("Get outta here, Grandad!"-MacRumors Ed.)

Yes, yes. I must be going. But if you need to know anything about how Apple used to be .... I ...goodbye ...oh dear ...it's all very sad you know :( Excuse me, Mr Cook, I'm an old Apple user, would you be good enough to show me the door?

Eventually there will be a convergence of all these message apps similar to how early 20th century telephone networks converged. All come down to whom foots the bill for the infrastructure support.

Lots and lots of people. That's why Apple is gonna cash in and up its services income yet again. Brilliant and significant move

finally!
pre-ordered a new iPhone with a value of about $1000 and I get acces to colorful (childish) Message App Store.

thank you Tim!

Do you really think the iMessage changes are geared toward your age group. Think again.

Steve Jobs died and it is now ruled by committees of middle managers asserting their half-talented selves way too much. Apple right now is not enough Lieutenants and way too many Generals. When Tim is gone next year after the new campus is complete, expect a healthy purge.

Wouldn't it have been sufficient to just host this stuff on the regular App Store? Isn't creating its own store a little overkill for some iMessage decorations and a few apps? Don't get me wrong, I think the features are neat, but its own store seems a little odd.
Get used to more fragmentation like this in the future.

Don't you get sick of being...well, what you know you are, all the time?

I desperately want Apple to make a computer that I want to buy.

I want Apple to have a line of medium to high end Mac's with nice i7 chips and 1080 Nvidia type graphics cards.

If they made them, people would swarm all over them, games developers would fall over themselves to right all the high end titles for them.

But they won't, I know. They want to make easy to market designer stuff for people who don't care.
The type of people who just go into a TV store and ask for a large screen TV, as long as it shows a picture than a TV is a TV, they are not interested in any technical aspects of it.

The people would bought the Apple 2 are unimportant to Apple now :(

How on earth do I put stickers on photos? If I put a photo in a message and then try to add a sticker, it just asks me if I want to replace the photo.

And why do the four dots for the Messages App Store look like graphics from a Commodore 64?

Do not generalize, there are other parts of the world. In Europe Viber and FB Messenger are way more popular than Whatsapp, and I don't even have a clue what the heck Telegram is.

Everyone I know with an iPhone or iPad uses it
at least with my circle of friends, i can't make group chats on apple messages, as many don't have an iphone.
then, since i don't want to deal with multiple apps for the same function, i settled on whatsapp for everything, it's the most democratic app (everyone has it).

imo all messaging apps are basically the same, unless you really look for the specific feature, but for basic conversation functionality they are just equally fine.

Hello iTom, I'm from the Netherlands too and I'm facing the same problem as you. It's nice to have when most people use iMessage, but when there are little people using or being able to use it (90+% is on Android here) there is little benefit.

I'd rather Apple focuses on other services like Maps or Siri to make this useful over here. Don't get me wrong, everything Apple is doing to make things better is useful. But their services lack so much over here, thats it hard to use them at all. I'm forced to use other services like Google Maps or Google Now and I'm happy that those services are available on iOS too. If these apps weren't available on iOS, iPhones here wouldn't even be an option.

I don't get what Apple is doing and why this progress is so slow. Same for AppleTV 4. Siri doesn't work on it over here. It's been how long on the market (almost a year)? So why sell a crippled device here when it doesn't support it's most beloved feature?

I can go on and on... It shouldn't have to be like this. And Apple is wondering why it's losing share? Apple centric countries like the USA and United Kingdom do benefit from the new features iMessage gives. But there are so much countries like The Netherlands where it's total useless.

I hope Apple looks beyond the borders and listens to its customers instead of dictating what it thinks is best for them.

Ha ha. That old chestnut. Cliche Number 42 in the Apple Fanboy Book Of Ignorance no less.

Now. Place hands over ears and repeatedly vocalise loudly "Not listening. Not listening. La la la!".

Ignorance is indeed blissful but rarely lasts forever, readers.

Viber? Maybe in some European countries, but in the Netherlands it's not popular at all. Telegram is just WhatsApp but without the privacy concerns and some additional features (like native desktop support). But since everyone here uses WhatsApp, Telegram is not so popular around here.

No, you're completely right. Apple really fails in terms of international support. Especially in countries like the Netherlands. It took them years to bring Siri to our country, and when it finally came it wasn't even as advanced as in English. They did improve it with iOS 10 though, but still... so much time for something like that. And Siri on Apple TV is indeed another example. Although tvOS 10 does bring Siri in Dutch. Maps seems okay to me, but that depends on where you live I think. Around Eindhoven it's more accurate/recent than Google Maps. Transit in Maps will take some time to get here though, another example of that. Then there's Apple Pay. How long is it gonna take until we will have this? Last one: the QuickType suggestions aren't working in Dutch either.

So disappointing. It's the cool stuff that doesn't work in the Netherlands, including many other countries. I rather see Apple waiting to release a feature until it can be available more widely from the start. Doesn't change anything about the fact that Apple is still a fantastic company, that I love iOS 10, and that I'm for sure gonna love the iPhone 7 as well. They just need to do better in terms of international roll-out of features.
